AS Media Coursework: Kerrang! Double Page Analysis.
Headline: The headline, firstly, is appropriate to the anchoredmain
image through the use of mystery;(as explainedbelow)the
headline is incrediblybriefand links to the furtive image that is
anchored. This is a positive element as the fact that it is not very
explanatorymeans that the reader wouldbe forcedto continue
reading the entire article inorderto understand the reference
made withinthe headline. Furthermore, the text has a slight
grungy, depressing essence whichhighlysuggests that the sub-
genre wouldfit perfectlywith the establishedscruffiness. The way
theyhave done this is byincluding an almost handwrittentitle with
a doodle of a bone separatingthe two words. Bonesare frequently
associatedwith death andthe dead.
Target Audience and Genre: By analysingthe NME magazine
cover provided, we candevelopandestablisha somewhat
moderatelyclear target audience andgenre including a
recognisedage andgender demographic. Judging by
numerous features andcharacteristics, we cantellthat this
music magazine targets the young, male sector ranging from
approximately15-20. We cantell this byanalysing various
inclusions onthe cover page (these willbe mentioned within
alternate analysis areas).
House Style: The use of colour
in particularonthis double
page spread is incredibly
significant. The colours adapt a
small range from black to white
includinglight greycolouring.
There is also a slight
implementationof a pale
yellow. The point of thisis to
incorporate some sort of dark
depression into the article
which, in itself, is symbolic of
the rock stereotype that is held
bymany.
Columns, Grids and Basic Layouts: The
provided double page spread contains
excessive amounts of text that are
organisedprimarilythroughthe use of
grids and column. These codesgivea
musk of professionalityto the
magazine and significantlycontrast the
typographyused for the main headline
due to this.
Main Image: The mainimage shows the
entiretyof Bring Me the Horizonwith,
once again, leadsinger Oli standing further
forward to express hisimportance. He
stands withhis palms openalmost as ifhe
is offering a hand to the audience to some
extent relating to the headline reading
“SpiritualHealing”;it is almost as if to say
that the band’s music will healyou
mentallyand Oli is offeringto helpwith
this healing. Furthermore, Oli Sykes is seen
to be in a dark jumper witha hooded
component that is inuse. This give a slight
feeling of espionage andmysteryto the
article whichdoesrelate to the incredibly
brief headline that is included.
