What is Biological
Science?
There are many branches of science
including, physical science, medical
science, social science, and biological
science. Biological science is the study of
living organisms. There are many fields of
biological science that study living
organisms like…
Biology
 Biology is the study of life and living organisms .
 Biology got it’s name from the Greek word βίος,, (βίος means
life) and λογία,.(λογία, means study of)
 There are different types of biology…
 Biochemistry examines the chemistry of life.
 Molecular biology studies the interactions among biological
molecules.
 Cellular biology examines cells.
 Physiology examines physical and chemical functions of
tissues, organs, and organ systems of an organism.
 Evolutionary biology examines the process that produced the
diversity of life.
 Ecology examines how organisms interact in the
environment.
 Someone who studies biology is called a biologist.
David Baltimore
David Baltimore is a
biologist. He was born on
March 7, 1938 in New York
City, New York. He won the
Nobel Prize in Philology
and is President of the
American Association for
the Advancement of
Science .
He is still alive today.
Botany
 Botany is the study of plants.
 Botany got it’s name from the Greek word
βοτάνη (βοτάνη means pasture, grass, or
fodder) and the word βόσκειν(βόσκειν means to
feed or graze).
 Botany covers scientific disciplines like structure,
growth, reproduction, metabolism, development,
diseases, chemical properties, and evolutionary
relationships among taxonomic groups.
 Someone who studies Botany is called a
Botanist.
Ibn Al-Baitar
Ibn Al-Baiter is a famous
scientist, botanist,
pharmacist, and
physician. He was born in
1197 A.D. He died in
1248.
Zoology
 Zoology is the study of the animal kingdom.
 Zoology got it’s name from the ancient Greek word
ζῷον (ζῷον means animal) and the word λόγος
(λόγος means knowledge.
 Zoology also studies the structure of animals,
embryology, evolution, classification, habits, and
distribution.
 There are many types of zoology including…
 Zoography- describes animals and their habitats.
 Comparative anatomy- studies the structure of
animals.
 Ethology- is the study of animal behavior.
 Someone who studies Zoology is called a Zoologist.
Terri Irwin
Terri Irwin is a famous
Zoologist. She was born
July 20, 1964 in Eugene,
Oregon. She has a
husband named Steve
Irwin and the run the
Australia Zoo in Beerwah
Queensland Australia.
She has been living in
Australia since 1992, when
she married Steve.
Bacteriology
 Bacteriology is the study of bacteria.
 Bacteria are tiny microorganisms lacking
organelles and an organized nucleus,
including some that can cause disease.
 This form of biology includes the
identification of bacteria, classification,
characterization of bacterial species
 Someone who studies bacteriology is
called a bacteriologist.
Robert Koch
Robert Koch was a famous
bacteriologist. He was born on
December 11, 1843 in
Clausthal, Kingdom of
Hanover. He is mostly known
for his role in identifying the
specific causative agents of
tuberculosis, cholera , and
anthrax and for giving
experimental support for the
concept of infectious disease.
He died may 17 1910.
Ornithology
 Is the study of birds
 Ornithology comes from the Greek word ὄρνις,
(ὄρνις means bird) and the word λόγος (λόγος
means explanation).
 The history of ornithology has helped scientist
develop several key concepts in bird evolution,
behavior, and ecology such as the definition of
species, the process of specification, instinct,
learning, ecological niches, guilds, island
biogeography phylogeography and conservation.
 Someone who studies ornithology is called an
ornithologist.
James Bond
No this is not the James
Bond in the movies.( As
you can see) He is a
famous ornithologist.
James Bond was born
January 4, 1900 in
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
He was an expert on birds
in the Caribbean. He died
on February 14, 1989 in
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
Herpetology
 Is the study of amphibians including frogs,
toads, and salamanders.
 It is also the study of reptiles including
snakes, lizards, and turtles.
 One of the biggest organizations of
herpetology is The American Society of
Ichthyologists and Herpetologists.
 Herpetology comes from the Greek word
ἑρπετόν (ἑρπετόν means creeping animal, and
the word λογία (λογία means knowledge.
 Someone who studies herpetology is called a
herpetologist.
Berta Lutz
Berta is a famous
herpetologist. She was
born on August 2, 1894 in
São Paulo. She loved to
study amphibians,
especially poison dart
frogs. She died
September 16, 1976 in
Rio de Janeiro.
Paleontology
 Is the study of prehistoric life.
 Paleontology got it’s name from the
Greek word παλαιός (παλαιός means
old or ancient) the word ὀντ ( meaning
creature ) and the word λόγος (λόγος
meaning study)
 One of the biggest parts in paleontology
are dinosaurs and fossils.
 Someone who studies paleontology is
called a paleontologist
John Horner
John Horner is a famous
paleontologist. He was born
on born June 15, 1946 in
Shelby, Montana. Horner
served as the technical
advisor for all of the Jurassic
Park films, and even served as
partial inspiration for one of
the lead characters, Dr. Alan
Grant. He is still alive today.
Psychology
 Psychology involves the scientific study
of mental functions and behaviors.
 Psychologists mo concepts such as
perception, cognition, attention, emotion,
phenomenology, motivation, brain
functioning, personality, behavior, and
interpersonal relationships.
 Someone who studies Psychology is
called a Psychologist.
Ivan Pavlov
Ivan Pavlov is a famous
psychologist. He was born
September 26 1849 in
Ryazan, Russia. He made
several discoveries and
ideas that were passed on
from generation to
generation. He won the
Nobel Prize for Physiology
or Medicine in 1904. He
died February 271936.
