This document identifies and describes several common measuring tools found in workshops, including their uses. It discusses steel rules for measuring distances, inside and outside calipers for internal and external dimensions, protractors for measuring angles, micrometers for precise internal and external measurements, and vernier calipers for a wide range of internal and external measurements.
3. •Steel rule: this is used for measuring the distance between two points. It can also
be used as a straight edge for checking purpose.
4. •Calipers: they are of two types; inside caliper and outside caliper.
Inside caliper is used to measure the inside dimension of a hole in an object. While outside
caliper is used to measure the outside dimension of a round bar or any object.
Note: never force the legs of the caliper over the work (outside) or inside the hole
(inside) to avoid distortion.

5. •Protractor: this is used for measuring angles in degrees. It can also be used for checking any
angle.
PROTRACTOR
6. Micrometer: they are of different types.
•Internal micrometer: it is used for measuring internal dimensions.
•External diameter: is used for measuring external dimensions.
•Depth gauge micrometer: it is designed for measuring the depth in holes, shoulders and
recesses.
7. •Vernier caliper: this is used for measuring both internal and external dimension over a wider
range than is possible with a micrometer.
