James Slator conducted audience research on the adventure genre through focus groups and an online survey. The focus groups provided insight into what audiences like and dislike about adventure films, noting that character depth and story locations are strengths. Both methods revealed strengths and weaknesses of the genre. The survey of over 20 people provided information on demographics like age and gender that influenced Slator's trailer and helped target his intended audience. The feedback ensured his work appealed to what audiences want from adventure films.

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

2. Focus Groups
For my audience response research I strived to gain a more personal response from my chosen focus groups. By recording the
response on video it allows the respondent to give a more in-depth answer to questions revolving around the adventure genre
such as what are your likes and dislikes about the adventure genre, what are your favourite aspects. By asking these question I
gained a valuable insight, not only into the genre itself, but into what the audience is looking for within the genre i.e. the
strengths of the adventure genre according to the focus groups is the depth of character personality and the story locations.
From the responses I received, it seemed evident that the adventure genre contain both strengths and weaknesses. The
interviews allowed me to gain information on age ratings, at first I though about keeping the age rating at 18, with the age
demographic at 17-24 but to reach a larger audience base I decided to expand the age rating from 18 to 15 because I still want to
allow more adult themes within my trailer to make it more appealing to an older audience.
The question of strengths and weaknesses within the adventure genre was asked and the responders both replied with the
depth, backstory and personality of the main protagonist was the most predominant aspect of an adventure film. This allowed
me to focus my trailer, poster and magazine, not only on the locations and settings, but the on main character himself in order to
appeal to the audiences wants and needs.
From this audience response towards many aspects of the adventure genre, it has given me a better insight into the wants and
needs of the potential audience. Taking into account strengths and weaknesses of the adventure genre through others personal
opinion, it has enabled me to analyse those criticisms and strengths in order to improve my research and final products.
3. SurveyMonkey
With over 20 responses to my adventure genre survey via Survey Monkey, I was able to collect and analyse the data provided by
the respondents. With a majority of different answers to each asked question, which involved age, subgenres and film elements , I
was able to get a broader knowledge as to what the needs and wants of my potential audiences are. With this useful information
from the survey, I was able to adapt the production of my trailer, alter audience demographics and increase the depth of the genre
research to suit all the strengths and combat the weaknesses. For example, it seems that the biggest overall age group ranges
from 18-24, which doesn't mean that my film/trailer has to be rated 18, it simply means that from the results of the survey, that the
age group which is most likely to view an adventure film would be adults between the ages of 18-24.
The gender demographic, which overall could make a difference in the resulting content of my trailer, is mostly female. Official
statistics show that the higher percentage of cinema attendances are female which helps my research and understanding into the
potential attractions of the adventure genre.
The audience feedback I have gained from my survey has been crucial to all aspects of my research and production, not only for
my chosen genre. The survey results have benefited the overall outcome of my final products since it has allowed me to have a
broader understanding of my chosen genre ; Adventure.
