EVALUATION OF THE
FOUNDATION PRODUCTION
BY DILARA OZBALCI
In what way does your Media product use, develop or challenge
forms and conventions of the real media product?
What the
form/conventi
on is…
Explanation… Evidence…
Introduction to the
main character
In order to introduce the main protagonist of my film, I filmed a long
establishing shot of her walking into her house. This shows the audience
the main protagonist and also the place the film sets.
Mood The mood for my film opening is spooky and tense. My opening will make
the audience want to watch the rest of the film as it is scary yet it also
tells a story. It does not give away too much information however it
allows the audience to feel connected making them want to know more
Establishing Setting In order to show the audience where the film is set I have used an
establishing long shot of house as the main protagonist walks into it.
Through this shot the audience are able to establish that this is the main
setting.
Use of Titles Throughout my film opening I have placed my titles in the relevant places
where they are clear enough to be read. My titles fade in and out and I
have chosen a relevant font for my genre.
Music My music for my opening fits in well with my footage. At the beginning
the music is spooky, which makes the audience feel uneasy, however
after the spooky scene in the cellar the music immediately switches to
happy music as the main protagonist walks into the house
What kind of media institution might
distribute your product and why?
• The production company I am using for my film is Hammer Film
Productions. I have chosen Hammer because they have done many well
known films such as The Women In Black and The Quiet Ones. Hammer is
known mostly for producing 'Gothic' horror films. I believe that my film
would fit in with the films that Hammer normally produce.
How does your media product present a
particular social group?
The main protagonist is a young teenager
dressed the typical way a teenager would
be dressed.
She is at home alone and is
inviting her friends over for a
scary movie night.
She is a young attractive
teenager who is home alone,
this is usually the typical
victim of a scary movie.
The main audience my film will attract is
teenagers.
Through the mise en scene the audience can
immediately tell that she is from a middle class
family, this makes the audience able to connect with
her more as it shows the events that occur could
happen to anyone.
My film portrays teenagers as a young
group who like the excitement of
scary movies, which could show them
as slightly immature.
Who would be the audience for your media
product?
• The target audience for my film is male and female viewers over the
ages of 15 as it is a horror film and may be too scary for viewers
under the age of 15.
• I think my film would be watched by teenagers the most as they
enjoy the tension in scary movies and like watching horror films in a
group. However I do not think my film would appeal to older
viewers as they would not enjoy being scared and worried
throughout the film.
• In order to get feedback for my film I showed it to a few people of
my target audience and they said straight away from watching the
opening they could tell what genre my film belonged to due to the
music, editing and flashing shots.
How did you attract/address your audience?
• Throughout my film opening I have only used one character of a young teenaged
girl who fits into the typical stereotype of a teenager. As she is around the same
age as my target audience this could be seen as a bonus feature as the audience
can relate to her more and feel more connected to the film.
• In the opening the girl looks extremely confident and laid back as a teenager
should be. However when she starts hearing noises the audience can tell she is on
edge and due to the connection they may feel to her due to her age the audience
can also feel this tension.

• The music in my opening plays a huge roll in the identification of my genre as the
audience can immediately tell that the genre of my film is horror.
• My film is set in a house that seems to be quite homey and comforting, however
when the girl begins to hear noises the audience begin to think that maybe she
isn't actually alone in the house.
What have you learnt about technologies from the
process of constructing this product?

Looking back at the preliminary task, what do you
feel you have learnt in the progression form it to
the full product?
• Through doing the continuity exercise I found I developed my skills of planning,
editing and camera shots. Through doing these exercises I found that planning
plays an extremely important role in producing work of a high standard as being
organized is essential. When a plan is set for my work I found that it was easy to
just look back at my plan if I ever got confused or did something wrong.
• In my film opening I used many different skills such as camera angles, editing etc.
and the software that I was able to use whilst editing my film allowed me to create
a film of a high standard. Throughout the filming period of my film I learnt the
different shots that would enable the audience to connect with the film more.
Whilst filming I made sure to use the 180 degree rule as it is a major rule of
filming.
• When filming I tried to film the same shots multiple times in order to chose the
best shot and edit out the bits that weren't as good. I also tried to make sure that I
kept the camera on the tripod at all times so that the footage was not distorted.
