2. INTRODUCTION
Technology holds the key to development and growth in both Economic and
Educational. The application of technological principles, theories and aids in the
field of education is known as Educational technology. According to Bloomer
Educational Technology is the application of scientific knowledge about learning
to practical learning situation. Educational Technology is the study and ethical
practice of facilitating learning and improving performance by creating, using and
managing appropriate technological processes and resources. An adequate
knowledge of theory and practices of Educational Technology and their proper use
would enable the teacher to understand. Educational Technology has brought about
so many tremendous changes in the field of education.
MEANING OF EDUCATIONAL TECHNOLOGY
There are three views regarding the meaning of Educational
Technology.
The first view Educational Technology refers to application of technology
to instrumentation useful to the process of teaching. This is the view of Finn and
his colleagues.
The second view we may call Educational Technology 2 refers to the
application of scientific principles to instruction. This is the view of Skinner,
Gagne and others. Here psychological principles of learning are stressed.
The third view of Educational Technology as described by Davis and
Hartley incorporate both the first and second views through application of the
Systems Approach to education and training. According to this view education
should be considered a system in which men, machines, materials, methods and
media are interrelated parts and are organised in such a way as they work together
3. for the fulfilment of specific educational objectives. Educational Technology
according to this view implies planning, implementing and evaluating a system in
education according to scientific principles so as to best achieve the educational
objectives.
OBJECTIVES OF EDUCATIONAL TECHNOLOGY
Hillard Jason has stated the following major objectives of Educational
Technology keeping the teachers in view.
1) Transmitting information.
2) Serving as role models.
3) Assisting the practice of specific skills.
4) Contribution to the provision of feedback.
Mackenzie and others describe the following four main objectives of
educational technology.
1) The need to reach more students.
2) To reach them with an improved range of learning materials
3) To offer greater opportunities for independent study.
4) To permit atleast a limited student response.
MACRO LEVEL OBJECTIVES OF EDUCATIONAL TECHNOLOGY
(Objectives in terms of broad educational goals).
1) To identify the need and aspirations of the community.
2) To determine the aims, objectives and the general structure of
education.
3) To develop an integrated curriculum of arts, science and human
values.
4) To identify and locate material resources and strategies for
achieving the desired aims of education.
5) To develop scientific models of teaching to bring about an
improvement in the teaching learning process.
4. 6) To design, modify and develop appropriate equipment or aids
suitable and relevant to the educational process.
7) To identify the latent environmental constraints and means to
tackle them.
8) To assist in providing vocational opportunities to the needy and
deserving.
9) To manage the entire educational system consists of planning,
implementation and evaluation process.
MICRO LEVEL OBJECTIVES OF EDUCATIONAL TECHNOLOGY
(Objectives in terms of specific classroom teaching)
1) To identify the educational needs of the learner.
2) To access the characteristics of the students.
3) To determine and formulate classroom objectives in behavioural
terms.
4) To identify the necessary teaching learning material.
5) To identify the contents of instruction and organise them in a
proper sequence
6) To predetermine the nature and interaction between subsystems
that is students, teachers, teaching learning, material, content and
methodologies.
7) To identify human resources- students and teachers.
8) To plan out teaching strategies, models, methods as per the
needs and the objectives.
9) To evaluate the teaching strategy in terms of learning outcomes
that is behavioural changes in students.
10) To provide appropriate feedback to students as well as teachers.
11) To modify the teaching learning process on the basis of
feedback received.
SCOPE OF EDUCATIONAL TECHNOLOGY
5. Scope of educational technology is as wide as education itself. Its
scope ranges from the concrete educational process to the most abstract and subtle
ones.
There are three major areas in education in which its scope is very
wide .These are;
Technology related to general educational administration and
management.
Technology related to general education testing.
Technology related to the instructional process.
Rowntra (1973) has stated the following as the province of educational
technologists;
1) Identifying aims and objectives of learning.
2) Planning the learning environment.
3) Exploring and structuring the subject matter.
4) Selecting appropriate teaching strategies and learning media.
5) Evaluating the effectiveness of learning system.
6) Using the insights gained from evaluation to improve their
effectiveness for the future.
Important areas which should comprise educational technology are as under;
1) Concept and various facets of educational technology.
2) Teaching learning process.
3) Individualised instructional technology.
4) Programmed learning.
5) Teaching models.
6) Learning theories.
7) Multimedia approach to teaching.
8) Mathetics.
9) Cybernetics.
CONCLUSION
6. This is the age of technology. Technology can be used in a
judicious way. If you use technological aids in a class it will makes a class more
effective. Educational technology increases the output of the entire system of
education. It helps in optimising educational outcomes with cost effectiveness
through efficient use of available resources including men and materials.
