I: Introduction
There have been many debates surrounding the proposition to teach safe sex and sexual health in
schools. It is a topic that many people have very strong beliefs and opinions on, and with an
increasingly liberal, open minded society there has been a large push towards incorporating safe sex in
schools and educating students on what safe sex is and how it can be done. A large number of studies
that have shown abstinence only policies are ineffective at preventing pregnancy and the transmission
of STDs, however many people still hold onto the belief that when talking about sex in schools we
should be teaching abstinence only because the only way to prevent pregnancy and STDs is if you do
not have sex at all and teaching about safe sex conflicts with many student s religious beliefs. People
who believe in abstinence only policies, or no sexual education at all, also hold onto the belief that
teaching safe sex education in schools will cause students to experiment and have sex, whereas if they
were not exposed to the discussion of sex in school, they would remain abstinent. While abstinence is
truly the only 100% effective means to not getting an STD or pregnant, it is highly ineffective and
doing our students more harm than good.
II: History
Teaching safe sex in schools dates back to 1916 when Maurice Bigelow wanted to promote teaching
about reproduction and sex in order to prevent the spread of Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs).
Bigelow also wanted to coerce students into waiting to have sex with someone they love, in hopes to
lower the number of people they have sex with, rather than having many partners (Carter, 2001). The
idea at this time was to teach sex to protect core, American family values; however, Bigelow s view
was incredibly progressive thinking. Sex had not been a topic of classroom discussion before this
time. III: Critical Media Literacy
The topic of safe sex tends to lean with political views. If someone who identifies as a conservative, or
tends to lean more to the right on the political spectrum, were to talk about sexual education, in

Many people must or choose to commute to school on a weekly basis for a variety of reasons. Before
the school year begins, students must make the choice of whether or not they want to live on campus
or commute. Commuting does not necessarily have to do with going to school, but commuting is
commonly seen for going to school or work. I had to decide whether or not to commute before my
Fall semester started, and picking was a tough choice because I live quite far from the college campus;
however, I chose to commute for various reasons and it was the right decision. People who commute
far distances, usually complain about the annoyances that come with commuting, and some of these
people will choose to move closer even though they were originally at driving distance; however, most
people who commute chose to continue commuting for as long as possible anyways. Dorming and
living on campus is much more convenient, but commuting to college, if possible, is much better since
commuting is cheaper, anyone can do it, family reasons, and of course much more comfortable.

Robber barons, famously known for their ruthless means of acquiring wealth back in the late
nineteenth century. They were awful. They were complete menaces to society and only ever created
wealth for themselves. Or, at least that s what is commonly taught in high school American history
classes, but author Burton Folsom Jr. offers an unique alternative perspective in his book, The Myth of
the Robber Barons. He provides a closer look at the results achieved by these infamous robber barons
to give insight into what actually happened in the wake of these entrepreneurs conducted business.
Folsom uses seven chapters on separate industries ran by robber barons to show, at least from an
overall economic view, The United States experienced a gross net benefit by the existence of robber

of Cornelius Vanderbilt. Vanderbilt started his steamboat industry life big as he was given the task of

Mrs.Dubose was a character who exhibited true courage until the end.
Another character who demonstrates courage is Atticus. He displays bravery when he shot Tim
Johnson, and when he accepted Tom Robinson s case. When the whole town was hiding in their
houses, Atticus stepped up to the task of killing Tim Johnson. Several things could have gone astray,
as shown in the quote, Miss and you ll go straight into the Radley house! (110). Despite the
consequences of missing, Atticus rose to the challenge. While everyone waited for Tim Johnson to
pass, Atticus was courageous enough to walk outside and shoot Tim. He knew his responsibility to the
town and instead of cowering behind the safety of his house, he faced Tim Johnson head on.

Spoken by one or two characters before the chorus appears. The prologue usually gives the
