The idea behind this booklet is essentially to cover a broad range of topics and ideas related to both GCSE Film Studies exams but in a way that is very much revision: this booklet works best when you already have studied the individual films and topics needed and just need to revise those key ideas in a practical manner.

Throughout you will see references to ’30 Days of Film Revision’: the original plan was to include 30 different tasks that could be completed one day at a time leading up to the day of the Component 1 exam. There are actually 31 activities in total now, in part because I added an extra day to relax, but also to include additional material that focuses on each exam in specific focus; these are the final “exam on a page’ resources you will find on pages 31 and 32.
When designing this booklet, I have done so with the methodology of recalling more generic, broad ideas at the beginning and then eventually becoming more focused and nuanced on specific films and possible exam questions. I also incorporated techniques related to spaced learning, interleaving and dual encoding and for this reason it may seem as though the tasks and ideas are being repeated or are revised once and then pop up again later on.
Finally, I find this booklet works best when printed and photocopied to A3 size allowing for more space to write, but it was designed and therefore works well, at A4 size, ideally as one complete booklet with a page completed each day.

Synergy in the Film Industry
Synergy refers to different elements of a media company working together to promote interlinked products. Disney is a good example, with its films promoting DVDs, soundtracks, toys and more. For Harry Potter, the film was promoted across various Warner Bros. owned channels and labels. Synergy is important for Hollywood blockbusters which are developed into multimedia franchises spanning films, games, books and theme park attractions to drive revenue from various streams.
Codes and Conventions of Horror/Thriller Films
Technical conventions like canted angles, long tracking shots, and POV shots are used to create confusion, tension, and show what characters see. Symbolic conventions employ colors like black and red or props like weapons to represent death, evil, danger, and violence. Characters typically include a main protagonist hero or victim, an antagonist villain like a monster or killer, careless teenagers often killed first, and creepy children or authority figures. Common themes involve good versus evil, revenge, the supernatural, religion, living dead, experiments gone wrong, insanity, nightmares, and lust.
French New Wave
The French New Wave was an influential film movement that emerged in France in the late 1950s. A group of young film critics-turned-directors rejected classical filmmaking styles in favor of personal expression, deep composition, long takes, and location shooting. They drew inspiration from American films and aimed to bring a sense of realism and flexibility to cinema. Some of the most influential French New Wave films included Breathless, The 400 Blows, and Jules and Jim. The movement had a significant impact on global filmmaking styles.
Features of a trailer
Trailers are designed to attract audiences to films in a limited amount of time. They showcase exciting clips and highlight stars while giving some information about the plot and genre through conventions like fast pacing, dramatic camera angles, and one-liners between characters. Different types of trailers exist for different purposes, like teaser trailers leaving audiences wanting more or theatrical trailers shown before films to target similar audiences. Trailers are viewed in various locations both in theaters and online on websites and social media.
Alevel media studies

It discusses genres like pop, rock, heavy metal, folk, acoustic, country, jazz and their characteristics. This document provides guidance on writing documentary treatments and pitches. The idea behind this booklet is essentially to cover a broad range of topics and ideas related to both GCSE Film Studies exams but in a way that is very much revision: this booklet works best when you already have studied the individual films and topics needed and just need to revise those key ideas in a practical manner.

Throughout you will see references to ’30 Days of Film Revision’: the original plan was to include 30 different tasks that could be completed one day at a time leading up to the day of the Component 1 exam. There are actually 31 activities in total now, in part because I added an extra day to relax, but also to include additional material that focuses on each exam in specific focus; these are the final “exam on a page’ resources you will find on pages 31 and 32.
When designing this booklet, I have done so with the methodology of recalling more generic, broad ideas at the beginning and then eventually becoming more focused and nuanced on specific films and possible exam questions. I also incorporated techniques related to spaced learning, interleaving and dual encoding and for this reason it may seem as though the tasks and ideas are being repeated or are revised once and then pop up again later on.
Finally, I find this booklet works best when printed and photocopied to A3 size allowing for more space to write, but it was designed and therefore works well, at A4 size, ideally as one complete booklet with a page completed each day.

Synergy in the Film Industry
Synergy refers to different elements of a media company working together to promote interlinked products. Disney is a good example, with its films promoting DVDs, soundtracks, toys and more. For Harry Potter, the film was promoted across various Warner Bros. owned channels and labels. Synergy is important for Hollywood blockbusters which are developed into multimedia franchises spanning films, games, books and theme park attractions to drive revenue from various streams.
Codes and Conventions of Horror/Thriller Films
Technical conventions like canted angles, long tracking shots, and POV shots are used to create confusion, tension, and show what characters see. Symbolic conventions employ colors like black and red or props like weapons to represent death, evil, danger, and violence. Characters typically include a main protagonist hero or victim, an antagonist villain like a monster or killer, careless teenagers often killed first, and creepy children or authority figures. Common themes involve good versus evil, revenge, the supernatural, religion, living dead, experiments gone wrong, insanity, nightmares, and lust.
French New Wave
The French New Wave was an influential film movement that emerged in France in the late 1950s. A group of young film critics-turned-directors rejected classical filmmaking styles in favor of personal expression, deep composition, long takes, and location shooting. They drew inspiration from American films and aimed to bring a sense of realism and flexibility to cinema. Some of the most influential French New Wave films included Breathless, The 400 Blows, and Jules and Jim. The movement had a significant impact on global filmmaking styles.
Features of a trailer
Trailers are designed to attract audiences to films in a limited amount of time. They showcase exciting clips and highlight stars while giving some information about the plot and genre through conventions like fast pacing, dramatic camera angles, and one-liners between characters. Different types of trailers exist for different purposes, like teaser trailers leaving audiences wanting more or theatrical trailers shown before films to target similar audiences. Trailers are viewed in various locations both in theaters and online on websites and social media.

- Theories suggest genres are difficult to define and each media text presents its own take on genres, through repetition of conventions alongside innovation. My product aims to balance repetition of familiar elements with new creative choices.
Audience research proforma
George Wetton conducted audience research to inform a documentary about classic horror films. Surveys found that teens are most interested in modern horror but may be open to classics if shown their appeal. Videos of teens reacting to 70s horror clips showed they appreciate films that rely less on jump scares. Research also indicated audiences want compelling plots, characters, and villains in horror rather than just gore or jump scares. The 1978 film Halloween was deemed the most iconic. The research revealed most had not seen Hammer House films but were open to watching if encouraged. Overall, the research showed appealing to audiences by highlighting quality of classics relative to moderns.
MEDIA EVALUATION

Testing with the target teenage audience showed the opening effectively set up the scary genre. Through the process, the student learned skills like planning, camera angles, editing, and how technologies can be used to create high quality film openings.
Evaluation
- The document discusses the evaluation of a media product created by the author for their class. It analyzes how the product used or challenged conventions of the gangster genre. It discusses the representation of social groups in the product and who the target audience would be.

To create an authentic gritty realism film, the student used a basic camera and edited the film themselves without help, learning new technology like iMovie in the process.

- 1. Media Studies Project Critical Reflection by Aly Altaf.
- 2. How does your product use, or challenge conventions and how does it represent social groups or issues? • The genre of my video is a thriller/suspense genre, which involves the subject being kidnapped by a mysterious person.
- 3. • My video shows a PoV of a person who's identity is unknown to the viewer, going out of his/her home. The convention that is challenged in this very first shot, is that usually in film openings, the viewer knows who the subject is. In this film opening, the identity is a mystery, which is a challenge to the norm in itself.
- 4. • A convention that is used in my opening scene, is that of the uncomfortableness that comes with going out alone at night time in a deserted area. The camera (which signify the eyes of the subject) can be seen moving around constantly, giving the impression that he/she is either sneaking out of the home (teenager) or scared of someone following them.
- 5. • A social issue that is represented in my film opening, is that of stalking/kidnapping. When the subject turns around, he/she sees a person following them, who suddenly starts chasing him/her. Stalking people, and kidnapping them for ransom and/or sexual abuse or torture is a very big problem in our world, and this is shown in my opening scene.
- 6. • I'm not aware of any real time movies that might have followed the same storyline as mine in their opening scenes.
- 7. How does your product engage with audiences, and how would it be distributed as a real media text? • If I were to choose a distribution company to help advertise for my product in the future, I would choose Lionsgate Studios, as it is known for its thriller movies and is not part of the big six, but still has 6.7% market share in the USA film market. This makes it an affordable, yet well known company (Minnie-major) that will be able to distribute my film at an affordable cost with a reasonable amount of profit.
- 9. How did your production skills develop throughout this project? • From the very beginning of this project, I've been learning firsthand what it's like to be in a producer/director's position. • Firstly, casting is a very difficult job, with so many people wanting to act, and only one role to give out. To cast in this video, I chose a friend of mine who was good in keeping his face expressionless, and wouldn't mind doing many retakes of the same shot.
- 10. • As far as the shooting part was concerned, during the time length of this project, I was able to learn a lot about how to make certain impressions on the viewer about what I wanted as the producer. This mainly included a trial and error process, whereby I would shoot a single scene multiple times until I got the desired shot.
- 11. • I already knew basic editing before hand, but I had to kick it up a notch for this project, for which I took help from the Internet from various sites, mainly yahoo answers.
- 12. How did you integrate technologies in this project? • I used an Ambico HD camera to shoot my video, and Windows Movie Maker to edit the shots. • For posting the video online, I used www.blogspot.com, a service by Google, to make my video available to people online.
