Campus Assault Case Study
Introduction
Universities in Florida are on a mission to put an end to campus assaults. President Barack Obama
announced his initiative, where thereafter, the government released sixty seven schools that are
currently under investigation due to campus assault cases (USA Today, 2014). On January 22,
2014, Barack Obama established the White House Task Force to Protect Students from Sexual
Assaults. The White House Task Force to Protect Students from Sexual Assaults was created to
prevent assaults and help schools better respond to these incidents. Its purpose is to improve the
safety of students on college and university campuses.
The White House is trying to reduce this epidemic. However, the numbers of campus assaults are
continuing to grow ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Because the seriousness of this crime goes unnoticed, there will be a continuous need for studies
to be conducted to continue to make colleges and universities of Florida become more aware of
the situation at hand. The importance of this study was that society does not look over the college
victims of campus assaults. The researcher plans to examine campus assaults and its impact on
current college students within the state of Florida. This study is significant because the numbers
of campus assaults will continue to rise; some may even go unreported if no action is

Advantages And Disadvantages Of A Farmer
Farmer, the perfect profession?
This article will provide information of what being a farmer is, what is needed to become one, a
common routine and some positive and negative facts of this profession.
A farmer is a person who owns a farm and or takes care of it . Farmers normally perform two
kinds of professional activities: one is related with animals and the other with plants. The first one
includes all the process of breeding livestock, such as cattle, sheep, pig and goats. On the other
hand we have the work of agriculture; it consists on the growing of different kinds of plants for
human or animal consumption and products used for the development human life. Nowadays these
two activities can be performed separately, and that is why this ... Show more content on

Being in constant contact with nature is one of the most common statements made by different
farmers. Seeing a deer crossing happily through the fields is beautiful to see and it is not within
reach of other jobs. In addition to this, you are the one establishing your working hours and your
way of working it is your responsibility to choose when and how you want to work. Contrary to
popular belief, farmers are able to develop their creativity as they can try to perform new
techniques of sowing, for example, or, they can invent new devices to improve their work.
Another important aspect is that your work is going to be different through the years because
every harvest is going to be different from the previous one. Becoming a farmer will teach a lot of
new things, not only about plants and crops, but also you are likely to become a weather forecast.
For example if the clouds of the sky look like stone pavement it is very possible that the next day is
going to rain. Consuming your own harvest is one of the most rewarding experiences and the taste
of your own production is not going to taste the same as the products bought in the

Monolingualism In Australia
Australia is celebrated for its multiculturalism and acceptance of ethnic minorities, however,
according to linguist Ben crustal Australia...recaptured by a pervasive monolingual mindset which
sees monolingualism as the norm and multilingualism as the exception even as a problem or
deficit. Although ethnolects are viewed negatively by the mainstream society, its usage is both
beneficial to ethnic minorities and has been adopted as the Lingua Franca in some situations. As a
result of the majority s consensus on the dislike of ethnolects, minorities are pressured to adopt
Standard Australian English (SAE) in formal and public domains; limiting the usage of ethnolects.

Ethnolects for all minorities, especially for those who have lost their ethnic language due to

example, is heavily influenced by Arabic sounds and has distinct pronunciation differences; such as
the substituting the stressed vowel /a/ in the position of the schwa at the end of words. The use of

Essay about Analysis of The Underdogs by Mariano Azuela
Analysis of The Underdogs by Mariano Azuela
In The Underdogs written by Mariano Azuela, we are introduced to a character that strongly
symbolizes the fuel of the Mexican Revolution. Heroes like Demetrio Macias brought the Serrano s
hope of giving them what they felt they truly deserved. Although Demetrio Macias, the general
(colonel) of a rebel army is hunting down the army of Pancho Villa, he seems to have the same
ideals as the enemy. In addition to Demetrio Macias, we meet women like Camilla and War Paint
who represent the different roles that women played during the Mexican Revolution.
The character of Demetrio Macias proves to be quite ironic. One facet of his character reveals his
determination to find Pancho Villa s army,... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Demetrio plays the man who is full of power, and desires women and alcohol. He is even
interested in Luis Cervantes soon to be wife, when he drunkenly fights everyone to get what he
wants. Demetrio is a man of power, and feels that he can achieve what he wants through force.
The people that Demetrio represent are evident in the people that comprise his army, as well as
the rare souls like Luis Cervantes. Cervantes, man who was well off to begin with, but later lost
his fortune to the government. He quotes Before the revolution, I had my land all plowed, see,
and just right for sowing, and if it hadn t been for a little quarrel with Don Macio, the boss of my
town, Moyahua, I d be there in a jiffy getting the oxen ready for the sowing, see? (pg. 48) Luis
Cervantes explains his cause when he says The triumph of our cause, which is the sublime
triumph of Justice, because our ideal to be free the noble, long suffering people of Mexico is
about to be realized and because those men who have watered the earth with their blood and tears
will reap the harvest which is rightfully theirs. (pg. 69)
With respect to the degradation of women in The Underdogs, we must profile the two women
portrayed in the book. On one hand we have the conservative Camilla, and on the other, we have
War Paint. War Paint was the opposite of what society held as the typical woman. War Paint went

Vending Machines in Schools
Should vending machines be banned in schools? Abbas Abdulrazak MEL4601 Dr Wadsworth
November 2, 2009 Obesity is a serious and growing problem among adolescents in the United
States. In 1999, 13% of children aged 6 to 11 years and 14% of adolescents aged 12 to 19 years
in the United States were overweight. This prevalence has nearly tripled for adolescents in the
past 2 decades ( Fact Sheet ). A key cause for concern is that overweight adolescents are at higher
risk of medical conditions such as hyperlipidemia, glucose intolerance, hypertension, and sleep
apnea. Also, overweight adolescents are more likely to be overweight as adults, and they are at

Furthermore, vending machines are available to adolescents throughout the day. The
availability of vending machines gives students a good alternative to the cafeteria. The cafeteria
is usually crowded and hence vending machines allow students to skip the lines and grab a
quick bite. Also some students may not be able to get to the cafeteria before it closes for various
reasons; vending machines provide them with the convenience. They also allow for students to
grab a drink after vigorous exercise. However, a problem with all this is that it may disrupt
regularly scheduled meals. This in turn greatly disturbs the natural biorhythms of the body.
Because the body performs certain functions on a time schedule, irregular eating habits disrupt
the natural clock work of bodily processes ( Is Eating Between Meals Healthy? ). As mentioned
above, vending machines are loaded with junk food. Junk food is known to increase blood
sugar levels which can lead to behavior problems and impaired learning ability in children. This
is sometimes called the spike and crash syndrome. It is defined as the rapid ups and downs of
children s blood sugar levels when they eat too much sugar and overly processed carbs, especially
on an empty stomach (Lapine). The children start acting as if they ve had four cups of coffee and are

The Impacts Of The 18th And 18th Amendments
The Eighteenth and Nineteenth Amendments The Eighteenth Amendment states that, one year
after the states ratified the article, the making, selling, and importing or exporting of alcohol is
illegal unless for medicinal or religious reasons. Congress can pass any laws it finds necessary to
uphold the Eighteenth Amendment. If Вѕ of the states did not ratify the article within seven years,
then the article would not take effect. (18th Amendment)
One impact of the Eighteenth Amendment was the end, in theory, of the sale and consumption of
alcohol. America had just returned from World War Iwhen Prohibition was started. The men had
gotten addicted to morphine and heroine and could no longer buy those drugs so they bought the
cheapest thing they could find alcohol. This started a wave of drunkenness across the country and
the women were not happy. The women had taken men s place in the workforce while they were
gone and, when the men came back, they lost all their jobs to the men. But, the men were not
working. Instead, they were getting drunk all day, trying to forget what they saw at war. This
angered women greatly. Because the women had gained power from working the men s jobs during
the war, the women used their power to promote Prohibition across the country.
Another impact of the Eighteenth Amendment is the rise of organized crime. It is the law of
supply and demand. When the supply of a product, alcohol, goes down, the demand for it goes up.

The members of the Duke Lacrosse team did not have much support from the faculty as the
accusations were the headliners for many major media outlets. The impact of these allegations by
the Duke Lacrosse team was tremendous. The President of the University Richard Brodhead
canceled the entire season and called the situation sickening and repulsive (Jennings, 2009, p. 568).
Once again the support from the highest level at Duke University was not there for the three
members of the lacrosse team at the center of the allegations. The African American accuser Crystal
Mangum had support from the NAACP, Reverend Jesse Jackson, and the Durham County District
Attorney Mike Nifong. The coach of the team also resigned from his job as the season was
canceled. Mr. Nifong from the beginning of the investigation seemed to have his mind set on
convicting these white males of the allegations they faced from the accuser. The unethical manner
in which Mike Nifong proceeded in the investigation tested the judicial system. The tactics that
were used in the case undermined that you are innocent until proven guilty. A Duke was facing a
crisis little did the judicial system in North Carolina know that they were about to have their work
cut out for them as Mr. Nifong continued his journey to find these three lacrosse players guilty.

The Psalms Function As A School Of Prayer
Introduction
For almost two thousand years, the Psalms were essential to the devotional practice of the
Christian church, teaching the believer to pray in response to the living God, a confession of
praise and glory to the Almighty God. Thus, when the contemporary church thus that she is
joining a large group of people that for nearly thirty centuries based their prayers and worship in
those ancients words. In Eugene H. Peterson s view, there is no other place where can be seen
such a deeply and detailed form, of the human dimension in the Bible history as in the Psalms.
The aim of this paper is to analyze how the Psalms should be used in the church today. For that,
this study is divided into three parts: First, the Psalms and Prayer, where will be discussed how
the book of Psalms function as a school of prayer. Second, Christians and the use of the Psalms, in
this topic will be highlighted how Christians can find Jesus in the Psalms. Finally, putting into
practice is a topic that will explain the value and the need of using the Psalm in the church.
The Psalms and Prayer
The Psalter was the school that Israel and the church appealed to learn how to pray, which along
with Isaiah was the most cited book by Jesus and the apostles in the New Testament. For the first
Christians the rules were, be filled with the Spirit, speaking to one another with psalms. Thus, as
their Jewish fathers listened to the Word of Godthrough the Psalms its instructions and laments

Analysis Of Franklin Delano Roosevelt Signed Into Law
Following his election in 1933, Franklin Delano Roosevelt signed into law something radical for
its time: The Social Security Act. This act changed America s economic landscape completely, by
minimizing the long existing problem of retirees and the elderly living below the poverty line.
Simply put, Social Securityis a way to guarantee that older people, namely retirees, have at least a
minimal source of income in their later years, by providing around 40 percent of the average
person s yearly income. Social Security both is and functions as a defined benefit plan, wherein
benefits are decided by the amount of quarters than a person works, and are decided by a sliding
scale with caps (United States). As directed by the sliding scale, per dollar benefits are much
higher for people of lower incomes, while overall benefit amounts are higher for those of higher
incomes (Benefit). Both the scale and the caps are adjusted yearly according to inflation. Social
Security accumulates its funds into a trust fund, and puts excess money into investments in US
Treasury Securities, where interest is accumulated and put back into the fund. Social Security s
benefits are not affected by the investments. Since 1982, the Social Security trust fund has
experienced a net increase and in 2015, the asset reserves sit at 2.8 trillion dollars (Financial).
Despite this, the misinformed often point their fingers at the trust fund and claim that it is on its
last leg, and will soon run out. Every few

Motors, Gears, And Generators Lab
Motors, Gears, Generators Lab
Objectives:
1) Learn about motor and generator operation.
2) Generate and use motor torque/speed curves.
3) Learn about gear ratios and observe how they affect the rotational speed and torque of a motor or
generator.
Pre lab Questions
Answer the following questions before you begin the lab: For the motor characteristic curve shown
below, determine the equation of the line: torque (T) as a function of the rotational speed ( ). In the
figure below, is the stall torque and is the no load speed. The equation of the line should be written
in terms of the variables above.
How can you calculate the gear ratio of a simple gear train with two gears? List 4 expressions that
you could use to calculate the gear ratio. What is the difference between a motor and a generator?
(Hint: what are the energy conversions that occur in each)
Problem Description:
Motors and generators are used frequently in engineering applications. In fact, you will use them
in your final project. Gears (or pulleys) are usually used to transmit the power from the motor
(input) to the output. A pair of gears forms a simple gear train. As engineers, you will need to
understand how motors and generators work in order to pick appropriate ones to use in different
applications or to know how your design will behave when hooked up to a particular motor
/generator. In your final project for this course, you will use a generator (i.e. for wind power
generation) and

Santa Ana Winds are Meaningful to Authors Joan Didion in...
The Santa Ana winds obviously mean a great deal to Didion and Thomas which is why they
regard it as sort of a powerful force in nature. In The Santa Ana by Joan Didion, the wind is
portrayed as a force that deprives people of happiness. This concept is highlighted when she states
that to live with the Santa Anna is to accept . . . a deeply mechanistic view of human behavior. In
Brush Fire by Linda Thomas, it is portrayed more like a normal power of nature. Her concept is
highlighted when she brings up the fact that the chaparralplant burns due to the winds but then it
returns in the spring which symbolizes regrowth. Throughout their essays, both authors use diction

viewed as a start of another life , which is why once again the winds allow a cycle to take place.
Lastly, Didion adds to her Pathos by using words and imagery to some degree to highlight the
destruction caused by the winds. The usage of words like death, shot, killed, burn, destruction
brings out the ominous tone prevalent in the piece. Thomas ,though, uses words like passionate and
embrace (which makes it seem like it is a normal occurrence) to add to her Pathos. Thus, both the
authors use the three appeals to get their points across to the audience.
Second, both authors use structured syntax in order to convey their message. Thomas uses a
simple syntax whereas Didion uses more of a complex one. Both of them use varying length of
sentences; however the passages seem to go from general to specific. The evident structure is that
they first describe their environment and the subject in the beginning as well as introduce their
message. Then they move on to give the reader some logic behind these ideas. Finally, they
conclude by ending their narration with a summary of their arguments. Also, they both use first
person narration in their pieces. Thomas seems to have written the entire piece from her own
perspective when compared to Didion, who seems to have used less of her view specifically in the
first half of the piece. This perspective gives

Introduction
Sexual conflict, the conflict between the evolutionary interests of individuals of the two sexes, is
recognized as a pertinent factor for adaptation. Traits of one sex that reduce the fitness of the other
sex ultimately inflicts antagonistic selection on that sex to evolve to counteract this cost. For
example, sexual conflicts can arise over traits like mating duration, where the two sexes adapt and
counter adapt in order for each sex to achieve its ideal fitness levels. However, the fact that
adaptations have effects on other fitness components suggests that the detection of sexual conflicts
on individual traits can be complicated. The bean beetle Callosobruchus maculatus is a prime
example of sexual conflict and is widely considered a model organism to scientists for its ability to
represent how mating behavior influences biological processes such as reproduction. The model
organism dedicates its short life span to mating and laying eggs on beans, thereby enabling
scientists to use the beetles for experimentation. Two of C. maculatus populations are Burkina Faso
(BF), originating from Africa, and Southern India (SI), originating from Asia. The geographic
differences these populations encounter ultimately impact their reproduction

At the beginning of the seventeenth century, Spain possessed the most populous empire in the
world, controlling almost all Africa. To most Europeans, Spain still seemed the greatest power of
the age, but the reality was quite different: the treasury was empty (Spielvogel P 512). A major
political development inspired by growing nationalism was the alliance of small states into two
central new nations: Italy and Germany. Before the second half of the 19th century, Italy was a
collection of city states that were only loosely allied with one another. The German Confederation
was created by the Congress of Vienna in 1815, but it had been controlled by the Austrian and
Prussian Empires. In 1848 major rebellions broke out within the confederation, inspired by liberals
who envisioned a German nation ruled by parliamentary government. The revolutions failed, and
many liberals fled the country, but they proved to be an excuse for the Prussian army to invade

Examples Of Escape In Slaughterhouse-Five
Abstract: This thesis attempts to analyse the relationship between physical and psychological
escape as reflected in Su Tong s Fleeing in 1934 , Yu Hua s 1986 , and Kurt Vonnegut s
Slaughterhouse Five. Textual analysis reveals that Su Tong s delineation of escape is external but
the influence becomes internal as villagers morality has been lost as a result of the escape, whereas
Yu Hua and Kurt Vonnegut
s representation of escape emphasises on the psychical escape when both
protagonists in the novels look for derangement as a means of escape. Coincidently, the three
novelists all agree on the same notion of the inescapability of history.

Robert Louis Stevenson’s The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll...
The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde is a gothic horror novella written by Robert Louis
Stevenson in the Victorian era. The novella follows a well respected doctor Henry Jekyll and his
struggle between good and evil when he takes a potion and becomes Mr Hyde.
Robert Louis Stevenson the author of the novella The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde was
born in Edinburgh in 1850 and died at the young age of forty four. He wrote the book in 1886. As a
child he was very close to his nurse and when he was ill she used to read him
Bible stories as he was brought up in a strict Catholic tradition, which he later rebelled against.
This led to his fascination for his city s low life and for bizarre characters, which ... Show more

When describing the door, Stevenson includes detail about the surrounding and the atmosphere as
being dark weather, foggy and mysterious: a black winter morning . The door also represents
mystery, as we do not know the contents of the building: showed no window, nothing but a door .
The building is described as being a certain sinister block which suggests it looks evil. The
atmosphere is unwelcoming around the door as it has neither bell nor knocker which shows that
Mr Hyde did not want any visitors.
Most of the changes from Dr Jekyll into Mr Hyde take place in the laboratory. This is an odd
setting to use, as it is a symbol of what could be the origin of evil. Stevenson insinuates this by
the way he uses the butler (Poole) to say that it used to be a dissecting room this is where many
dead bodies will have been experimented on. Since the symbols of evil in this novella are Mr
Hyde and his use of medicine this could also be the case as the potion that went wrong, and created
and evil individual, was made here. When we later learn
the door leads to a courtyard, which allows Mr Hyde into the laboratory this begins to feel strange,
as we do not understand why Mr
Hyde is going into Dr Jekyll s grounds.

considered north? I reiterate that I believe is it dependent upon personal opinion and lived
experience. The influence of resource base economy is significant because it determines, many
peoples source of income as well the community s development. Schmidt mentioned the relationship
of hinterland metropolis as company from urban centres benefitting from the profit of the resources
and not the communities (p.5). Schmidt (2000) also highlighted that the North has been defined as
marginalized part of Canada as the majority of Canada s population is 200km or less from the U.S

Another characteristic that defines northern social work is the scarcity of service provisions
including, social services, food services, transportation, health services and other basic needs
services. Schmidt (2000) explained the

Lee Lead The Army Of Northern Virginia
Lee lead the Army of Northern Virginia across to Potomac in Maryland in August of 1862.
Reasons for this invasion included taking pressure off the Shenandoah Valley The Breadbasket
of the Confederacy at harvest time; encouraging European support for Confederacy by winning a
battle on northern soil; and demoralizing Northerners to reduce their support for the war while
encouraging the salve holding state of Maryland to secede and join the Confederacy. Lee
daringly divided his own army and sent groups to capture objectives. On September 9, he issued
Order No. 191 in which he informed commanders of objectives and routes. Union soldiers of the
27th Indiana Regiment noticed a bundle of cigars discarded on the ground in a field. Upon... Show

Late afternoon on September 16th, McClellan ordered Maj. Gen. Joseph Hooker s I Corps to
investigate the enemy across the creek. Brig. Gen. George G. Meade s troops attacked Brig.
Gen. John Bell Hood s men on the East Woods, causing a minor scuffle. McClellan planned out
his attack as artillery fire rang through the night. He decided to focus the strength of his force on
East Woods to overwhelm the left flank. Unfortunately, because of his order for Hooker s probing,
it gave Lee a strong indication of his intentions. McClellan did not thouroughly communicate the
plans of attack to his subordinate commanders. Instead, he gave directions for each of their corps,
not including the entirety of the plan. Due to the lack of information, commanders could not easily
oversee happening outside of their sector. This lack of proper coordination gave two consequences.
First, the Unions advantage of size, two to one, became less of an benefit as they were not as
controlled as the Confederacy. Second, the Battle of Antietamranged between three phases in the

Elijah McCoy was an African American who had may inventions that changed the world of train
travel, but faced many hardships along the way. Elijah McCoy was born in Colchester, Ontario,
Canada, and was later sent to Edinburgh, Scotland by his parents to study mechanical engineering,
he then moved to Detroit, Michigan. Due to racism he could only get a job as a fireman or oilman
on a steam engine train. McCoy s first invention the automatic lubricator was a revolutionary way
of lubricating steam engines without having to shut them down for long periods of time which
saved an enormous amount of time and effort in transportation.

With the train industry growing the need for bigger trains and freight cars were a must and James
J. Hill builder of the Great Northern Railroad he made this happen building trains 4 times the size
of the old ones. They used a super heated steam system that made Elijah McCoy s first patent of the
lubricating system not compatible with these newer trains. These trains were lubricated with a
mix of oil and powdered graphite so that the trains parts could be lubricated properly. The
problem with Elijah s first patent is that with the new mix of graphite the lubricator would clog
up. This all changed in April of 1915 when he received a patent for a new and improved
lubricator in which he called Locomotive Lubricator with this patent he stated that it permitted the
use of graphite without clogging. Hayden Cites a railroad superintendent states We have found
the McCoy Graphite Lubricator to be of considerable assistance in lubrication of locomotives
equipped with superheaters. There is a decided advantage in better lubrication and reduction of
wear in valves and piston rings, and as a well lubricated engine is more economical in the use of
fuel, there is unquestionably a saving in fuel. When Elijah McCoy was younger his parents ran
away from the United States using the underground railroad due to racism and them being slaves.

William Golding s Lord of the Flies
The first chapter of the novel, The Lord of the Flies, by William Golding is effective in
establishing the characters, concerns and language for the remainder of the book, as well as
introducing the main themes of the novel; that the problems in society are related to the sinful
nature of man and good verses evil. In Golding s first chapter, the main characters are introduced,
we see many ominous signs of what s to come through the authors choice of language and the
beginning of rivalries, issues and concerns are portrayed which are to continue throughout the rest
of the book. The microcosm on the Island is presented from an early stage, as well as themes that

These qualities Golding describes Ralph to have in this first chapter, and incredibly important for
the remainder of the novel.
It is no surprise that Piggy s nickname is such. When Golding introduces the character, he has just
come out of the bushes, after suffering from diarrhoea through eating too many unripe berries.
The author continually relates to the fact that the boy is fat, and in many descriptions, Golding
blatantly says this such as The fat boy looked startled . As we progress through the early pages,
we learn more of Piggy s appearance through the conversation between Piggy and Ralph. I ve
been wearing specs since I was three . With these continual descriptions, we are able to obtain a
vivid and detailed image of this fat boy. The specs that Piggy wears are a symbol of his
intelligence that is to be superior to the other boys. Individuals that wear glasses have always
been considered to be intelligent and smart, and Piggy is no exception to this. His constant
attempts to unite the group of boys under the laws of the conch are to try to establish the same
society of that in the old counties and of what they are used to. Piggy is not a natural leader he
has the brains, but not the courage. We can see this when Golding describes the boys reaction to
the loud and bossy Jack: He shrank to the other side of Ralph...and secure from the other side of
Ralph, he spoke timidly . Many

Feudalism In Song Of Roland Analysis
Feudalism in Song of Roland
Song of Roland, the oldest major surviving work of French literature, is an epic poem based on
the Battle of Roncevaux Pass in 778 C.E. between the Franks and the Basques. It is believed that
the epic circulated in song form before it was written down between 1040 and 1115 by Turoldus,
a Norman poet. The epic served a political role in inspiring the Frank Christian warriors during
the Crusades of the 1100 s, a series of wars against the Islamic world over the control of
Jerusalem. The center of the story is Count Roland, a Christian knight from King Charles army, and
the fight against King Marsilion and the Muslims of Saragossa of modern Spain. Due to the time in
which it was written, the epic features the social, political, and economic system of feudalism.
Feudalism was based on the exchange of land for military service (Alchin 1) between the king and
his vassals. This system was used in Christian medieval Europe between the 9th and 15th centuries.
In Song of Roland, feudalism is portrayed through the concepts of hierarchy, rights and obligations,
and the perfect knight.
Feudalism works through a socioeconomic hierarchy that is reflected in the epic. In Christian
medieval Europe, feudalism...resembles a pyramid, with the lowest peasants at its base and the
lines of authority flowing up to the peak of the structure, the king (Alchin 1). However, the
pyramid does not stop there, as God and the Pope, in that order, occupy positions at the top. The
king claimed ownership of all the land in the country, but he sometimes granted areas of land
called fiefs. The recipients of these areas were lords, who were men of high office. In the
pyramid, these lords were below the king and pledged their loyalty by swearing to serve and
protect [him] (Alchin 1). The lords gave some of this same land to the subordinate rank, the
vassals. The vassals, also called dukes and counts, were men who provided allegiance and
services to the lords and the king in return for fiefs. Among the vassals were the knights, who were
less powerful military men (Alchin 1) who fought for the lords and the king. Lastly, at the bottom
of the pyramid were the peasants, who belonged to the [vassal s] land and

I can relate to her. A lot of college students including myself take on too much stress and we
strive to please others when really we should accept ourselves. Mary Rowlandson struggles with
taking in the fact that God accepts her and her situation is a trial she is going through in life that
she will overcome. I also appreciate this work because Mary Rowlandson wants to do many
things, how to see her family, but the Indians do not let her do anything. In this case by comparing
it with me I can say that many times I want to do too many things, but at the same time, something s
are out of my control sometimes life puts us in situations that make things impossible and we need
to learn how to make the best of something and accept it. It is meaningful to me because Mary is
put in a situation where she cannot control things. Eventually she is able to see her family. She
never gave up on them and she made the best out of the situation she was in. In my life I know
there are things that are out of my control, but I am learning that if we keep pursuing life instead
of giving up, things will fall in place. A lot of times we have a vision of out things ought to be.
As for Mary, she wanted to see her family instantly, but she couldn t. Things do fall into place with
perseverance but they don t always work out the way we think it will. This book changed my way
of thinking toward things, since this reading taught me to be patient, because the use of Mary

Issues of Race in The Prince of Egypt
The film The Prince of Egypt tells the tale of Moses. This essay will focus on how the movie
handled the issue of race. In terms of the essay, race can be defined as, the conflict between the
Egyptians and Hebrews. In particular this essay will focus on the depiction of slavery, Moses
killing an Egyptian, and the relationship between Mosesand Ramses. The conflict between the
Egyptians and Hebrews was well demonstrated throughout the movie. Although comparing it to
Exodus, the conflict was portrayed less brutal. The animosity between the Hebrews and
Egyptians is played down. The relationship between Ramses and Moses shows compassion
towards Egyptians and Hebrews. The issue of race is evident in the prince of Egypt but is
played down. This can be seen through less brutality inflicted on the slaves, when Moses kills an
Egyptian, and the relationship between Ramses and Moses. When the Prince of Egypt would
show the scenes of slavery, they were seen as less brutal. For example during the opening scene
the Hebrews are shown building Egypt. While this is going on the viewer is able to see how the
Hebrew were treated by the Egyptians. The singing puts the scene in a less intense mode. The
only dialogue is song which is sung for promise of going to the promise land. Instead of focusing
in on the brutality of slavery, the scene gives hope to the slaves. So the Egyptians made the Israelites
their slaves. They appointed brutal slave drivers over them, hoping to wear them down with

feel that they have a Biblical right to occupy the areas of the West Bank. The author then goes on

I feel that the author makes a strong point in his next argument when discussing the Palestinian
justification to land rights and their feelings surrounding this topic. The author discusses how
because the Palestinians feel as if they are under occupation that they have the right to resist in a
violent manner. He points out how this viewpoint and occupation has helped to create violent
movements such as Hamas. In addition to this the author continues this argument by stating that
this violence only breeds more violence as it creates a desire for revenge. I feel that this is a
strong point because it not only addresses the mindset of Palestinians but also provides an
explanation for why the violence in the area continues. The next issue of the choices faced is also
a strongly supported one as is shows how various solutions would and have been seen over time.
The first potential choice is to expel Palestinians but the viewpoint that has come over time is that
this is not only an immoral thing to do but it would also create very negative international backlash.
The second point is that over time those living in the area have come to realize that violence has
created hardships that affect everyone involved and because of this maintaining occupation over an
extended period will not be doable. The third, and potentially strongest point, is that by simply
granting Palestinians the territories they desire it would either take away Palestinian

Taking a Look at Pharmacists
Pharmacy is an essential part of modern day health care. Pharmacists today are well trained,
highly skilled and easily accessible to the public. However, pharmacy was not always as
convenient and advanced as it currently is today. Since the times of prehistoric man, pharmacy has
evolved greatly over the years and has become a safer, more efficient and more important part of
society.
There are still many opinions about pharmacy s origin because many theories are based on logic
and analogies rather than concrete evidence. Much is known about prehistoric diseases due to
the damage of people s bodies found by archaeologists in ancient bones. However, finding
evidence of early man trying to use natural resources as medicinal drugs is scarce. Prehistoric
man viewed the causes of diseases as wraths from supernatural or spiritual beings. This caused our
ancient ancestors to practice a type of magic which used plants and often objects for rituals to
make peace with evil and disease causing spirits ( Kremers, 3).
The ancient people learned many things from instinct. Things like water, an herb or mud were
most likely man s first soothing applications. Trial and error helped man learn which substances
brought the best results and shared them with other people. The advanced profession of pharmacy
most likely evolved from simple and crude methods used by our ancient ancestors (A History 1).
The farthest date that pharmacy can be traced back to is about 4000 B.C. The Sumerian population

Summary Of Rhetorical Strategies
Many authors have found that persuading an audience is sometimes the easiest way to grasp the

What Was The Causes Of The Anglo-Boer War
The Anglo Boer War remains the most terrible and destructive armed conflict in the history of
South Africa. It shaped the history of South Africa in the 20th Century and therefore left a legacy
marking the end of the long process of British conquest of South African societies. Conflicting
political ideologies of imperialism and republicanism, including the tension between the political
leaders, like the Boer leader Paul Kruger and the British leader, Cecil Rhodes. These were some
of the causes of the war. The discovery of diamonds in Johannesburg and gold on the
Witwatersrand also pricked the British interest in South Africa, especially after the Global
Financial Panic of 1873. The Anglo Boer War or also known as The First South African

This angered the British and seized their lands. In 1881 the influential Boer leaders felt that they
had had enough of being British Afrikaners concluding that meetings and protests were useless
triggering the First Anglo Boer in 1880 1881. This was a classic underdog rebellion in which
Boer commandos ambushed British forces, and was conducted across forbidding distances along
barely navigable terrain (Nasson, 2006). But this was the advantage of the Boers as they knew the
Terrain better that the British and also knew how to use gun power better because of their many

The Walking Dead Maggie Greene Analysis
The Walking Dead: Maggie Greene
The Walking Dead is full of drama and death. The only thing we really know is to stay away from
the bloodthirsty walkers and try to live. Maggie Greene is trying to survive in a post apocalyptic
world that doesn t care if she lives or dies. Maggie s traits, purpose, and beliefs are what make her
grow from a young woman to a woman with a warrior s leadership skills. Maggie s traits that she
gained from her father helped make her the woman she is today. Her father, Hershel Greene, was
a well respected southern Veterinarian and farmer. He always instilled in Maggie to have faith.
Faith is in her roots, and always helps her when she s feeling lost or down. When Maggie s mother
died she started to shoplift and smoke, but she eventually realized that wasn t the right thing to
do and restored her faith. Hershel also taught Maggie to be honest and loyal. Her loyalty shows
when Ricks group shows up to the farm with Carl. Carl has a gunshot wound and Rick keeps
insisting that he needs to tell his wife, Lori. Maggie knows it s the right thing to do and goes out
on horseback to find Lori and bring her back to the farm. Maggie s honesty is always there even
when she doesn t want to listen to her father and tell him the truth. These traits will always be a
part of Maggie, and will never let her down in this post apocalyptic world.
Maggie s purpose is to always be strong for the others while never carrying her heart on her sleeve.

The Lone Ranger And Tonto Fistfight In Heaven And Indian...
Native American Oppression in Sherman Alexie s The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in
Heaven and Indian Killer Sherman Joseph Alexie was born on October 7, 1966. He grew up on
the Spokane Indian Reservation and now resides in Seattle, Washington. Sherman Alexie was
asked in an interview, When did you start writing? and his answer was simple, I started writing
because I kept fainting in human anatomy class and needed a career change. The only class that
fit where the human anatomy class had been was a poetry writing workshop. I always liked
poetry (Highway 2). Alexie has written several novels, most of which express the oppression and
problems of Native Americans, including The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven and
Indian Killer. In The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven, we read a collection of twenty
two stories all about young male protagonists and their everyday struggle against alcoholism,...

This novel has a tone that feels much more tragic. Although we are presented with some scenes
of laughter, the protagonist does not join in, keeping the tragic tone alive. The protagonist is

giving birth at the young age of 14 years old. Immediately after birth, having her baby taken

once he gets there, he quickly realizes that he was wrong as all of his coworkers are white. He isn

his roots and kills a white man. He scalps and mutilates the body and cannot stop the sinful act of

Congress can pass any laws it finds necessary to uphold the Eighteenth Amendment. If Вѕ of the states did not ratify the article within seven years, then the article would not take effect. (18th Amendment) One impact of the Eighteenth Amendment was the end, in theory, of the sale and consumption of alcohol. America had just returned from World War Iwhen Prohibition was started. The men had gotten addicted to morphine and heroine and could no longer buy those drugs so they bought the cheapest thing they could find alcohol. This started a wave of drunkenness across the country and the women were not happy. The women had taken men s place in the workforce while they were gone and, when the men came back, they lost all their jobs to the men. But, the men were not working. Instead, they were getting drunk all day, trying to forget what they saw at war. This angered women greatly. Because the women had gained power from working the men s jobs during the war, the women used their power to promote Prohibition across the country. Another impact of the Eighteenth Amendment is the rise of organized crime. It is the law of supply and demand. When the supply of a product, alcohol, goes down, the demand for it goes up. This act changed America s economic landscape completely, by minimizing the long existing problem of retirees and the elderly living below the poverty line. Simply put, Social Securityis a way to guarantee that older people, namely retirees, have at least a minimal source of income in their later years, by providing around 40 percent of the average person s yearly income. Social Security both is and functions as a defined benefit plan, wherein benefits are decided by the amount of quarters than a person works, and are decided by a sliding scale with caps (United States). As directed by the sliding scale, per dollar benefits are much higher for people of lower incomes, while overall benefit amounts are higher for those of higher incomes (Benefit). Both the scale and the caps are adjusted yearly according to inflation. Social Security accumulates its funds into a trust fund, and puts excess money into investments in US Treasury Securities, where interest is accumulated and put back into the fund. The Santa Ana winds obviously mean a great deal to Didion and Thomas which is why they regard it as sort of a powerful force in nature. In The Santa Ana by Joan Didion, the wind is portrayed as a force that deprives people of happiness. This concept is highlighted when she states that to live with the Santa Anna is to accept . . . a deeply mechanistic view of human behavior. In Brush Fire by Linda Thomas, it is portrayed more like a normal power of nature. Effects Of Male Competition On Mating Behavior Vassar College The Effects of Male Competition on Mating Behavior in Burkina Faso and Southern India Populations of Callosobruchus maculatus Rachel Chernet Biology 106 01 Professor Czesak Thursday, November 10, 2016 Introduction Sexual conflict, the conflict between the evolutionary interests of individuals of the two sexes, is recognized as a pertinent factor for adaptation. Traits of one sex that reduce the fitness of the other sex ultimately inflicts antagonistic selection on that sex to evolve to counteract this cost. For example, sexual conflicts can arise over traits like mating duration, where the two sexes adapt and counter adapt in order for each sex to achieve its ideal fitness levels. However, the fact that adaptations have effects on other fitness components suggests that the detection of sexual conflicts on individual traits can be complicated. The bean beetle Callosobruchus maculatus is a prime example of sexual conflict and is widely considered a model organism to scientists for its ability to represent how mating behavior influences biological processes such as reproduction. The model organism dedicates its short life span to mating and laying eggs on beans, thereby enabling scientists to use the beetles for experimentation. Hill builder of the Great Northern Railroad he made this happen building trains 4 times the size of the old ones. They used a super heated steam system that made Elijah McCoy s first patent of the lubricating system not compatible with these newer trains. These trains were lubricated with a mix of oil and powdered graphite so that the trains parts could be lubricated properly. The problem with Elijah s first patent is that with the new mix of graphite the lubricator would clog up. This all changed in April of 1915 when he received a patent for a new and improved lubricator in which he called Locomotive Lubricator with this patent he stated that it permitted the use of graphite without clogging. Hayden Cites a railroad superintendent states We have found the McCoy Graphite Lubricator to be of considerable assistance in lubrication of locomotives equipped with superheaters. There is a decided advantage in better lubrication and reduction of wear in valves and piston rings, and as a well lubricated engine is more economical in the use of fuel, there is unquestionably a saving in fuel. • 28. Feudalism In Song Of Roland Analysis Feudalism in Song of Roland Song of Roland, the oldest major surviving work of French literature, is an epic poem based on the Battle of Roncevaux Pass in 778 C.E. between the Franks and the Basques. It is believed that the epic circulated in song form before it was written down between 1040 and 1115 by Turoldus, a Norman poet. The epic served a political role in inspiring the Frank Christian warriors during the Crusades of the 1100 s, a series of wars against the Islamic world over the control of Jerusalem. The center of the story is Count Roland, a Christian knight from King Charles army, and the fight against King Marsilion and the Muslims of Saragossa of modern Spain. Due to the time in which it was written, the epic features the social, political, and economic system of feudalism. Feudalism was based on the exchange of land for military service (Alchin 1) between the king and his vassals. This system was used in Christian medieval Europe between the 9th and 15th centuries. In Song of Roland, feudalism is portrayed through the concepts of hierarchy, rights and obligations, and the perfect knight. Feudalism works through a socioeconomic hierarchy that is reflected in the epic. In Christian medieval Europe, feudalism...resembles a pyramid, with the lowest peasants at its base and the lines of authority flowing up to the peak of the structure, the king (Alchin 1). However, the pyramid does not stop there, as God and the Pope, in that order, occupy positions at the top. The king claimed ownership of all the land in the country, but he sometimes granted areas of land called fiefs. The recipients of these areas were lords, who were men of high office. In the pyramid, these lords were below the king and pledged their loyalty by swearing to serve and protect [him] (Alchin 1). The lords gave some of this same land to the subordinate rank, the vassals. The vassals, also called dukes and counts, were men who provided allegiance and services to the lords and the king in return for fiefs. Among the vassals were the knights, who were less powerful military men (Alchin 1) who fought for the lords and the king. Lastly, at the bottom of the pyramid were the peasants, who belonged to the [vassal s] land and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The conflict between the Egyptians and Hebrews was well demonstrated throughout the movie. Although comparing it to Exodus, the conflict was portrayed less brutal. The animosity between the Hebrews and Egyptians is played down. The relationship between Ramses and Moses shows compassion towards Egyptians and Hebrews. The issue of race is evident in the prince of Egypt but is played down. This can be seen through less brutality inflicted on the slaves, when Moses kills an Egyptian, and the relationship between Ramses and Moses. When the Prince of Egypt would show the scenes of slavery, they were seen as less brutal. For example during the opening scene the Hebrews are shown building Egypt. While this is going on the viewer is able to see how the Hebrew were treated by the Egyptians. The singing puts the scene in a less intense mode. However, pharmacy was not always as convenient and advanced as it currently is today. Since the times of prehistoric man, pharmacy has evolved greatly over the years and has become a safer, more efficient and more important part of society. There are still many opinions about pharmacy s origin because many theories are based on logic and analogies rather than concrete evidence. Much is known about prehistoric diseases due to the damage of people s bodies found by archaeologists in ancient bones. However, finding evidence of early man trying to use natural resources as medicinal drugs is scarce. Prehistoric man viewed the causes of diseases as wraths from supernatural or spiritual beings. This caused our ancient ancestors to practice a type of magic which used plants and often objects for rituals to make peace with evil and disease causing spirits ( Kremers, 3). The ancient people learned many things from instinct. Things like water, an herb or mud were most likely man s first soothing applications. Trial and error helped man learn which substances brought the best results and shared them with other people. The advanced profession of pharmacy most likely evolved from simple and crude methods used by our ancient ancestors (A History 1).
