In June 2019, new PC car registrations in the EU + EFTA region felt by 8,4% coloring all countries
trends in red. To a large extent, this drop can be attributed to a negative calendar effect (June
counted on average only 19 working days vs. 21 days in 2018). Country drop accounted from ca. -
2.0% till ca. 15.0% for all of the countries except Sweden which has reduced its new PC registrations
twice (the bonus malus system, introduced on 1 July 2018, affects comparisons with the previous year
throughout 2019)

Italian Market –Variation of New Car Registrations 2019 vs 2018
Italy – Market Overview
Source: UNRAE, Arthur D. Little Analysis ∆'18/'17 ∆'19/'18
Results of the 1° semester of the year (which on average covers 57% of the year's registered cars) closed with a decline (-
3.5%, 1.082.197 cars vs. 1.121.649 in January-June 2018). In June, the market remains sluggish (-3.630 registered cars
compared to June 2018).The distribution channels had a differentiated trend: negative for retail and business (-4.7% and -
11.5% respectively) and positive for the fleet segment (+12,6%). Sales of diesel cars declined more and more drastically: in
June diesel cars lost 21.065 license plates (-22.6%), while petrol cars grew (+27.1%, or 15.791 more units). The increase in
alternative fuels is vigorous (+18,3% or 1.468 more units), but considering that June was already the fourth month of the
eco-bonuses, the "incentives" vehicles are still only a small part of the market

Looking at the C segment, in 2015 there
was a difference of approximately 8% in the
4-year TCO between the petrol and
electric variant. This difference can largely
be accounted for due to the high cost of
making the batteries for electric vehicles
By 2020, the difference in cost is expected
to fall to 4% before narrowing further to
around 1.5% by 2025 and ending up at less
than a 0.5% gap by the end of the 2020s
