A verse by verse commentary on Acts chapter 11 dealing with the Apostle Peter explaining his actions, and the ministry of Barnabas, and the establishing of the church at Antioch.
Ephesians 4:11-16 Sins that cripple the church. God wants us to be holy and without sin. Sin in the church spreads to others. We must separate ourselves from sinful influences. Sin cripples the church and keeps it from being effective.

Rooted and Grounded in Love - Ephesians 3:14-21David Turner
That God will empower us through his Spirit to comprehend His love so that we may be filled with His fullness.
Not that we love God more, but that we comprehend just how much God loves us.
There are things which God wants to abound in our lives as Christians. Faith, Love, liberality, good works, consolation, hope, thanksgiving, pleasing God.
Take up the helmet of salvation eph 6 17aDavid Turner
The head is the location of our thoughts and memories. We must protect our minds by putting on the helmet of salvation. The mind cannot be transformed without Christ becoming the center of our thoughts. The transformation saves us from the vane belief systems and ethical impure thoughts of the world. Put on Christ and put on the helmet of salvation. Free PowerPoint Download at http://bibleguy.org/sermon-resources/powerpoints/886/06/17/

Each Sunday a lesson is given from some of that week's reading. This lesson covers July 27-Aug 2.
6th Sunday after Easter.
Today we here from Jesus in the Gospel reading that He will send His Holy Spirit to His disciples, to help in His mission here on earth. Today, we have the Holy Spirit with us. So let us partner Him in fulfilling His mission on earth, despite the suffering we face.
Do you not know: we are baptized into Jesus' death, you are a slave of sin or righteousness, as Christians we are dead to the law, the spirit of God dwells in you, a little sin spreads through the whole body, saints will judge the world, the unrighteous will not be in heaven, those who preach the gospel deserve payment, we should run the christian race to win, Christ in in you, friendship with the world is enmity with God.
In this message we look at a few New Testament passage that speak to us believers on how we should live our daily Christian lives in view of the End Time and life hereafter.

Homily: The Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity Sunday 2024.docxJames Knipper
Countless volumes have been written trying to explain the mystery of three persons in one true God, leaving us to resort to metaphors such as the three-leaf clover to try to comprehend the Divinity. Many of us grew up with the quintessential pyramidal Trinity structure of God at the top and Son and Spirit in opposite corners. But what if we looked at this ‘mystery’ from a different perspective? What if we shifted our language of God as a being towards the concept of God as love? What if we focused more on the relationship within the Trinity versus the persons of the Trinity? What if stopped looking at God as a noun…and instead considered God as a verb? Check it out…

Renewed in Grace
In Jude 17-23 Jude shifts from piling up examples of false teachers from the Old Testament to a series of practical exhortations that flow from apostolic instruction. He preserves for us what may well have been part of the apostolic catechism for the first generation of Christ-followers. In these instructions Jude exhorts the believer to deal with 3 different groups of people: scoffers who are "devoid of the Spirit", believers who have come under the influence of scoffers and believers who are so entrenched in false teaching that they need rescue and pose some real spiritual risk for the rescuer. In all of this Jude emphasizes Jesus' call to rescue straying sheep, leaving the 99 safely behind and pursuing the 1.

17 But we, brethren, having been taken away from you for a short
while—in person, not in spirit—were all the more eager with great
desire to see your face.
18 For we wanted to come to you—I, Paul, more than once—and yet
Satan hindered us.
19 For who is our hope or joy or crown of exultation? Is it not even you,
in the presence of our Lord Jesus at His coming?
20 For you are our glory and joy.
1 Therefore when we could endure it no longer, we thought it best to be
left behind at Athens alone,
8. 1 Th 2:17-3:13

The Church’s Growth
28. Conclusions
1. Satan will attack the church, disguised as an angel of
light, and the inside attacks are the most difficult to
defend against
2. Satan cannot take away that which is firmly planted with
a strong root.
3. The greatest joy we can have on this earth is to do the
works God has prepared for us.
4. Sometimes God allows us to see the crowns of our
exultation – those believers who come to faith by God’s
grace where we were planters or waterers
29. Conclusions
5. It is our job to strengthen and encourage fellow
believers by sharing the Word and God’s promises
6. Preaching Christ Crucified can be met with extreme
hostility, but we must preach it anyway
7. Serving God is not about getting the results we want.
8. Our goal is Holiness

taken
aporphanizô – to be made an orphan – i.e.. “orphanized”. Connotation as severe and violent, as in Acts 17:7-10 " as parents bereft of their children.
John 14:18 – Jesus said “I will not leave you as orphans, but I will come to you”.
A short while
Literally an hours time – intended to be brief
In person, not in spirit
Physical separation, not spiritual.
In “face” not in mind or heart
More eager with great desire
Abundant eagerness with great passion – indicates a very strong yearning, a sense of wanting to be together.
The way we have a great concern over our close friends when hospitalized or in serious distress
9:16
For we wanted to come to you -
The whole leadership team wanted to come to them
I, Paul
Paul emphasizes himself – the he personally wanted to come more than once
He was separated from the other leaders at Berea for a time
Yet Satan hindered us – THE INFLUENCE OF SATAN ON THE CHURCH
How does Satan work?
How does Paul know it is Satan, and not just people?
In Acts 16:6-7 it was the Holy Spirit who hindered them. Why Satan here?
Paul, having been inspired by the Holy Spirit clearly understood that Satan would certainly want to hinder them
Satan had previously tempted Jesus and failed – Matt 4
Satan influenced Peter – and Jesus said “Get behind me Satan” to Peter
Satan asked to sift Peter, but Jesus prayed for him
Satan entered into Judas – John 13:27
Satan continued to fight against the church and eventually found much success
Smyrna (Rev 2:9,10) – called a “synagogue of Satan”
Pergamum (Rev 2:13) – the Lord said “I know where you dwell – where Satan’s throne is
Thyatira (Rev 2:24) – who knew the “deep things of Satan”
Philadelphia (Rev 3:9) – influence was coming to them from the “synagogue of Satan”
Ephesus (1 Ti 3:6,7) – warning to Timothy to not fall into the snare of the Devil
Corinth (2 Cor 2:11) – so that no advantage would be taken of us by Satan, for we know his schemes
9:21
For who is our hope or joy or crown of exultation
Hope – the expected comfort/joy that they looked forward to
Crown of exultation – crown of great joy – the joy that comes from serving the Lord – faith unto works
The Thessalonians were the fruit or Paul, Silas, and Timothy’s “planting and watering”
Is it not even you, in the presence of our Lord Jesus at His coming?
They were the Harvest provided by God
Reference to Jesus return, will discuss more in 3:13
9:23
Another way to say our hope or crown of exultation
9:23
When we could endure it no longer
paints a picture an unbearable burden,
Agony
Which speaks to the deep compassion felt for their brethren and children in the faith
We thought it best to be left behind at Athens alone – i.e.. That Paul would be left alone in Athens. It appears that Paul, Silas, and Timothy all agreed to a plan in advance that Paul should go to Athens alone – perhaps when they were all at Berea
9:25
We sent Timothy –
the three agreed Timothy should go. Perhaps the fact that he was half Greek would make him less of a target to the Jews. A Jew (Paul) telling other Jews would have more credibility (be more of a threat) than a non-Jew. They could simply say “he is not even a Jew”
To strengthen and encourage you in the faith
Or to commission and encourage
Acts 14:19-22 – after being stoned and supposed for dead, Paul got up and went with Barnabas to Derbe to preach the gospel. Then he went back to Iconium and Lystra “strengthening the souls of the disciples, encouraging them to continue in the faith, and saying, "Through many tribulations we must enter the kingdom of God."
How do we strengthen other believers or even one another?? Acts 15:32 – by sharing God’s word, His promises, and the message of salvation.
Their faith was of SUPREME importance to Paul. Mentioned 5 times, vs 2,5,6,7,10
Paul, Silas, and Timothy were simply following the great commission, they were to make disciples and teach them to observe all the Jesus commanded
Encouraging them in the face of opposition (next verse)
9:28
So that no one would be disturbed by these afflictions
Disturbed = moved or shaken
Greek word means to wag the tail
Afflictions – same word translated elsewhere as tribulation
Matthew 13:21 when Jesus explains the parable of the sower, he describes the seed that is thrown on a rocky place can sprout right up, but it cannot establish a firm root. Jesus says it has no firm root in Himself, but is only temporary, and when affliction or persecution arises because of the word, immediately he falls away. This is Paul’s concern about the Thessalonians – Thessalonica was a rocky place and Paul is worried about their ability to establish a firm root due to the affliction and persecution.
2 Corinthians 4:16-18 16 Therefore we do not lose heart, but though our outer man is decaying, yet our inner man is being renewed day by day. 17 For momentary, light affliction is producing for us an eternal weight of glory far beyond all comparison, 18 while we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen; for the things which are seen are temporal, but the things which are not seen are eternal.
You yourselves know that we have been destined for this
Paul reminds them that persecution is part of the normal process of a believer and that they should expect it.
He elaborates further in verse 4
9:32
when we were with you, we kept telling you in advance that we were going to suffer affliction
Last week we went over Acts 16 where Paul and Silas had been beaten and jailed in Philippi.
The wounds = evidence of their recent persecution were still fresh on the backs of Paul and Silas
We also know that Jason and other Thessalonians were persecuted – having been brought before the city leaders and having to pay a fine
2 Cor 1:2-10 – Read it. Paul describes the suffering, affliction, and comfort
The Gospel message can be received with EXTREME HOSTILITY
Muslims beheading Christians
Many atheists have a passionate hatred towards Christians
Many Jews of the 1st century hated those who were preaching Christ crucified
9:36
When I could endure it no longer – repeated from verse 1
Paul waited as long as he could stand to wait to send Timothy
The suspense of knowing what happened to the Thessalonians was extreme
I also sent to find out about your faith
The 2nd appearance of the word “faith”
For fear that the tempter might have temped you
Satan is called the tempter when he tested Jesus in Matt 4:3
And our labor would be in vain
Paul says effectively the same thing to the Galatians in Gal 4:11
The vanity of the labor was only as it applied to the salvation of the Thessalonians, not the effort since it was ordained by God.
God could certainly ordain that those we are called to help do not get saved. Why?
Is 49:4 – Isaiah’s efforts were in vain to his direct and immediate audience, but we and those who followed are the beneficiaries of Isaiah’s work
1 Cor 3:8 – both the one who plants and the one who waters will receive a reward according to his own work
9:40
Timothy has brought us good news of your faith and love
They were the seed that fell on fertile soil
Their faith meant they were trusting in God despite the opposition
Their faith was a faith unto works = producing works
The Thessalonians has been convicted in their faith to the point of being willing to suffer for it
You always think kindly of us
As brothers and sisters in Christ
Or as children love their parents
Even more so, as one would be thankful for someone who saved your life
Longing to see us just as we also long to see you
It is clear that the love for one another was mutual
9:44
Comforted about you through your faith
Paul, Silas and Timothy were comforted that their efforts were not in vain
The planting and watering may sometimes be in vain as it relates to the earthly effort
The purpose may be for our own development – in which cases we have to be comforted by our own faith in God
How wonderful it was to see the results of the spreading of the Gospel, especially when they knew that Satan’s attack on the church had been repelled
9:45
This is the crown of the evangelist and apologist
Standing firm pictures an army of warriors for the Lord
It is amazing to me to see the Christian faithful that have taken their stance in the last year
Against abortion and Planned Parenthood
Against the LGBTA agenda
Against the oppression of Christians in Bakeries, etc.
Fighting for the right to free speech in evangelizing or speaking your beliefs against the ridiculousness of evolution, a multibillion year old earth and false science
Are you part of the army? Are you standing firm against the rulers of darkness and the principalities that fight against our God?
9:47
Continuation of the joy from verses 7 and 8
Psalm 116:12 says the same thing
Interesting how we think we are serving God, and yet when he causes the growth, we feel a great joy in knowing that we got to participate in His work.
Isn’t it amazing that we get such joy from knowing that we are serving the Lord. There is no other joy like it. It is a joy that goes beyond what we can get from this world
9:49
Praying - Remember the leaders continually in prayer for their spiritual children.
Most earnestly – repeated over and over and the language depicts a great eagerness
May complete what is lacking in your faith
The sanctification process
A reflection of the continued spiritual growth that is needed.
More of a general comment relating to their spiritual immaturity based on Timothy’s report back, such as
the nearness of Christ’s return and
details about his return,
the fate of those who have fallen asleep,
Chapters 4 and 5 will provide more depth on their ongoing sanctification
9:50
Verse 2:18 – Paul knew that Satan had hindered their return
Of course not even Satan can resist the Lord
Paul prays for a reunion, but understands that a reunion may not be in the Lord’s plans
Paul simply had to trust the Lord. Ps 37:1-5 is a good passage on trusting the Lord.
This verse is a remarkable proof of the unity of the Father and Son, that in the Greek here, and in 2Th 2:16, 17, the verb is singular, implying that the subject, the Father and Son, are but one in essential Being, not in mere unity of will.
9:53
Still Paul’s prayer to God for them
May the Lord cause you to increase
Abound in love for one another
Focus of this verse is their love for one another
Staying strong as warriors of the faith knowing that they will support and protect one another
And for all people
Love others and you love yourself
Including unbelievers
Including your enemies Mt 5:43-48
9:57
Establish your hearts without blame in Holiness
Man sees the outward appearances but God sees the heart 1 Sam 16:7
How do we establish our hearts without blame in Holiness?
The sanctification process will continue, but we are already counted blameless because of the blood of Christ
The coming of our Lord Jesus with all His saints
We believers are also counted among his saints
Reference to the rapture
The word for saints can also be translated as angels, but as we will see in the context of Chapter 4, the use here most likely refers to the saints.
