Editor's Notes

  • #9 The UK Government Required a BIM Toolkit which included a digital plan of works and a single classification structure that everyone could use. Being a Government funded project, the BIM Toolkit is free to use; everybody can create an account and enjoy all the features and resources included with the Toolkit. Structured around the dPoW, the BIM Toolkit can be used to define how the Level of Detail and Level of Information develops during the course of a project. This includes what information is required at each stage of a project, as well as who is responsible for the production and delivery of that information. For Data, the Level of Information develops incrementally, with each stage building on the data delivered in the previous stage. The toolkit does not store a project’s or a product’s geometry or information. As well as being based around international standards such as COBie, the information requirements also draw from the many years of experience we have at the NBS for developing the specification and performance information requirements for many types of products. The BIM toolkit includes over 5,700 definitions. As part of the toolkit we’ve made available Manufacturer Product Data templates for the definitions. These Data Templates are delivered as simple spreadsheets that include all the data required at every stage of a project. The data templates should be viewed as a starting point that define the minimum data requirements, to which you should append any additional information that is pertinent to your product . The Data Templates can be downloaded for free, they can be completed for free and they can be made available to anybody who requests them completely for free. In the not too distant future Architects, Engineers and contractors who are responsible for the delivery of Level of Information requirements will be asking you to supply what they need. By completing the Manufacturer Product Data templates that are freely available from the BIM Toolkit today you’ll be one step ahead and you’ll have the confidence that you’re supplying data that is compliant with the Level 2 BIM requirements.
