What is a Search Engine?
Every time you go to Google to look for something!
That specific activity of looking for something is
called search. When you type in something in
Google’s text area, what you’re actually doing is
asking Google’s search engine to retrieve the
information you just typed in – from their database
back out to you.
What Dose Search Engine Do?
When the Search Engine Spider goes out it does three main
functions: Index, retrieve and rank.
Crawling by the way is the term used when a search engine reads the
codes of a website. Always keep in mind that ALL websites are made
up of codes. What you see is only an end-product of those codes
when read by an HTML browser.
When you enter the words you’re looking for in Google.com ‘s text
area and you hit the enter button, what you just did is called a search
query. And what Google will do next is look up in its database for any
related keyword to your query and retrieve it for you to display in
its Search Engine Results Page (SERP).
What are Users looking for?
There are three types of search queries users generally perform:
- Transactional Queries - Action queries such as buy a plane ticket.
- Informational Queries - When a user seeks information, such as the
name of the band or the best restaurant in New York City.
- Navigation Queries - Search queries that seek a particular online
destination, such as yahoo.
What is SEM?
SEM stands for Search
Engine Marketing. It is
the process of gaining
traffic through visibility
on search engines using
PPC advertising!

What are the major factors in search
engine rankings?
First of the two major factors in search engine
rankings is On-Site Optimization. This is the
foundation of your website’s SEO and it
accounts for around 30% of your website’s SEO.
Without on-site optimization, Off-Site
optimization is futile. Off-Site Optimization
accounts for roughly 80% of your site’s SEO.
On-site SEO techniques include adjusting the layout
of your website, adding code on pages, HTML
scripts, inserting relevant keywords within the
content of your website ( Title Tags, Meta
Description Tags
Off-site SEO techniques include the process of "link
building" or getting links back to your site from
others.
On Site Factors
There are a lot of factors you can think of when it comes to on site optimization. I’ll
be chunking on site optimization to four major parts:
Navigation : Navigation deals with how users move in and out of your website.
Interlinking : Interlink your articles by looking for keywords and/or keyphrases and linking
it to another article within your webpage with relevant information/ value.
Design : Dealing with design has more to do with how artsy your website looks. You should be more
concerned on where you place your links, where you put certain keywords, where you type out certain
headers, etc… Design deals with where you put your links, your forms, your header,
or whether you use flash, CSS or if you are W3C compliant with your codes. There’s more to
design than meets the eye. Personally, I’d say focus more on user experience with your design.
Keep it simple, keep it clean. Make it fancy if your target audience are artists.
Content : Your content will establish your keywords, your relevancy, your reputation, your user-
friendliness, your human-ness. It is what makes your website human. And that’s what people look for – a
human connection.
Meta tags
- Title tag - This is the page or post title as it shows up in the top of
your browser in the search engine.
- <title>Title text here</title>
- Meta Description Tag -This is the paragraph below the title that is
used to draw readers in. The meta description tag is where you
would want to put your site’s summary
- <meta name=”description” content=”This is where you put your site’s
summary”/>
- Keyword meta tags – The meta keywords tag is where you put all of
the keywords you use in your site.
- <meta name=”keywords” content=”SEO, Search Engine, etc”/>
What do Google recommend?
- Create a useful, information-rich site, and write pages that
clearly and accurately describe your content.
- Make sure your <title> elements and ALT attributes are
descriptive and accurate.
- Use keywords to create descriptive, human friendly URLs.
- Make pages primarily for users, not for search engines.
- Produce fresh content regularly.

How to use Keywords effectively?
- Use the keyword in the title tag at least once.
- Try to keep the keyword as close to the beginning of the title tag as
Possible.
- At least 2-3 times, including variations, in the body copy on the page
- At least once in the alt attribute of an image on the page.
- Once in the URL.
- At least once in the meta description tag.
How to optimize your Site?
- Easy to use, navigate, and understand
- Provide direct, actionable information relevant to the query
- Professionally designed and accessible to modern browsers
- Deliver high quality, legitimate, credible content

- Title tag - This is the page or post title as it shows up in the top of your browser in the
search engine.
- Meta Description Tag -This is the paragraph below the title that is used to draw
readers in.
- Keyword meta tags – There are the words search teams you like your information to
show up for.
- Permalink – This is everything after the domain name that references the post of
page.
- Headings – The words used in the headings of your content
- Paragraphs – How often your keywords is used throughout the paragraph in your
post
- Links – The quality of sites linking to and from your site
What is Inbound links or Backlinks?
If you’re not an SEO practitioner, you have little
to no awareness as to how important a link is
in order for you to rank in Google’s search
engine. Google’s algorithm gives a big factor
to links pointing to your site. Links pointing to
your site are also called inbound links or
backlinks. Link building is simply the
process of getting links to your websites (or
what we call inbound links or backlinks) from
other websites.
What Types of Links?
Value is based on the source:
The value of links depends on the authority of the website that gives them to you. Is
the website authoritative? Is it trusted by a lot of people? Do they have lots of
visitors? Do they have high page rank/MozRank?
Link type:
Is it a nofollow link? Is the anchor text related to your website? Is where the link
placed somewhere visible? Is it going to be placed with a lot of other links (on a links
page)?

type in the URL – which is pretty crazy if you’re going to
keep doing it). In SEO, links hold the biggest weight
when it comes to ranking in the search engines. So it is

This is the foundation of your website’s SEO and it accounts for around 30% of your website’s SEO. Without on-site optimization, Off-Site optimization is futile. Off-Site Optimization accounts for roughly 80% of your site’s SEO.

Design : Dealing with design has more to do with how artsy your website looks. You should be more concerned on where you place your links, where you put certain keywords, where you type out certain headers, etc… Design deals with where you put your links, your forms, your header, or whether you use flash, CSS or if you are W3C compliant with your codes. There’s more to design than meets the eye. Personally, I’d say focus more on user experience with your design. Keep it simple, keep it clean. Make it fancy if your target audience are artists. Content : Your content will establish your keywords, your relevancy, your reputation, your user- friendliness, your human-ness. It is what makes your website human. And that’s what people look for – a human connection.
