We work hard at building our blogs and growing our social media networks. Most of us strive to provide good content and engage with our readers. We might even earn some cash from time to time from our blogs and social media channels. Why? Because readers, brands and public relations companies understand that our words mean something. That people are listening to what we have to say.
Imagine what kind of change we can make in the world if we used our social media influence for social good. Not only do we empower our readers to become advocates for the causes they care for, we also feel good about giving back.
If you have a blog and/or are active in social media, you can use your influence to spread some good. It’s easier than you think. And, no, it doesn’t involve donating lots of time and money. In this webinar, hosted by Sverve, Jennifer Barbour, chief engagement officer of Another Jennifer Blog + Writing Lab, discussed:
• Why social good deserves space in your social media channels
• Choosing a cause to write about and support
• Way to promote social good on your blog / social media
• Getting your readers involved with social good
• Social good networks to join
• Measuring your impact

Search and Society: Reimagining Information Access for Radical FuturesBhaskar Mitra
The field of Information retrieval (IR) is currently undergoing a transformative shift, at least partly due to the emerging applications of generative AI to information access. In this talk, we will deliberate on the sociotechnical implications of generative AI for information access. We will argue that there is both a critical necessity and an exciting opportunity for the IR community to re-center our research agendas on societal needs while dismantling the artificial separation between the work on fairness, accountability, transparency, and ethics in IR and the rest of IR research. Instead of adopting a reactionary strategy of trying to mitigate potential social harms from emerging technologies, the community should aim to proactively set the research agenda for the kinds of systems we should build inspired by diverse explicitly stated sociotechnical imaginaries. The sociotechnical imaginaries that underpin the design and development of information access technologies needs to be explicitly articulated, and we need to develop theories of change in context of these diverse perspectives. Our guiding future imaginaries must be informed by other academic fields, such as democratic theory and critical theory, and should be co-developed with social science scholars, legal scholars, civil rights and social justice activists, and artists, among others.

Epistemic Interaction - tuning interfaces to provide information for AI supportAlan Dix
Paper presented at SYNERGY workshop at AVI 2024, Genoa, Italy. 3rd June 2024
https://alandix.com/academic/papers/synergy2024-epistemic/
As machine learning integrates deeper into human-computer interactions, the concept of epistemic interaction emerges, aiming to refine these interactions to enhance system adaptability. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.

Neuro-symbolic is not enough, we need neuro-*semantic*Frank van Harmelen
Neuro-symbolic (NeSy) AI is on the rise. However, simply machine learning on just any symbolic structure is not sufficient to really harvest the gains of NeSy. These will only be gained when the symbolic structures have an actual semantics. I give an operational definition of semantics as “predictable inference”.
All of this illustrated with link prediction over knowledge graphs, but the argument is general.

4. Social media is about people.
It’s about projecting a point at which you stand. A belief.
A hope. A new transparency.
5. Want to succeed in social media? Welcome to the “power of the crowd.”
(Or go with puppies. They work pretty well…)
6. 6 steps to expand your audience
1. Set your objectives
2. Choose your platforms
3. Talk to your audience
4. Monitor the conversation
5. The power of people
6. ROI
Talk to your audience
7. 1. Let’s start our social media strategy with a blank page.
9. 2. Choose your platforms
“Facebook is
about to top 1 “Hello Mum!”
billion people!”
“Your employees
should have a
linkedin page”
“Twitter has
over 200 million
users…”
There is a lot of social media out there – Where do you start?
10. Education & amplification = Twitter, facebook, email
Donations = Set up a paypal donation page and link to it!
Sales = Set up an online store (such as big cartel or shopify)
Campaign / Cause = Work on a change.org page
Chances are we will need all of these channels in some form
11. 3. Engage your supporters
Thank and respond to every post, tweet or message sent to you
Give them the happy stories as well as the sad ones
Ask questions of your audience
Respond to people both negative and positive
Never argue with people
Treat social media presence just like a cocktail parity or a rally
12. 4. Monitoring the conversation: Tweetdeck
1. Your own brand terms or
cause. Easy ones to respond
to and thank people for a
mention or share
2. @ replies – These are
messages aimed at you and so
they need a response
3. Key online influencers: A way
to gain followers
4. Search for volunteers and
opportunities to connect with
people
13. 5. Social media is the power of the people
Thank and respond to every post, tweet or message sent to you
Listen to the conversation and help guide the flow
Empower your audience
Give them easy tasks and wins
Update people as often as you can
Share positive news stories about your supporters
14. 6. ROI & social media: No cost to run this campaign as an NGO
This photo enabled the charity to buy the land and restore it
15. The fight is hard, but the battle can be won. And you will win.
16. And finally, beg, borrow or steal a really good photographer
Until Every Rescue Finds a Home.

You don’t have to run your social team to listen on social media. Tweetdec enables you to listen to the conversations around you. 20% o fthe people may be making 80% of the tweets but you can still listen to that conversation
- Its so critical to remember that social media is about people
The work by animals in photos is always free to charities but please remember this is “SOCIAL” media and images and video will massively increase your engagement.I’m ali bullock, its been a pleasure and an honour to speak to you today. And thank you for your time.
