The senses detect stimuli in both the internal and external environments. The five main senses are vision, hearing, taste, smell, and touch. Vision uses the eyes and photoreceptors like rods and cones to detect light. Hearing uses the ears and mechanoreceptors called hair cells that bend in response to vibrations. Taste and smell use chemoreceptors in the tongue and nose to detect chemicals. Touch uses mechanoreceptors in the skin to detect pressure, pain, and temperature. The senses send this information to the nervous system which responds to help maintain homeostasis.
