Planning for Music
Video: Investigating
Audience Part Two
(Results)
BY VANESSA MASELINO
 Amongst the countless immature

replies I received in answer to my
question, there were a few posts that
provided me with some feedback
about what our core and wider
audience look for when watching a
Dubstep music video. However, some
immature posts did also provide me
with an insight into our audiences.
E.g. 1
Explanation:
 This audience member was clearly distressed at the idea of

someone gaining information about Dubstep. This is because
rather than a 17 year old media student conducting coursework,
he thought I was a corporate official of a large music company
trying to collect information on how to make Dubstep more
mainstream. In reality, Dubstep is a genre of music that,
although still quite new to the mainstream market, has no
doubt become mainstream and is used by many famous music
artists with a large following to add a new sound to their songs.
This then leads people to listen to Dubstep songs and other
forms of the genre that are still quite underground. However, I
have included this reply in my results because it gave me the
insight that "hardcore" Dubstep fans still like to maintain that
Dubstep is a relatively undiscovered genre and reject
mainstream Dubstep. Therefore, by not having the
conventional clubbing scene that most people look for in a
Dubstep music video, our video will still be appealing to many
members of our core and wider audience, because it will ensure
that it is not categorised as much as "commercial Dubstep".
E.g. 2

This answer gave me a lot of feedback. This person
talks of a simple nature clip being made into a Dubstep
video. This is interesting because it shows that the
audience look for simplicity and originality when
watching a Dubstep video. It also shows that the editing
is the most important part, as it makes the simplicity of
the shots interesting.
E.g. 3

This answer agrees with the previous, in saying that a Dubstep video should be
original and creative, as well as interesting. The fact that the person uses the word
“bare,” which is a slang word, suggests that this may be a young person, and thus
perhaps this is feedback from someone in our core audience. Like many of the
answers I received, this talks about “Bro-step” which was a word I was unsure of,
so I goggled it to see if it had any connection with my results and if it could
influence our planning.
Bro-step Definition

This is one of the clearer descriptions of Brostep that I could find. It explains
that the more aggressive, louder Dubstep with less emphasis on vocals is an
American take on Dubstep, a British genre. However, this American take is
hated by British Dubstep fans and is thought to lack substance.
How does this influence our
video?
 This influences our planning,

because it means that our ideas
of shying away from the
conventional club scenes and
shots takes our music video
away from Brostep and more
into the British Dubstep.
This Dubstep fan gave me an answer that was personal to him/her. This suggests
to me that much like Andrew Goodwin states, the audience member will usually
make their own connection and interpretation of the video and lyric. Therefore
with our video, by not having a complicated narrative, we leave it open for the
audience to draw their own conclusions of what the implicit and explicit meaning
is.
These answers suggest editing techniques
such as slow motion, as well as distorted
imagery, which we can either produce
through our shots or through the editing.
These answer’s refer to
quite urban imagery,
which one of the main
themes of our Music
Video. Therefore it
shows that many of our
ideas coincide with what
the core and wider
audience want to see.
CONCLUSION OF RESULTS
 In conclusion, my results show that many of

ideas are conventions of what our target and
wider audience expect to see in a Dubstep
video, however it has also influenced our
planning because it gives us more direction
for how to shoot certain scenes. For example,
we can film some scenes from many
different angles, but distort the images by
cutting between the different shots.
