SCHOOL NEWSLETTER
Principal: Mrs. Judy Gardner Deputy: Ms. Jennifer Oversby

No: 3/2016 April 8, 2016
Our purpose is to ensure that our students develop the understandings, skills and attitudes relevant to their individual needs,
in order that they fulfil their potential and ultimately contribute to the development of our society.
Ours goals are to:
Provide an encouraging, secure, caring and an aesthetically pleasing environment;
Recognise and develop the individuality and worth of each member of the school community to enhance positive
self-esteem and outcomes;
Provide an individualised and appropriate education program for every student;
Involve parents and members of the community as educational partners in the decision-making process.
From the Principal’s Desk
Ten weeks have flown by and suddenly it is time to wish everyone happy holidays. I will
be on Long Service during Term 1 Week 1 as will Ms Oversby, Deputy. Mrs Claire
Hegarty has been asked to „be-in-charge‟ and I know she will do a great job!
We have had a great Term 1 with fabulous excursions (Transperth has been a winning
provider), exciting science experiments and delicious food cooked by classes, the
Canteen work enclave and the Kensington Kafe gang. Horticulture is looking great
with the summer leftovers cleared out and new plantings in place. The bush behind the
school is looking sparse and still smells, but we all survived this term‟s emergency
evacuation and bushfire!
I have raised the issue of when students leave class for recess and to go home, as well
as what time the students arrive in the morning with the staff. I would appreciate
having the support of parents/carers. My goal is not to be hard-to-live with; rather, I
would like to maximize available time for learning!
I would ask that students not arrive before 8:15 am in the morning as all staff have other
jobs/responsibilities to address before school starts at 8:30 am. The school wants to
support all families but at the same time is not a child care facility. I also would
appreciate it if all parents would wait outside for their students to enter/exit in the
morning and afternoon. The students are now in high school and I believe we should
treat them accordingly. If all students arrive and leave at the correct times, there will
be plenty of staff around to ensure they get where they are meant to be. Many thanks!
We have much to look forward to in Term 2; students who have finished a module or an
award will have their ASDAN portfolios moderated. We will continue our links with
Rowethorpe; some Clontarf students will be joining us once a week in Term 2 to play
sport. Term 2 also will bring the Sensorium Theatre for staff learning and student
enjoyment!
Finally, please remember NO SCHOOL MONDAY APRIL 25 – it is ANZAC Day and a
public holiday. Term 2 starts for everyone on Tuesday, April 26th.
Judy Gardner, Principal
2. Room 3…
What an incredibly busy and fun Term 1 we have had. Some of the learning adventures we
have embarked on this term are planning, organising and running Kensington Kafe, organising
fundraisers, attending the RAC B Street Smart excursion, buddy/peer interaction with Room 10,
shopping and catching public transport.
Sadly Jada has not been able to attend school at all this term, so some of our outings have
been to Princess Margaret Hospital to visit her. The students have been writing letters to Jada
and on one occasion, Serey read every letter to Jada (on his own) while he was there visiting
her. She listened intently. We miss her dearly and hope she can return to school soon.
Miss Johns and the Room 3 team
3. Room 4
Room 4 went on an excursion to explore
TransPerth services and Elizabeth Quay.
We started the day with a ferry ride to the
city where we met our tour guide for the
day. He showed us around Elizabeth
Quay and both Perth stations. We used
the ferry, a bus and a train all in one day!
Everyone was on-track!
Well done everyone!
Ms Oversby and the
Room 4 crew
4. In Room 5 students like to move and learn. They played
a maths game called speed maths Tic Tac Toe.
Students also played „compliment tag‟. If you give the
person that is “It” a compliment before they tag you,
then you are safe!
Room 5 is alive with cooking!
We have made pumpkin
pie, pizza, burgers, chicken
strips, sweet and sour
chicken and even pink
rabbit cupcakes for Easter!
Every day the Room 5
crew start the morning with
some energetic Brain Gym
to get minds ready for
learning.
We love visiting
our reading
friends at
Rowethorpe
Retirement
Village.
In science students grew seeds
without water! The
condensation from the
„sweating‟ bottles helped the
seeds grow. Those that also had
sun were able to sprout and
those on the non-sunny side of
the window did not sprout.

Crew
5. The students in Room 6 have been working hard. They are also enjoying expressing themselves through
their art and have completed some colourful crazy critters that have impressed us all! The Eric Carle
(Hungry Caterpillar) style works of art are on display in the classroom.
Recently the class attended an excursion run by Transperth; the class experienced travelling on a ferry,
a bus and a train. We also got to enjoy the new Elizabeth Quay where we stopped to have lunch.
We hope everyone has lots of fun doing exciting things over the break and we look forward to seeing
you next term, from Mrs Burnell, Miss Coulson, Miss Day and Miss Newton

6. Room 8
Science in Room 8 with Jesi is always a lot of fun! A
watermelon, vinegar and carb soda combined with two crazy
Education Assistants produced a colourful exploding volcano!
Jesi loved eating the middle but was not too sure about the
volcano!
Each morning, Jesi
starts the day with a
few minutes on the
swings. Jesi and her
Education Assistants
are all wearing
personalised shirts
with their names.
And of course in the
month of March we
had a special visitor to
the school! Jesi
prepared a beautiful
cake for the occasion.
This was followed by
an egg hunt in the
garden.
A few special visitors have joined Jesi in Room 8 this term! Jesi
has had a lot of fun learning and interacting. She enjoys Girls’
Club each Thursday and the membership seems to be getting
bigger each week! Kanushka gave Jesi a High-5 during club
time!

7. Room 10
Room 10 have made an excellent start to the new school year. They have created good friendships and have
settled in well with their new classroom routines and staff. The students have been busy doing a variety of
activities across the curriculum. Each Friday Room 3 is helping us with work, puzzles and games. Thank you
Room 3.
Maths
Students have done counting activities and revised numbers by completing number games.
English
Students had fun writing their names using colour pencils, magnetic letters, the whiteboard, Velcro and sand.
Science
Students have learned about the seasons and weather. They have worked very hard and had a great time
making a poster including trees and animals. Students presented their learning journey in the Room 10
assembly today.
St John’s First Aid incursion
Earlier in the term Room 10 enjoyed an incursion with St Johns. Students learned about First Aid and
emergency response. Stephen was happy to learn about the importance of phoning 000 in an emergency.
We are looking forward to the end of the term and wish you all a fantastic holiday.
Mrs Jakszuk and the Room 10 Team
8. ROOM 11
Have a safe and happy holiday break.
From the Room 11 team
Ice Painting
Students created
bright and colourful
paintings from frozen
blocks of paint. We
learned about Finland
and saw that there is
a lot of ice and snow
in this country so we
paid a tribute to the
ice.
Kandinsky Art
We learned about Russia
and discovered an artist,
Wassily Kandinsky, who
used a lot of shapes to
create art works. This is
our tribute to his art
works.
Room 11 students
have been creating
art works that
represent in a
creative way the
countries learned
about that week in
social studies.
9. Room 12 News
Room 12 have had a very busy term and are looking forward to the holidays! We
present the first assembly for 2016 and the students were brilliant as they starred in
the play “Count On Me.” We have been looking at mini-beasts and had close
encounters with a bug and praying mantis! The students enjoy swimming and
creating biscuits as a gift to their parents for Easter. We wish everyone a restful break
and look forward to more bug hunting in Term 2.
Patti Makins, Claire Hegarty and Room 12 staff
10. WORKPLACE LEARNING
The WPL Team have been very impressed with the work the students have been doing
this term. They have been working hard, doing jobs that require a lot of concentration.
They are conscious of the need to take care of their own safety when using machinery,
of what safety gear they need to wear and when and also keeping their work areas
clean and tidy. All of this is in line with Unit 1 of the ASDAN Award Workright.
Daniel, Mitheran and Serey all keep their work areas clean and tidy!
Tyler and Kristy are wearing the appropriate PPE and have been trained to use machinery safely!
Mrs Booth and Ms Marcondes, the WPL Team
11. Whether on their backs or stomachs or even standing up, all students have worked
hard in the pool this term. Well done! Miss C Naera, Swimming Teacher
12. HORTICULTURE
The cooler weather of late has seen many plants growing
well with pumpkin, climbing beans and apples to eat.
And the cooler weather has made it more inviting for
working outdoors!!
Mr Lundy, Horticulture Teacher
13. On Saturday March 19th the Kensington P&C ran its annual Car Boot Sale. The rain held off, the
air was filled with delicious smells, faces were painted and the collection tins rattled. The P&C
raised $2300+ which we think is great for a small school! We had many donations from a wide
range of businesses-which are list on the next page-and we hope all the Kensington community
will support them in the future.
14. Our sincerest thanks go to these businesses; please support them in the future!

15. Healthy food children will love!
Here are some ideas from the Health Department. We thought that some families
like to cook together in the school holidays and it‟s good to have some simple
ideas.
Blend fruit with milk and a spoonful of low fat yoghurt to make a smoothie
Freeze fruit (such as grapes, pear or banana)
Top toast with ricotta cheese, banana slices and cinnamon
Cut vegies into bite-sized pieces
Mix chopped tomato and green capsicum with baked beans. Put the mixture on
toast, or in a baked potato, and sprinkle with low-fat cheese
Add cooked vegetables to lightly beaten eggs. Melt some polyunsaturated
margarine in a pan and cook the mixture gently over low heat until eggs are
firm.
These are some ideas from the Health Department. We thought with school holidays
coming up that some families like to do some cooking together and it‟s good to
have some simple ideas.
Remember to use a cool bag or put a bottle of frozen water in the lunch box to keep
food cool at school. Keep lunches interesting by including salads, wraps and dips with
cut up vegies. Go to www.nhmrc.gov.au for more healthy food ideas.
Have a safe and happy holiday Nurse Sue and Nurse Kerri

RECYCLING ALUMINIUM CANS
Students wash, pull the ring pulls off (for a charity that makes artificial limbs from the
metal), crush and put the cans in the large recycling bin. This program allows students
to practise following a number of consecutive steps to complete a task and to
contribute to the care of our environment.
Please save all your cans and send them in on the bus!
Large and small amounts are gratefully received!
!! REMEMBER!!
If you have a concern about
any aspect of your child‟s
