2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

The Roman Empire A Historical Colossus.pdfkaushalkr1407
The Roman Empire, a vast and enduring power, stands as one of history's most remarkable civilizations, leaving an indelible imprint on the world. It emerged from the Roman Republic, transitioning into an imperial powerhouse under the leadership of Augustus Caesar in 27 BCE. This transformation marked the beginning of an era defined by unprecedented territorial expansion, architectural marvels, and profound cultural influence.
The empire's roots lie in the city of Rome, founded, according to legend, by Romulus in 753 BCE. Over centuries, Rome evolved from a small settlement to a formidable republic, characterized by a complex political system with elected officials and checks on power. However, internal strife, class conflicts, and military ambitions paved the way for the end of the Republic. Julius Caesar’s dictatorship and subsequent assassination in 44 BCE created a power vacuum, leading to a civil war. Octavian, later Augustus, emerged victorious, heralding the Roman Empire’s birth.
Under Augustus, the empire experienced the Pax Romana, a 200-year period of relative peace and stability. Augustus reformed the military, established efficient administrative systems, and initiated grand construction projects. The empire's borders expanded, encompassing territories from Britain to Egypt and from Spain to the Euphrates. Roman legions, renowned for their discipline and engineering prowess, secured and maintained these vast territories, building roads, fortifications, and cities that facilitated control and integration.
The Roman Empire’s society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority.
Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages.
Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. These engineering marvels not only showcased Roman ingenuity but also served practical purposes, from public entertainment to water supply.

The Art Pastor's Guide to Sabbath | Steve ThomasonSteve Thomason
What is the purpose of the Sabbath Law in the Torah. It is interesting to compare how the context of the law shifts from Exodus to Deuteronomy. Who gets to rest, and why?
This is a presentation by Dada Robert in a Your Skill Boost masterclass organised by the Excellence Foundation for South Sudan (EFSS) on Saturday, the 25th and Sunday, the 26th of May 2024.
He discussed the concept of quality improvement, emphasizing its applicability to various aspects of life, including personal, project, and program improvements. He defined quality as doing the right thing at the right time in the right way to achieve the best possible results and discussed the concept of the "gap" between what we know and what we do, and how this gap represents the areas we need to improve. He explained the scientific approach to quality improvement, which involves systematic performance analysis, testing and learning, and implementing change ideas. He also highlighted the importance of client focus and a team approach to quality improvement.

2. INTRODUCTION
This is my primary research that I carried out in order
to find my target audience, their wishes and desires.
Using information included on this presentation i will
create potential target audience profile, which will be
used in a design of my magazine.

During the research that I have
carried out, I have established that
both, males and females read
music magazines. So the overall
design of my magazine is not
going to be affected by the gender
analysis, since in music, gender is
not something that divides people.
Most part of my target audience is aged
between 10 to 18 years old, due to that the
language and design in my magazine will be
associated with their age. Next to that, there
will be also more mature articles that will
appeal to 18+ audience, since they are also a
part of my target audience and music
community.

Most of the people who read these
magazines are unemployed and this will
have a great effect on the price of the
magazine, as they do not have stable
income and have money to waste. Price will
be affordable for both unemployed and
employed readers to purchase.
Bigger part of people who were given this
questionnaire are actually reading
magazines. Which in the end concludes that
the target audience that I will have to refer
to in my magazine will be quite a large one.
As I have conducted my research I
came upon a fact that 3/10 people
are reading magazines that are not
related to movie, health and fashion.
One of the additional topics may be
music, which is the actual topic of
my magazine. Next question will
determine the actual number of
people interested in music
magazines.

In order to know whether people are actually
interested in the music genre magazines, this
research was conducted and the results prove
that people are interested even if they are not
really reading the magazines. Two people
answered that they do not read magazines, yet
one of those two is interested in music magazine,
proving that the target audience that I am
searching for my magazine is quite a large one,
mostly containing of teenagers.
Two dominating genres in music are Rock and
Rap, meaning that I will mostly focus my
research on these two genres. They will
occupy 60% of my magazine and the rest will
be divided between Pop, Metal and other
genres.
Bigger part of the magazine will be
focused in new music that is coming out
and the current singers, whereas the
rest of the magazine will be about old
music and other topics, such as old
singers, history of music, biggest

After carefully analyzing the survey results, I
have decided to test the number of readers
between most famous music magazines. Vibe
was the most efficient magazine with 50%
answers directed to the magazine. Revolver
and Bilboard were magazines that people are
less interested in to, but still play an important
role in my research on music magazines.
My target audience being
teenagers between 10 and 18
years determines that the price
of the magazines will have to
be low enough for them to be
able to purchase it with their
allowance. The research that I
have conducted determines the
price of the magazine to be
somewhere between 1$ and
2$, which is affordable to both,
employed and unemployed
audience.
7. TARGET AUDIENCE PROFILE
This is Srdjan, a late teen music artist and a member of
my target audience. He is attending his last year of high
school and is 18 years old. His main interests are
listening to music, as well as playing and composing his
own songs. Music that he creates depends on his mood,
it is either rock or rap.
During school days, same as during weekend, he enjoys
hanging out with his friends during free time and classes.
He attends classes such as Music, IT, Mathematics.
During his free time he likes to spend time on internet,
learning new songs, chatting with friends who are not
available to be with him or playing some video games.
Srdjan also likes to play sport, he spent his whole life
playing basketball and give his hearth to it completely.
As well as playing his guitar and composing his own songs, Srdjan likes to go to concerts and
enjoy the music he loves the best he can. He even played on stage a few times with his friends,
with whom he has a band. They play music that is in between rock and rap, since all of them have
a same taste in music. He and his band like to play both old and new music, all of them follow
new music trends such as Wiz Khalifa, but also like to play or listen to 2Pac or some older bands,
singers. He considers himself to be both rock and rap fan at the same time and does not have
problem with other music genres.
8. TARGET AUDIENCE PROFILE
The money Srdjan spends on music CDs, music magazines, guitar equipment, is
sent to him by his parents. He also like to spend his allowances to buy some
new clothes that are related to his favorite bands and singers, to go to
concerts with his friends and also to pay some guitar lessons, if needed.
When in company, he likes to play his guitar with his friends or for his friends,
depending on the mood that they are in. Sometimes they practice for their
own concerts and plays. Srdjan enjoys discussing different music genres,
bands, singers, plays, as well as his favorite ones. His favorite songs are
Lose Yourself by Eminem, who is also one of his favorite artists, Young, Wild
and Free by Wiz Khalifa and Snoop Dogg, who are also his favorite artists.
He is an outgoing and easy person to talk to, he is calm and sporty person and is
not afraid to express his own opinion on the matter. He loves to be a part of
conversations such as music and basketball. Comfortable around his group of
friends and tries to make an impression when meeting someone new.
9. MUSIC DEMOGRAPHICS
As well as doing my primary research into the description of music magazine
readers and their wishes, I have also conducted a secondary research into
music demographics, statistics about it and people listening to music.
I have researched into music that people listen, based on their age groups, the
resouls that I have reached are such that:
30 Years and older people by statistics listen to:
Michael Jackson
The Beatles
The Rolling Stones
An average teenagers listens to:
Avicii
David Guetta
Katy Perry
In average, newer generations do listen to new music, whereas older
generations still stick to older music, the music of their childhood.
10. RESEARCH SUMMARY
In overall I have concluded that my target audience, for my magazine, will be aged
between 10 and 18 years old, with some articles that will have mature content for
older readers.
The content of the magazine will be based on newer music and singers, as well as
bands, there will be some content of the magazine that will talk about older music,
such as Queen, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Jimmy Hendrix and all the legendary bands
and singers.
The overall design and the content will be based somewhere in between rock and rap
genre, different pages and posters for different genres. There will be also a part of
magazine that will have pop and metal genre in it.
The price of the magazine will be in between 1$ and 2$ since it is purchasable for both,
employed and unemployed people. Unemployed people considering students as well
as people who are not currently employed.
