Biofilms are collections of microorganisms surrounded by a matrix they secrete, attached to a surface. They are usually composed of mixed microbial species. Biofilms are made up of 85% matrix and 15% bacterial cells arranged in towers or mushrooms. They protect bacteria from threats and allow nutrient sharing and genetic exchange between cells. Biofilms form through a process of conditioning, adhesion, growth, and detachment of microbial cells on surfaces over time.
