Cage culture involves raising fish in mesh boxes placed in bodies of water. It originated in Cambodia about 200 years ago when cages were used to transport live fish to market. Cages are constructed with frames made of wood, plastic or steel, with floats to keep them buoyant and weights to anchor them. They come in various shapes and sizes, usually square or rectangular, and are 20-60 cubic meters. Cages are either fixed in flowing water, floating in lakes/rivers/offshore, or submerged and movable in areas prone to cyclones. - 2. INTRODUCTION • Also known as Betta, Fighter Fish and Siamese Betta Fish. • This fish is belonging to member of Gourami Family. • This fish species is the native of Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, Vietnam, and East parts of India. • Size:- Maximum 6 cm to 8 cm. • Life Span: 3-5 years.
- 3. FACTS ABOUT BETTA • Bettas prefer slightly acidic water (pH 6.5 to 7) and warm water. Cold water can suppress the immune system and cause illness. • Bettas have several different tail shapes - the most common being the "veil tail." Other tail shapes include the “half-moon”, “double tail,” “crown tail.” • Bettas, unlike other species, are not schooling fish and will fight with each other, regardless of gender.

- 6. FOOD • BETTAS ARE CARNIVORES • Those kept as pets are typically fed freeze-dried bloodworms that are available at any pet store. • In the wild, bettas feast on bloodworms, shrimp, and insects like crickets, flies and mosquito larva.
- 7. BREEDING • Male create bubble nest on the surface. • If male interested in female it will flare his gills, spread his fins and dance around her. • If female interested in male it shows vertical strips on her body. • When both are ready, male “entice” female to the nest and female will eventually follow. • The mating process can take 1-3 hours.
- 8. BREEDING(Cont.) • The act of spawning itself is called a “nuptial embrace”. • In which male wraps his body around female. • In every embrace female lays 10-40 eggs. • Male turns and releases milt into water and fertile the eggs externally. • During and after breeding male uses his mouth to retrieve sinking eggs and deposit eggs into bubble nest. • Once female released all eggs .she is chased away by male territory. • Henceforth, the eggs remain in the male’s care. • Incubation lasts for 24-48 hours and after absorption of yolk sac fries leave the nest.
