My media product draws upon conventions of the social realism genre while also challenging some conventions: - It uses a troubled teenage protagonist and a supporting friend, common in social realism films like Submarine. - However, it subverts conventions through handheld camerawork and character introductions via frozen frames, inspired by non-social realism films. - Theories suggest genres are difficult to define and each media text presents its own take on genres, through repetition of conventions alongside innovation. My product aims to balance repetition of familiar elements with new creative choices.
