AUDIENCE – USES AND GRATIFICATIONS 
• Information – Magazines act as a source of information for their audience. This is the case for every magazine no matter if its music or film or fishing 
weekly. However, each magazine will have specific information tailored to the wants and needs of their audience. For music magazines, this will be 
information on new music, music events, artists, albums and occasionally music artist gossip. They give key information about previous, current and 
upcoming events in the industry such as festivals, concerts or music awards. This information allows the readers of the magazine to feel involved and 
informed on the new music information which may be a reason why they read music magazines. This satisfies the readers interest and curiosity 
about the music industry through reading the articles and reviews within the magazines. 
• Personal Identity – This allows audiences to be able to read a magazine and identify with the content within that magazine, whether it be an artist 
article or a review of a concert/album. This is crucial in selling the magazine to an audience as if the audience can empathise and gain personal 
identity through reading a magazine it will incline them to buy it and read it in order to gain self gratification and empathy. Another form of personal 
identity is when the reader gauges with artists in magazines as role models and aspires to identify and, in turn, be like them. This enables a magazine 
to sell as there are members of their audience who will aspire to dress/look/be like the artists within the magazine. 
• Integration and Social Interaction – This allows audiences of these magazines to connect with other members of the audience to discuss and share 
opinions/views on what they’ve seen in the magazine. This could also be seen as spreading the magazines name through word of mouth and this will 
not only enable integration and social interaction through reading a magazine, but will also aid in selling the magazine through word of mouth. For 
example, if there is a group of teen girls and one of the girls reads the magazine then discusses it with her group, the rest of the group may find 
interest in the topics discussed and will be curious to find out more – so in turn will buy the magazine to be like their friends and connect with them 
on that level. 
• Entertainment – This is integral for magazine selling. This is due to magazines being a form of entertainment and release for people living possibly 
hectic and stressful lives. Reading magazines would provide entertainment for their audiences as well as an escape from everyday life. Some 
entertainment for magazines can be found through specific content, e.g. some people may read magazines for a sense of sexual gratification and this 
ties in with Laura Mulvey's theory of the male gaze (how the camera always sexualises women, in the simplest sense). This doesn’t have to be 
explicitly ‘lad mags’ such as nuts, it can also be from raunchy and racy photo-shoots in music magazines such as Q. People can also read magazines 
for entertainment purposes in regard to gauging tips and advice on fashion, life and music and this will entertain people if it is a passion of theirs.
