BIM for Manufacturers and Manufacturing
Afternoon, I am Robert Daniel technical & BIM coordinator for the roofing and façade Manufacturer Marley Eternit
This afternoon I will explorer the topic – What Package Should You Use? I hope this will help in your journey to implementation of BIM within your organisation
Once you have gathered and considered your results from the BIM4M2 compass, you should have a better understanding of your exposure to level 2 BIM in the UK.
An important part of your journey will be to consider the types of software & hosting options which are available to you, based on your compass results you may consider the option of Producing BIM objects
From a manufacturers perspective when considering BIM Implementation there are many situations where decisions are made, the numerous options available for software and then hosting can be daunting and negotiating this Minefiled, when not properly informed, can be a costly process
An early step in the right direction will be to understand the different software types & hosting options available which are available to you, when assessing your likely level of investment for BIM.
As highlighted in the survey carried out by BIM4M2 in 2014, 25 % of product manufacturers see investment as a barrier to BIM implementation.
Investment needn't be a barrier; by understanding the options which are available you can ensure that you pick the solution which is most appropriate for your organisation.
So to help negotiate a safe route through this Minefiled of options, I will explain what BIM authoring software packages are available and also how your BIM content can be hosted.
As we know BIM is about process and collaboration, it isn't Software.
The software packages which are used in BIM today are there to enable BIM In a project environment, these packages work in 3d and allow users to not only plan and design the project, but also model building life cycle, including cost, assembly & assignment management and facility operation
For the manufacturer being able to provide the structured data in the right format or geometry to the right level of detail will be important
The Main software tools used by the architect are often called Authoring Software Packages; these packages can be used to create BIM models and also they will be used to create manufacturer specific BIM objects which will then be used by architects within their models.
Some of the software vendors :
Autodesk, Nemetschek, Bentley and Trimble
These applications will be used to produce BIM models; other software is also available for anything from producing performance calculations for the building to validating the data contain in a BIM model such as Solibri.
To help understand I will give an overview for each of these applications, as you will appreciate I can only give a very broad overview.
Autodesk Revit is Autodesk’s platform for BIM.
It is offered in 3 variants, Revit Structure, Revit MEP and Revit Architecture.
Also available is Navisworks; a piece of software for reviewing integrated models
The authoring package is a complete multi discipline package, used for small to large projects, REVIT supports all phases of design, from conceptual studies through the most detailed construction drawings, documentation and schedules can also be produced.
You may have heard of the term BIM families before, this is the terminology used in Revit for BIM objects. These Revit families are created by using templates within the software, manufacturer BIM objects can then be built based on these templates.
Information gathered from industry surveys in the UK does indicate that Autodesk Revit is one of the most widely used BIM software packages
Graphisoft ArchiCAD are part of the Nemetschek group, ArchiCAD being the groups bests BIM solution.
ArchiCAD does claim to be the first object oriented BIM Architectural application available in the commercial market, and is a multidisciplinary packages used on all project small to large.
It doesn't create objects in the same way as Autodesk’s Revit application, here, the objects are programmed with a technology called GDL. This allows the software to work more efficiently with 3D geometry. Allowing each object to be customized with flexible parameters, without the object itself being changed.
Although not as widely used as Revit; ArchiCAD is also one of the main package used in the UK
The next product from the Nemetschek group is Vectorworks.
This application works well in both 2D and also 3D modelling.
The Vectorworks product line is one of their top solutions, although it is a great drawing and modeling tool, it is not the top company’s BIM solution, with ArchiCAD being Nemetschek main BIM solution.
As more features are added with each new release, Vectorworks is growing in popularity with architectural practices throughout the UK
Bentley Systems is another important software developer in the market, providing a multi-discipline solution, being used in building, plant, civil and geospatial vertical markets in the area of architecture & engineering,
The companys most popular solution has been Microstation a competitor for AutoCAD, nowadays the company’s solutions are evolving through BIM and the company has a line of packages that are object based.
From Building Analysis and Design tools, Facility Information Management to Project Collaboration
The Bentleys suite of products can be seen as a packages used more widely in the infrastructure sector,
Tekla & SketchUp are two packages offer by Trimble.
Tekla Structures is 3D construction modelling software with features that are optimised for concrete and steel design, typically used in the infrastructure and energy industries
The next offering from Trimble is SketchUp Pro, this is smaller easier to use software that allows most users to learn and operate the program within a few hours of first using.
SketchUp is open source, meaning that it is a platform is open to programmers to develop plugins for this software. allowing it be versatility seen by no other design program.
You find Sketchup being used amongst small to medium sized architects
Unfortunately none of the software is interoperable.
This means that as they are written using different languages; one file created in Revit will not directly work in ArchiCAD.
If you have chosen to create BIM content, there are options, either create content in all software application with as an open BIM solution or a closed BIM approach choosing a single software package which suites your organisation.
IFC;
You may have heard of IFC which stands for industry foundation classes,
IFC open standard which contains data schema and geometry for BIM … although this format can be read by all the main BIM Authoring Packages and is recognised as a method of sharing a fixed BIM model on q project level; when sharing individual BIM objects in IFC format the objects do loses some of their functionality.
IFC as a format is still in development and at this stage it is best if you are creating BIM Objects for this to be done in a native software format
If you want to learn more about IFC you can search for BuildingSMART, an international organisation who mange the IFC standard
Now I have given you a brief overview highlighting the difference between the software packages we should start to understand which package may be more suitable for our organisation.
A question you should be asking is .. What are your customers using?
Each of the software applications has its advantages, based on features like speed, power and work sharing, and quite often different applications are used in different sectors.
The most important thing to understand is what your customers are using, you may find that the most widely used BIM Authoring Package is Revit however you may also find that the majority of your customer base using an entirely different application.
Market research is important, BIM is very much about collaboration so you should could consider contacting your customers to understand their expectations
Now we have considered the authoring software options,
if you have created BIM Objects what do you do with them.
Do we host them on our own website ?
Or; do we host them on a library ?
A BIM Library is a free-to-use online web based library that consists of BIM objects which a specifier can use within his BIM Model.
These libraries enables construction professionals to locate and download BIM objects in one central location
These free to use online libraries consisting of BIM objects such for walls, windows, doors, foundations, cladding, roofs in a variety of different software formats.
Most BIM libraries will also offer the option to create High Quality BIM files.
BIM Libraries may contain some generic BIM objects aswell which are not manufacturer specific.
There are a number of organisations which offer a BIM content hosting service on a central product library.
These companies include …
I will now give another overview of each of these services, as you will appreciate I can only give a very broad overview and would recommend that you contact each organisation directly.
BIMobject corporation is built around a network of companies and partners all over the world.
It is vendor neutral and can build BIM objects to all the various BIM software on the market — Revit, ArchiCAD, SketchUp and AutoCAD. Components include
Downloads are tracked so manufacturers can get an idea of pipeline and customers are automatically updated if specified products have been updated or removed.
BIMstore is part of the North East BIM group Space, which includes a number of architectural, educational, consultative and BIM knowledgeable businesses, including BIM Show Live.
Defined as the iTunes store equivalent for specifiers, BIMstore
Specialise in Revit
Part of RIBA Enterprises The NBS National BIM Library is
It is vendor neutral and can build BIM objects to all the various BIM software on the market
Has an extensive collection of both generic and manufacturer objects
A smart database of over 10798 building products with project management, technical search and comparison features, making for efficient research & better informed specification decisions.
Specification search allows you to filter through the noise and find the best products
We currently have the biggest library of BIM objects in UK, including content created by Bimstore, National BIM Library and others
You may also find the authoring software packages have their own libraries which can be used, they are mainly filled with product supplied from outside the UK
BIMcomponents is ArchiCAD ‘s GDL content sharing platform.
And Autodesk Seek web is Revit’’s content sharing platform, catering mainly for manufacturers in the USA.
If you are considering using a hosting site, which one should you choose,
This dependents on what service they offer, make sure you fully investigate the benefits from each of the hosting services before you make your decision,
You could consider asking the following Questions when making your decision ?
You may also wish to consider the international perspective if you are you part of a corporation which has operations within Europe or further afield, what software are they using and are they using a hosting service locally.
I hope I have given a useful overview of the software and hosting options, are there any questions?
