 What is computer mean?
 Basic computer components?
 Word processing
 Computer Networking
 A computer is an electronic device, operating
under the control of instructions (software)
stored in its own memory unit, that can accept
data (input), manipulate data (process), and
produce information (output) from the
processing.
 .
 We classify computer components
in to three:-
1. Hardware components
2. Software components and
3. Operating System
1. Hardware Components
 A computer hardware is a physical artifacts
of technology.
 It consists, the electronic devices that you
can see and touch.
 They include: input devices, output devices
and storage devices
 Input devices are devices that send data into
the computer systems.
 They include: keyboard, mouse, microphone
and etc.
 Output devices are devices which return
anything processed by the CPU.
 They include: monitors, speakers, printers
and etc.
 Storage devices are any computing hardware
that are used to hold and store information
both temporarily and permanently.
 They can be internal or external to
a computer.
 They include: memory, internal hard disk,
floppy disk and other removable disks like
flash disks, external HDs and CDs or DVDs
 Software is a set of instructions and its associated
documentations that tells a computer what to do.
 We classify it into two.
 System software: - System software is software designed
to provide a platform to other software. Example: -
Windows, Linux, UNIX, and etc.
 Application software: - An application is any program, or
group of programs, that is designed for the end users.
 Example: - web browsers, word processors, spreadsheets,
media players, image viewers and etc.
 Operating system is an intermediary tool
between computer’s software and hardware
which enables them to interact each other.
 It also enables end users to communicate
with their computer without knowing how to
speak its language.
 Example: - Windows, Linux, UNIX, and etc.
 The most common word processor is the
Microsoft office.
 Microsoft office includes:
- Notepad
- WordPad,
- Microsoft Word,
- Microsoft Excel
- Microsoft PowerPoint
- Microsoft Access
- Microsoft Publisher … etc.
 A computer network is a digital telecommunications
network which allows nodes to share resources.
 In computer networks, computing devices exchange
data with each other using connections (data-links)
between nodes.
 These data links are established over a cables’
media such as wires or optic cables, or wireless
media such as Wi-Fi.
 Internet is the internetwork connection via all
computers through which users can
communicate directly.
 Browsers are application software which we
interact with others via the internet through
the wire or wirelessly.
