ICT Applied to English Teaching
Assignment 2: Educational Software – Authoring Tools
Unit Plan
Context:
The students are teenagers, 15 year-olds, with a pre-intermediate language level. The
structures in the texts to be worked with have already been presented, but the vocabulary is
new and very specific.
The articles belong to the book Nature and Environment published by Richmond Publishing in
1999. It belongs to a course called Tools, created for Educación Polimodal.
The articles are found in the second unit of this book, The Environment, and the fourth unit,
Animal Care, respectively. The two units are going to be worked on consecutively because both
are concerned with taking care of the environment and animals.
General Objectives:
• To trigger off discussions on controversial topics and reflect on the importance of taking
care of the environment. To reflect on the importance of cooperating and working
together to get over pollution and its consequences and of ways of solving the problem
of unrestricted hunting.
• To work on reading comprehension and presenting and practising the use of vocabulary
related to the topics the articles are about.
• To recycle previous language and knowledge of the topics.
• To incorporate the use of technology into the English class and practise the language in
a motivating way.
Procedures:
The students will work with unit two first and then with unit four, and they are going to be worked
on consecutively because both have to do with taking care of the environment and both
highlight the importance of taking care of animals. The students are going to read the article, do
the comprehension and practice activities on the book and finally carry out the tasks prepared
with the software Hot Potatoes as follow-up activities in groups of two or three students per
computer.
This work will take the students six classes, and the activities will be organised as follows:
Class 1: Reading of the article ‘Friends of the Earth’. Work on comprehension with the
activities in the unit and discussion.
Class 2: Practice of the new vocabulary with the activities in the unit and other games
prepared by the teacher to play in class.
Class 3: Follow-up activities developed with Hot Potatoes: Cloze, Match and MultipleChoice
Class 4: Reading of the article ‘Endangered Animals’. Work on comprehension with the
activities in the unit and discussion.
Class 5: Practice of the new vocabulary with the activities in the unit and other games
prepared by the teacher to play in class.
Class 6: Follow-up activities developed with Hot Potatoes: Mix and Crossword

Objectives:
1. MultipleChoice:
- To promote the development of reading comprehension skills and check
comprehension of the article in question through recognition of the correct
answer to the question.
2. Match:
- To promote the development of reading comprehension skills and check
comprehension of the article in question through the recognition of the correct
ending for each sentence.
- To apply knowledge of grammar rules to discover what endings could possibly
go with each beginning.
3. Cloze:
- To promote the development of reading comprehension skills and check
comprehension of the article in question through blank-filling.
- To use prior knowledge and reading skills for the interpretation of the hints
given and be able to complete the blank spaces.
4. Mix:
- To promote the development of reading comprehension skills and check
comprehension of the article through the formation of sentences that are related
to the content of the article that has been read.
- To put knowledge of language rules and vocabulary in use to form as many
sentences as possible, using the words given.
- In the last two Mix activities, the students will have to form questions that will
trigger off discussion: Why are animals in danger of extinction? and What can
you do to save animals in danger of extinction?
5. Crossword:
- To recycle the vocabulary in the article that has been read in an amusing way.
- To use prior knowledge and reading skills for the interpretation of the hints
given.

Assignment 2 educational software - plan

  • 1. ICT Applied to English Teaching Assignment 2: Educational Software – Authoring Tools Unit Plan Context: The students are teenagers, 15 year-olds, with a pre-intermediate language level. The structures in the texts to be worked with have already been presented, but the vocabulary is new and very specific. The articles belong to the book Nature and Environment published by Richmond Publishing in 1999. It belongs to a course called Tools, created for Educación Polimodal. The articles are found in the second unit of this book, The Environment, and the fourth unit, Animal Care, respectively. The two units are going to be worked on consecutively because both are concerned with taking care of the environment and animals. General Objectives: • To trigger off discussions on controversial topics and reflect on the importance of taking care of the environment. To reflect on the importance of cooperating and working together to get over pollution and its consequences and of ways of solving the problem of unrestricted hunting. • To work on reading comprehension and presenting and practising the use of vocabulary related to the topics the articles are about. • To recycle previous language and knowledge of the topics. • To incorporate the use of technology into the English class and practise the language in a motivating way. Procedures: The students will work with unit two first and then with unit four, and they are going to be worked on consecutively because both have to do with taking care of the environment and both highlight the importance of taking care of animals. The students are going to read the article, do the comprehension and practice activities on the book and finally carry out the tasks prepared with the software Hot Potatoes as follow-up activities in groups of two or three students per computer.
  • 2. This work will take the students six classes, and the activities will be organised as follows: Class 1: Reading of the article ‘Friends of the Earth’. Work on comprehension with the activities in the unit and discussion. Class 2: Practice of the new vocabulary with the activities in the unit and other games prepared by the teacher to play in class. Class 3: Follow-up activities developed with Hot Potatoes: Cloze, Match and MultipleChoice Class 4: Reading of the article ‘Endangered Animals’. Work on comprehension with the activities in the unit and discussion. Class 5: Practice of the new vocabulary with the activities in the unit and other games prepared by the teacher to play in class. Class 6: Follow-up activities developed with Hot Potatoes: Mix and Crossword The Articles:

MultipleChoice: - To promote the development of reading comprehension skills and check comprehension of the article in question through recognition of the correct answer to the question. 2. Match: - To promote the development of reading comprehension skills and check comprehension of the article in question through the recognition of the correct ending for each sentence. - To apply knowledge of grammar rules to discover what endings could possibly go with each beginning. 3. Cloze: - To promote the development of reading comprehension skills and check comprehension of the article in question through blank-filling. - To use prior knowledge and reading skills for the interpretation of the hints given and be able to complete the blank spaces. 4. Mix: - To promote the development of reading comprehension skills and check comprehension of the article through the formation of sentences that are related to the content of the article that has been read.
  • 6. - To put knowledge of language rules and vocabulary in use to form as many sentences as possible, using the words given. - In the last two Mix activities, the students will have to form questions that will trigger off discussion: Why are animals in danger of extinction? and What can you do to save animals in danger of extinction? 5.
