-Big Data
• Big data is a broad term for data sets so large or
complex that traditional data processing applications are
inadequate.

The three V’s of big data constitute a
comprehensive definition
Currently three more V’s are also
considered

Smart Cities
Techne Summit 2015
Smart cities make optimal use of all the interconnected
information available today to better understand and
control its operations and optimize the use of limited
resources.

The need for smarter cities
 Growing population
 According to Frost and Sullivan, 60% of the world’s
population is expected to live in urban environments
by 2025.
 Resources management (water and energy use)
 Global warming (carbon emissions)
 Tighter city budgets
 Aging infrastructures

• All smart services and solutions in smart cities
rely heavily on high-end sophisticated
technologies;
• All smart services/ideas require substantial
investments to implement;
• Smart services are only for citizens;
• All smart cities have to be built from
scratch,(Egypt?).

The couch still rules!!
Techne Summit 2015
Smart public transit- transportation
• Intermittent bus lanes in Lisbon, Portugal
– Bus/HOV lanes, though they improve traffic flow, are often empty
– Wireless sensors in the ground detect presence of public
transport in the bus lanes, so that lanes are only reserved when
public transit vehicles approaching
Techne Summit 2015
Vehicles of tomorrow, or actually
of today!
• Researchers at Korea’s Advanced Institute of Science and
Technology (KAIST) recently constructed a seven and a half mile
stretch of asphalt roadway with specialized electric cables designed
to power batteries on a moving passenger bus.

Final thoughts…
and open-ended questions!
Techne Summit 2015
Mega Smart Cities- the future
According to Forbes, “it’s thought that
by 2020 we will be spending $400
billion a year building them”.
Techne Summit 2015
But… what do mega smart cities have in
common?
• They share two of the notoriously well-known
budget and schedule crossing elements.
Techne Summit 2015
Then, should we stop building them??
• Construction and IT projects!

  • #5 The mainstream definition of big data. I personally dislike the term BIG DATA, as it is suggestive to size, and Size ALONE doesn’t matter https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Big_data

  • #23 From a project management view, they are failing projects! Masdar City: Finishing has been delayed from 2015 to 2020 or 2025 due to financial crisis. Songdo: Originally scheduled to be completed in 2012, Songdo is about half finished, with about 50 million square feet built. Officials now predict it will be finished in 2017
