was founded with sustainability in mind.
When the Spanish government challenged
people to reduce the overabundance of
molasses in Cuba more than 150 years ago,
the Bacardi family used it to make BACARDÍ
rum. Their strategy of employing old whiskey
barrels to age the rum remains in practice
today, and the company is now shifting to
a more environmentally friendly approach
in other areas of production and
packaging.

3.  In early 2014, the company announced that it
would get 40 percent of its products that are
derived from sugarcane through certified
sustainable practices within three years. The
company is also focusing its efforts on global
packaging and operational efficiency. Recent
initiatives include the addition of wind power to
its rum distillery in Puerto Rico and hydropower
to a MARTINI vermouth production facility in
Italy. All of Bacardi’s plants have been certified
by Occupational Safety and Health Advisory
Services and the International Organization for
Standardization.
