Balance in nature occurs when there are interactions between organisms and the environment that maintain ecosystems at an optimal level. Key natural cycles that help maintain this balance include the nitrogen cycle, water cycle, and carbon cycle. The carbon cycle involves carbon dioxide being used by plants for photosynthesis and later released by animals through respiration, burning, and decomposition. The water cycle involves water being used by plants and animals and later released back into the atmosphere through transpiration and respiration. A food chain shows the relationship of energy transfer from producers to consumers.
