Introduction:

Automatic doors are the doors which open by itself when any object come close
to specific area opposite the doors. In this case, no need to open the door
manually with a bar or door handling. Some automatic doors are work by using a
button that makes the door open. Doors like that are very important and it used
in many places such as shopping malls, hospitals, universities, schools, industrial
places, tracks. These days, there is no building that doesn’t have automatic doors.
There are many designs for automatic doors such as slide open. Another one is
consisting of panels that fold when people come approach to the door. Other
type is one which swings in or out. The automatic door surely has a control
system that control when to open or close the doors. The control systems have
sensors which act when object come close and it can be adjusted by the
customers need. If a button is provided for automatic doors, it should be in low
level so it can be convenient for disable people. Another factor of automatic
doors are electricity for the operation. Electricity will run the motor which open
up the door. That doesn’t mean the door will be only opened by electricity. In
fact, if the door fails to work due to electrical or mechanical issues, there is
another manual method to open the door for safety reasons. There are also
sensors that make the door stay open that’s when any object stands between the
two doors so number of accidents will be reduced. This kind of safety ideas will
ensure safe operation of automatic doors.
Types of automatic door system

Twin glider door

                                                             Figure 1

Twin glider doors are type of bus door systems. This kind of door system for bus is
suitable for city-bus entrance and exit doorways. The door has big area of glass
that let you have a nice appearance and also it shows for the driver the ultimate
sideway vision as you can see in figure 1. The door leaves will be carried on steel
shaft. Door leaves are also located at the bottom by bearings bolted to the step. It
also suspended from the overhead mechanism.
Folding Door

Figure 3

Another type of door system is folding door. This kind of system is convenient for
entrance of the doors up to 950 mm wide. Folding
doors are joined solidly and this kind of system is
economical. Also folding door is a type of automatic
doors that works by folding back in certain number of
sections. Folding doors are discovered by
                                                                Figure 4
Roman. Another name of folding door is
accordion door or accordion partitions.

Electric Folding Door Mechanism

The cylinder will be used as a driving mechanism to open/close the folding door
as you can see in figure 4. The advantages of this system that it has a compact
structure perfect performance and long service life, as well as with additional
safety protection of against being clamped.

Glider door

                                                            Figure 5
Figure 6

Glider door is an automatic door that designed for small buses. It is suitable for
apertures up to 750mm wide, but with a heavier shaft and larger actuator it can
be used for aperture widths up to one meter. It can be shaped to fit flush with a
profiled body-side, and has the advantage over a pivot door in that it does not
sweep forward as it opens and so can be located closer to the front of the bus
without conflict with the windscreen or front rim.
Sliding plug door

Figure 7

Another type of automatic door system that is designed for low floor bus. It
consists of both electrical system and mechanical system. Sliding plug door
includes door operator, door shaft and door panels. The door operator consists of
driving mechanism, plugging mechanism, hanging mechanism, guiding
mechanism, and locking & unlocking mechanism.
Swing plug door

It’s type of automatic door system. It has a remotely powered auxiliary lock
mechanism, door striker, catch and manual release system for use on light to
medium duty shuttle or utility vehicles. It’s include a door operator and base plate
assembly, a shaft and arm assembly.
Comparison

After knowing the operations and specification of the five types of automatic door
systems for the bus. Twin glider door advantages are maintenance is free, very
heavy duty and double glide handle guidance. Folding door also has advantages
such as easy installing, locked from both sides and space saver. Disadvantages of
folding door are scratching occurs on mirror surface of the folding doors, Bi-
folding steel doors are very sensitive to harsh cleaners and use of ammonia based
acid or alkali cleaners on folding mirror doors is very harmful. All in all, I prefer the
twin glider door because the door moves in short distance which makes it fast to
operate with less time.
