If two poems about prayer are laid side by side, logic and statistics would state that the two poems
should be somewhat alike in content. Prayer is supposed to be a universally mutual sensation among
all people of the world. Prayer is also normally seen in a good light with a positive reputation. Prayer
known to be a helpful tool to seek aid from or send thanks to the deity of the devotee s choice. Openly
criticizing prayer in writing or verse is not a common phenomenon. George Herbert and Gerard
Manley Hopkins took the matter into their own hands and broke from the crowd. Both poets expressed
extreme opinions and recorded their experiences and thoughts of prayer. Though both poems share the
same base topic, their content and opinion varies.
One undeniable characteristic both poems share is that the poets are obviously giving commentary on
prayer and God himself. The major difference between these two poems lies in their feelings on their
selected subject matter. Herbert s poem makes him sound hurt by God. He states O that thou schouldst
give dust a tongue / to crie to thee, / And then note heare it crying! all day long / My heart was in my
knee, / But no hearing. (16 20). Herbert is arguing to God that he gave humans tongues with which to
pray and cry out to him, though he does not respond. He mentions his knees, too. Knees are typically

evolved throughout the years and with that evolution, the people have separated themselves by factors
