Meiosis involves two rounds of cell division. In meiosis I, homologous chromosomes pair up and crossover occurs between aligned genes. The homologous chromosomes then separate, with each daughter cell receiving one of the two homologous chromosomes. Meiosis II then follows, where the sister chromatids separate and move to opposite poles, resulting in four haploid daughter cells each with half the number of chromosomes as the original cell.
