3. What Is Mitosis
-A process where a single cell divides into two identical daughter cells.
-Major purpose of mitosis is for growth and to replace worn out cells.
-Divided into 5 phases.
4. DISCOVERY OF MITOSIS
Was discovered in frog, rabbit, and catcorneacells in 1873
Was discovered first time by Otto Butschli
Was described first time by the Polishhistologist Wacław in 1875 .
Discovered the stages of mitosis by Walther Flemming.
Derived from the Greek word “mitos”- Warp thread.
6. DNA in the cell is copied in
preparation for cell division
Outside of nucleus there are two
centrosomes, each containing a
pair of centrioles
Microtubules extend from these
centrosomes
Interphase
7. Prophase
The chromosomes start to
condense
The mitotic spindle begins to
form
-The nucleolus disappears
8. Prometaphase
The nuclear envelope breaks
down .
-The chromosomes are fully
condensed .
-The mitotic spindle grows more
9. Metaphase
All the chromosomes align at the
metaphase plate.
The two kinetochores of each
chromosome should be attached
to microtubules from opposite
spindle poles.
10. Anaphase
The sister chromatids pulled
apart by the mitotic spindle
Pulls one chromatid to one pole
and the other chromatid to the
opposite pole
11. Telophase
The mitotic spindle is broken
down
-Two new nuclei form
-Nuclear membranes and
nucleoli reappear.
-The chromosomes begin to
decondense and return to their
“stringy” form
