Sonic Perceptual Crossings: A tic-tac-toe Audio GameAndreas Floros
The development of audio-only computer games imposes a number of challenges for the sound designer, as well as for the human machine interface design approach. Modern sonification methods can be used for effective data and game-environment or conditions representation through sound, including earcons and auditory icons. In this work we take advantage of earcons fundamental characteristics, such as spatialization usually employed for concurrent/parallel reproduction, in order to implement a tic-tac-toe audio game prototype. The proposed sonic design is transparently integrated with a novel user control / interaction mechanism that can be easily implemented in state-of- the-art mobile devices incorporating movement sensors (i.e. accelerometers and gyroscope). The overall prototype design efficiency is assessed in terms of the employed sonification accuracy, while the playability achieved through the integration of the sonic design and the employed auditory user interface is assessed in real game-play conditions.
An RSS feed auditory aggregator using earconsAndreas Floros
In this work we present a data sonification framework based on parallel / concurrent sonic earcons’ representations for monitoring in real-time information related to stock market. The information under consideration is conveyed through the well-known Really Simple Syndication (RSS) feed Internet mechanism and includes both text and numeric values, converted to speech and earcons using existing speech synthesis techniques and sonic design guidelines. Due to the considered application characteristics, particular emphasis is provided on information representation concurrency, mainly achieved using sound source spatialization techniques and different timbre characteristics. Spatial positioning of sound sources is performed through typical binaural processing and reproduction. A number of systematic, subjective assessments performed have shown that the overall perceptual efficiency and sonic representation accuracy fulfills the overall application requirements, provided that the users are appropriately trained prior to using the proposed RSS-feed auditory aggregator.

Intelligent real-time music accompaniment for constraint-free improvisationAndreas Floros
Computational Intelligence encompasses tools that allow the fast convergence and adaptation to several problems, a fact that makes them eligible for real-time implementations. The paper at hand discusses the utilization of intelligent algorithms (i.e. Differential Evolution and Genetic Algorithms) for the creation of an adaptive system that is able to provide real-time automatic music accompaniment to a human improviser. The main goal of the presented system is to generate accompanying music based on the local human musician’s tonal, rhythmic and intensity playing style, incorporating no prior knowledge about the improvisers intentions. Compared to existing systems previously proposed, this work introduces a constraint-free im- provisation environment where the most important musical char- acteristics are automatically adapted to the human performer’s playing style, without any prior information. This fact allows the improviser to have maximal control over the tonal, rhythmic and intensity improvisation directions.
Provisioning the Cloud within XLcloud, OW2Con'13, Nov. 2013, Parisxlcloud
Xlcloud Presentation by Sylvain Bauza, Bull.
Abstract: XLcloud is a three-year long collaborative project funded by the French FSN (Fonds national pour la Société Numérique) programme, call Cloud n° 1, that was initially submitted under the name "Magellan". XLcloud strives to establish the demonstration of a High Performance Cloud Computing (HPCC) platform based on OpenStack that is designed to run a representative set of compute intensive workloads including more specifically interactive games, interactive simulations and 3D graphic applications. In this context, provisioning a full stack from baremetal nodes to running PaaS (Platform-as-a-Service) implies many challenges that XLCloud team has to deal with day-to-day. The goal of this talk is to discuss about the current state-of-art on how to deploy and configure Openstack, how these tools can help XLCloud to match its needs and the current status of the project by itself.

Sound Events and Emotions: Investigating the Relation of Rhythmic Characteri...Andreas Floros
A variety of recent researches in Audio Emotion Recognition (AER) outlines high performance and retrieval accuracy results. However, in most works music is considered as the original sound content that conveys the identified emotions. One of the music characteristics that is found to represent a fundamental means for conveying emotions are the rhythm- related acoustic cues. Although music is an important aspect of everyday life, there are numerous non-linguistic and non- musical sounds surrounding humans, generally defined as sound events (SEs). Despite this enormous impact of SEs to humans, a scarcity of investigations regarding AER from SEs is observed. There are only a few recent investigations concerned with SEs and AER, presenting a semantic connection between the former and the listener’s triggered emotion. In this work we analytically investigate the connection of rhythm-related characteristics of a wide range of common SEs with the arousal of the listener using sound events with semantic content. To this aim, several feature evaluation and classification tasks are conducted using different ranking and classification algorithms. High accuracy results are obtained, demonstrating a significant relation of SEs rhythmic characteristics to the elicited arousal.

Presentation of Xlcloud projet and interventinal radiology Use Case during OW2con'14. The interventional radiology use case of the XLCloud project has the goal to show that the XLCLoud platform can be used to leverage an application requiring both interaction and high performance computing. This simulator, developed by CEA and Esprimed, allows medical staff to prepare or replay an intervention in a 3D interactive environment (manipulation of the radiological system, position of people and their protections) while having the benefit of precise estimation of the dose they are exposed to through a 3D monte carlo simulation optimized in order to provide results in interactive time.
Spatial Enhancement for Immersive Stereo Audio ApplicationsAndreas Floros
In this wok, we propose a stereo recording spatial enhancement technique which retains the original panning / source location, proportionally mapped into the perceived expanded sound stage. The technique uses a time-frequency domain metric for retrieving the panning coefficients applied during the initial stereo mixing. Panning information is also used for separating the original single channel audio streams and finally for synthesizing the expanded sound field using binaural processing. The technique is mainly intended for playback applications over short-distant loudspeaker setups or headphones and, in the context of this work, it is subjectively evaluated in terms of the perceived sound field expansion and the sound-source spatial distribution accuracy.

Enterprise Excellence is Inclusive Excellence.pdfKaiNexus
Enterprise excellence and inclusive excellence are closely linked, and real-world challenges have shown that both are essential to the success of any organization. To achieve enterprise excellence, organizations must focus on improving their operations and processes while creating an inclusive environment that engages everyone. In this interactive session, the facilitator will highlight commonly established business practices and how they limit our ability to engage everyone every day. More importantly, though, participants will likely gain increased awareness of what we can do differently to maximize enterprise excellence through deliberate inclusion.
What is Enterprise Excellence?
Enterprise Excellence is a holistic approach that's aimed at achieving world-class performance across all aspects of the organization.
What might I learn?
A way to engage all in creating Inclusive Excellence. Lessons from the US military and their parallels to the story of Harry Potter. How belt systems and CI teams can destroy inclusive practices. How leadership language invites people to the party. There are three things leaders can do to engage everyone every day: maximizing psychological safety to create environments where folks learn, contribute, and challenge the status quo.
Who might benefit? Anyone and everyone leading folks from the shop floor to top floor.

2. Janet Haven
I like the idea of using lips and bleaching out the
background to create and image. Also the red lips
really make this image stand out more. I would like to
use this artist idea to work with mine by using the red
lips and the bleached out backgrounds. As it is a
simple but powerful image that can work well in for
my front cover.
Janet haven have used many techniques to create this
image. I can see that this image has been edited a lot
to meet their audience. The bleached out area around
the mouth draws the audience to the dark area of the
lips. I can see that the materials used works well the
red lips really highlights the area of the month. This
picture has been successfully because the mouth has
an huge impact on the whole image
I will take the materials and ideas from the image and
use them to create my image. I like the use of having
lips or something that will draw the eye to very fast.
The dramatic colour of the lips give the image more
depth of field. In my picture I would use bright colours
to bring more depth of filed to my pictures.
3. Serein
The use of using a clock and a eye real work well to
bring in contrast into the image. I believe this image
can work well to help me with ideas. I like the
different of colours and the bright eye. It works real
well to enhance the image. I believe that working
with the image can help me with mine.
I can see that Serein has used a blue filter on this
image to draw the audience in. The photograph has
very low light to hence the dark tones and low level
lighting to bring out the light the of the eye. This is
creating a dramatic effect of the picture. By using a
clock inside the eye it brings more contrast to the
eyes. Also by blurring out the eyelashes it make the
stand out more. I believe that this image has been
successfully has the colours enhance the area
around the pupil in the eye.
I will take the materials used in this image and use
them in my. For example I will use the deep blue
colours in this images and use it in my images. This
will create more depth of filed to pictures. I also like
the idea of placing another picture inside the eye.
4. Richard Harp
This is one of the best idea for an image I have
seen. When it comes down to front covers. I like
how simple this image is but yet it say so much. I
can see this image working well and help me to
developed my image further. It realties to my
ideas really well as my book is about a women. I
can see me using this artist idea for my own uses.
When first looking at this image it is not
interesting. It seems to be a very basic image with
basic props. But in some ways using such basic
props makes the image have more depth to it.
Even with the no editing and just a basic
background the image can still draw the audience
in. For my images I want to portray the same
basic imagery has this photography has. The use
of just having bright colours make this image
stands out even with basic props. I would like to
use this idea of colour in my images.
5. Richard Miles
When first looking at this picture you are draw into
the smile and the hair across the face. The image
portrays and innocence about this person. Mostly
because the smile is the main forces of the picture. I
really like the idea of covering the eyes up with
something so innocent and simple. The use of hair is
different and creative way to draw the audience in.
The image is mostly taken up by the face or the hair
making it the forces of the picture. By using a black
and white filter it brings more depth to image and it
enhance the light around the month. The techniques
that have been used for example the low light
around the hair to highlight the face and her
features more. This has a dramatic effect on the
images by using creative skills to hence different
areas. I think that this image has been successfully to
draw the audience in. Mostly because of the way the
artist has used techniques to highlight the features
of the this image. Photo shops has been a key tool
do this.
For my images I would like to use hair has a prop or
something that is same. I like the idea of using a
black and white filter and highlight key area to hence
the colours. In my images I will use a close up lenses
to get a more in-depth image like the photography in
this picture.
