- Representation of working
class people
Representation is the constructed and mediated representation of people, things, ideas,
places.
It is the process by which the media present the real world- Rayner
Things to look at when studying representations?
1) WHO or WHAT is being represented?
2) HOW is the representation created?
3) WHO has created the representation
4) WHY is the representation created in that way? What is the intention?
5) WHAT is the effect of the representation?
The media re presents people, ideas and events.
What we see in the media is in some way a second hand version
The representation has been created/constructed by the selection of specific media
language elements
Every thing we see in a media text has gone through some process to get to us-
MEDIATION
Ideology means BELIEFS and VALUES that our society believes in.
Representation
Reception theory suggests that when a producer constructs a
text, its encoded with a meaning or message that the
producer wishes to convey to the audience
Passive theory:
(also referred to as media effects theory)
The idea that the media injects ideas and views directly into
the brains of the audience like a hypodermic needle,
therefore controlling the way thatpeople think and behave.
The media has a direct and powerful effect on its audience
Active theory:
This is the idea that the audience have an activr role to play
in the understanding of and creation of meaning within a
text
Reception theory:
The producers and owners of media predominantly come from middle/upper
class, highly educated backgrounds and are mainly white males.
They bring to the media, there own political, cultural and religious views and
experiences if they are representing working class identity we have to
question how much versmilitude there actually is.
Representations of working class people:
- They have become either invisible or despised
- Negative representations include how they are seen as lazy and
uneducated
-Positive representations include how they stand together as one as seen in
the film Pride.
