TECHNOLOGY AND COMMUNICATION
IN EDUCATION
Topic: - Meaning Objectives and Scope of
Educational Technology.
INTRODUCTION
Educational technology is an applied or Practical study which aims at
maximizing educational effects by “controlling” such relevant factors as
educational Purposes, educational content, teaching materials, educational
environment, conduct of students, behavior of instructors and interrelations
between students and instructions. It is a branch of study in which the result of
engineering techniques, information Science, natural Science, behavioral
Science and human technology are to be used to promote the efficiency of
education.
MEANING OF EDUCATIONAL TECHONOGY
Education Technology is system of 5 M’s. Educational technology is a
System in education in which machines, materials, media, men, and methods are
interrelated and work together for the fulfillment of specific educational
objectives. “Technology Explosion has yielded several new machines,
materials, and media which have great potential for use in the educational
enterprises. A Judicious use of these together with new functions and roles of
educational Personnel can bring about more efficient and effective teaching –
learning. An adequate knowledge of theory and practices of educational
technology and their proper use would enable the teacher to understand and
effectively discharge his new roles in the educational system in an age of
“information explosion” ‘Knowledge explosion’ ‘Population explosion, and
expectation explosion’
.OBJECTIVES OF EDUCATIONAL TECHNOLOGY
Macro Level Objectives
 Identification of educational needs and aspirations of the community
 Determination of the aims of education, broad strategies and structure of
education.
 Developing a suitable curriculum with interaction of art, human values
and sciences.
 Identification of man-material resources and strategies for achieving the
desired aims of education.
 Developing certain models leading to improvement in the process of
teaching – learning
 Assisting in extending vocational opportunities to masses especially
neglected sectors of society.
General Objectives
 Transmitting information
 Serving as role models
 Assisting the practice of Specific Skills and
 Contributing to the provision of feedback
Meckenzie and others describe the following four main objectives.
i) The need to reach more students
ii) To reach them with an improved range of learning materials.
iii) To offer greater Opportunities for independent study and
iv) To Permit at least a limited students response.
SCOPE OF EDUCATIONAL TECHNOLOGY
Scope of educational technology is as wide as education itself. Its scope
ranges from the concrete educational process to the most abstract and subtle
ones. It includes the use of hardware and software and system analysis in
various educational operations. These are three major areas in education in
which its scope is very wide. These are,
1. Technology related to general administration and management
2. Technology related to general educational testing
3. Technology related to the ‘instructional process.
Rowntra has stated the following as the province of educational technologist.
1. Identifying aims and Objective of learning
2. Planning the learning environment
3. Exploring and Structuring the subject matter
4. Selecting appropriate teaching strategies and learning media
5. Evaluating the effectiveness of the learning system
Important areas which should comprise educational technology are as under:-
1. Concept and various facets of educational technology
2. Teaching – learning process
3. Individualised instructional technology
4. Programmed learning
CONCLUSION
Technology of social process is the application of scientific and organized
knowledge to practical tasks by hierarchically ordered systems that involve men
and machines. So technology is not only the tool for the development of science
but also the ‘change in the social process’
In this technological era the evolution of terms like chemical technology,
leather technology, bio – technology etc. has affected the field of education to
give wide currency to the concept of educational technology.
