Assertive Discipline is a classroom management model developed by Lee Canter that emphasizes teachers' rights to establish rules and procedures to create an optimal learning environment. According to Canter, teachers must insist that their needs are met through assertive behavior like stating expectations clearly, maintaining eye contact, and following through consistently with consequences. There are three response styles - assertive teachers communicate expectations calmly and back them up with actions; hostile teachers react abusively and personally; and nonassertive teachers plead inconsistently without enforcing demands. The assertive discipline model involves teachers creating a written discipline plan for approval, then teaching and enforcing it consistently.
