This chapter introduces three scenarios of assessing speaking to illustrate the variety of contexts and approaches. Scenario 1 describes a brief communicative language test with two examiners and examinees constructing a story from pictures and being asked questions. Scenario 2 depicts a large-scale standardized language proficiency test administered through headphones in a language lab. Scenario 3 presents an English language assessment embedded in a vocational college course, where students role-play a factory tour and presentation, and later self-assess and peer-assess their performance.
