ASSURE Method
A. Analyze Learner
The class of first graders, which happen to be special ed. , consists of 10 boys and 7 girls.
While the class has a variety of ethnic groups, which is 70% white, 20% African
American, and 10% Hispanic. 7 students in the class have mild to severe ADHD
(attention deficit hyperactivity disorder).
S. State Objectives
While I will be teaching the first grade class the months of the year, we will start by using
the calendar, posters, and a recording of a song, which should keep the students attention.
With the students listening and or signing along to the song, they will be learning the
months of the year, and after they have learned the song the music will be taken away and
they will then be asked to sing the song in a group for the class. The group presentation
of the song will be how I will determine the students’ progress on learning the months of
the year. After several days of them singing the song, I will want to see a 95% accuracy
and if not, we will continue to sing the song on a regular basis, but not with as much
emphasis.
S. Select Methods, Media, and Materials
The methods that are going to be utilized in this lesson includes; using auditory learning,
musical talent, and memorization. Each of these types of intelligence will play to some
strengths of the students in some way or another. Using the recording of the song, will
include using the student’s limited attention span while still getting the lesson across, the
song will be short and to the point.
U. Utilize Media and Materials
I will ask the students to sing along with the recording and hopefully they will learn the
months by singing, even if they don’t realize what they are doing. Many of the materials
needed for this type of lesson will already be in the classroom, such as a calendar,
posters, and either a computer or CD player. Using all of these everyday materials will
allow the students many options to keep their attention on while learning the months of
the year.

R. Require Learner Participation
When the children start to learn the song along with looking at the calendar, they will
start not only to see what they are singing, but also putting the connection to what they
names of the months are used for. We will do the same activity for several days and then
the music will be taken away, and then all that will be left would be the students singing
the song, which will help any students struggling possibly learn from the other students
as they are singing.
E. Evaluate and Revise
After the several days of singing and learning the song, I will ask the students in small
groups to sing the song to the class, in which time I will determine which students
actually know the material or not. If the students do not yet fully know the months of the
year, then I will continue to work with them until the end of the year. I will add any
revisions that I see necessary after the first time I have done the lesson.
