Task 2: Initial Responses
Initial Responses and Idea Generation
Log your initial thoughts regarding the set brief in this document
What stories could you use? How do you feel about the different potential
formats? What are the positives about this project? What could be some difficult
aspects? Etc
Use the format on this document to guide this response – some are set as a
question on one slide, but you should look to add further slides as necessary
Which stories have you researched and looked
as potential starting points?
• The legend of Bloody Mary
• Jack The Ripper
• The Yorkshire ripper
• The legend of Baba Yaga
Which research into existing products has been the
most useful? Includes examples and explanations
• I have research several podcasts/ video essays related to true crime/
paranormal events. Most of them I've been familiar with, e.g. Hollywood
Crime Scene, a podcast that covers crime cases related to the world of
celebrities, or a YouTube channel called Eleanor Neale, where each week a
different case of true crime from all around the world is being covered by a
female host. An episode of Buzzfeed Unsolved where the hosts explore the
story of the demonic Goatman's bridge was a particular piece of my
research that inspired my later work to be focused on paranormal stories
rather than truecrime.
Which production format [drama, narration,
etc] do you feel fits your idea best and why?
At the moment, I feel like Narration would be the best format to
choose for my production. In opposition to drama format, narration
could be recorded fully with only one person. It does not really require
the narrator to have much acting abilities.
That does not mean, of course, that I will not try and include elements
of drama to my final project. Depending on whether I will manage to
involve actors to record some lines, I feel comfortable saying that
switching between both formats and merging them into one would be
my desirable outcome.
Which story have you settled on and why?
• I have decided to cover the story of Wendigo, a Canadian flesh-eating demon.
After researching for a specific legend to read out for my project, I have found a
perfect one both theme and length wise.
The original thought was to create a more of an informative script, briefly
exploring and explaining the mythological creature and beliefs surrounding it.
However, after finding an actual scary story about Wendigo, I figured it will suit
the horror genre more and could be transformed into more of a drama like
project.
The idea for the subject of my work itself, the Wendigo creature, originated from
my own personal interests as I enjoy exploring different mythologies and aspects
of them in modern pop culture. I knew of Wendigo and thought it might be just
the chilling story I need for the horror themed project.
If you had to sell your story quickly, what is the
title and the logline?
Wendigo- The Fleasheater of the Canadian Forests
two men, thirsty for money, set out to hunt in the depths of Canadian
wilderness, where, in the cold and darkness of the forest, an ancient
evil awaits.
What ideas have you had for sound effects,
narration and storytelling?
• I was mainly focusing on what sort of music I could use in my project in
order to make it more lively (as well as try to distract the listener from
focusing on my narration too much). I have considered creating a
background music for my product in garageband, I have also thought of
creating a simple composition on a piano.
• Apart from the music, I thought of sound effect I could create myself using
folie. So far, after reading my script, I have decided to include a fire noise,
perhaps the sound of a foot stomping on the ground or a noise of a tent
being open. However I don't really want to include too many sound effects
of that sort, as I would rather enrich my narration with music.
Initial feelings…how do you feel about the
project currently?
Overall, I'm excited for the project. I enjoy the amount of freedom I've been
given with the subject of my work. I think that a horror genre will be fun to
explore from an audio only perspective.
I'm a little worried when it comes to the narration aspect of my product,
although I have decided to record the narration myself, mainly out of
accessibility reasons, I am a little anxious about performing using only my
voice. The reason being my accent and the fact that English is my second
language.
What other research do you think you need to
do?
Now that I know that the focus of my project will be drama-like story about
paranormal happenings, rather than purely education focused true crime
cases. I should also start thinking of potential actors that might appear in my
audio project and if there is a way for me to organise all the planned folie
sounds to be made and featured in my product.

Audio task 2 2021

  • 1. Audio Story Task 2: Initial Responses
  • 2. Initial Responses and Idea Generation Log your initial thoughts regarding the set brief in this document What stories could you use? How do you feel about the different potential formats? What are the positives about this project? What could be some difficult aspects? Etc Use the format on this document to guide this response – some are set as a question on one slide, but you should look to add further slides as necessary
  • 3. Which stories have you researched and looked as potential starting points? • The legend of Bloody Mary • Jack The Ripper • The Yorkshire ripper • The legend of Baba Yaga
  • 4. Which research into existing products has been the most useful? Includes examples and explanations • I have research several podcasts/ video essays related to true crime/ paranormal events. Most of them I've been familiar with, e.g. Hollywood Crime Scene, a podcast that covers crime cases related to the world of celebrities, or a YouTube channel called Eleanor Neale, where each week a different case of true crime from all around the world is being covered by a female host. An episode of Buzzfeed Unsolved where the hosts explore the story of the demonic Goatman's bridge was a particular piece of my research that inspired my later work to be focused on paranormal stories rather than truecrime.
  • 5. Which production format [drama, narration, etc] do you feel fits your idea best and why? At the moment, I feel like Narration would be the best format to choose for my production. In opposition to drama format, narration could be recorded fully with only one person. It does not really require the narrator to have much acting abilities. That does not mean, of course, that I will not try and include elements of drama to my final project. Depending on whether I will manage to involve actors to record some lines, I feel comfortable saying that switching between both formats and merging them into one would be my desirable outcome.
  • 6. Which story have you settled on and why? • I have decided to cover the story of Wendigo, a Canadian flesh-eating demon. After researching for a specific legend to read out for my project, I have found a perfect one both theme and length wise. The original thought was to create a more of an informative script, briefly exploring and explaining the mythological creature and beliefs surrounding it. However, after finding an actual scary story about Wendigo, I figured it will suit the horror genre more and could be transformed into more of a drama like project. The idea for the subject of my work itself, the Wendigo creature, originated from my own personal interests as I enjoy exploring different mythologies and aspects of them in modern pop culture. I knew of Wendigo and thought it might be just the chilling story I need for the horror themed project.
  • 7. If you had to sell your story quickly, what is the title and the logline? Wendigo- The Fleasheater of the Canadian Forests two men, thirsty for money, set out to hunt in the depths of Canadian wilderness, where, in the cold and darkness of the forest, an ancient evil awaits.
  • 8. What ideas have you had for sound effects, narration and storytelling? • I was mainly focusing on what sort of music I could use in my project in order to make it more lively (as well as try to distract the listener from focusing on my narration too much). I have considered creating a background music for my product in garageband, I have also thought of creating a simple composition on a piano. • Apart from the music, I thought of sound effect I could create myself using folie. So far, after reading my script, I have decided to include a fire noise, perhaps the sound of a foot stomping on the ground or a noise of a tent being open. However I don't really want to include too many sound effects of that sort, as I would rather enrich my narration with music.
  • 9. Initial feelings…how do you feel about the project currently? Overall, I'm excited for the project. I enjoy the amount of freedom I've been given with the subject of my work. I think that a horror genre will be fun to explore from an audio only perspective. I'm a little worried when it comes to the narration aspect of my product, although I have decided to record the narration myself, mainly out of accessibility reasons, I am a little anxious about performing using only my voice. The reason being my accent and the fact that English is my second language.
  • 10. What other research do you think you need to do? Now that I know that the focus of my project will be drama-like story about paranormal happenings, rather than purely education focused true crime cases. I should also start thinking of potential actors that might appear in my audio project and if there is a way for me to organise all the planned folie sounds to be made and featured in my product.

Editor's Notes

  1. Think about creative and technical elements, it could be you like the idea of evoking a sense of place or you have the perfect person in mind as a narrator? Or are you keen to start writing a story and take it from there? Ideas and development are personal, try and get across where your idea is and what has got you to that point.
  2. Add as many slides as needed from the work you did on Urban Legends, York Ghost stories and other inspirations you have considered. Which story have you gravitated toward and why?
  3. Think about why this idea rather than any other…is it because it has the best scope for sfx, narration, etc. Reasons can be personal, but you need explain them.
  4. A logline is a one sentence description or summary of the audio story. Loglines distill the important elements of your script/story—main character, setup, central conflict, antagonist—into a clear, concise teaser. The goal is to write a logline so enticing that it hooks the listener into your idea
  5. Think about creative and technical elements here, it could be you like the idea of evoking a sense of place or you have the perfect person in mind as a narrator? Or are you keen to start writing a story and take it from there? Ideas and development are personal, try and get across where your idea is and what has got you to that point.
  6. Consider pros and cons here, what are you excited about, what is a worry…
  7. This could be audio recording, post-production, getting cast/narrator, etc…it might be just organising your idea into a workable project…
