Art can mean many different things to many different people and was one of the earliest ways in
which man has expressed him or herself to others, whether it was through cave drawings or
hieroglyphics. It does not begin or end with just drawing or painting, items typically considered art,
or the many other recognized facets of art including architecture, drama, literature, sculpting, and
music. The writing of Beowulf, one of the earliest known written prose, or the Greek plays which
have influenced drama since their inception, are considered some of the greatest forms of art in

Dancing as a fine art can incorporate numerous other artistic outlets as well, ranging from the writing
of the story, the music and the musicians, the designing of sets to the creation of simple or lavish
costumes. This bringing together of artistic expressions from numerous other sources can be
witnessed in other forms, such as plays and festivals, which allow a diverse collective to share
thoughts and styles, these being the most public of art forms.
Poetry is another art form that offers an environment to the creative or expressive need. Writing
poetry can be used as an aid to help think through the conflicting emotions that accompany life. It
is an art much as gardening is. An inspiration for a poem can be a seed. The seed is planted on
paper and usually, though not always, after tending to it the seed begins to take shape until it
suddenly blooms. Poems such as Byron's "She Walks in Beauty", Frost's "The Road Not Taken" and
Shakespeare's "Shall I Compare Thee to a Summer's Day" all began as seeds and have long since
been considered works of art.
Painting and drawing–probably one of the highest acknowledged forms of art–incorporates all

What is Modern Art? Modern Art was created roughly during the 1800s to the 1900s. Before this
period, art depicted religious or mythological scenes that told stories and guided the audience
through art. "Modern Art denotes the style and philosophy of the art produced during that
era."(Arnason) This time was usually connected with art that threw the old traditions aside in a
spirit of experimentation. This doesn't mean that modern art pieces don't have a story or a meaning
behind them. To break out of the tradition, artists had to have courage to do what they loved. In
Basic Writings of Kant, Wood states, "Have courage to use your own reason." Modern art can range
from paintings to sculptures. Some artists experimented with the expressive use of color,
non–traditional materials, new techniques, and new mediums. Two of the most popular modern
works, currently presented at Los Angeles County Museum of Art, were "The Jewel" by Jay
DeFeo and "Irregular Forms: Creation" by Frantisek Kupka . Both of these paintings were
expressed with oil paint on canvas. However, despite the same mediums used in their works, these
two have very opposing feeling from each other.
"The Jewel" by Jay DeFeo was started in 1958 and was finished in 1959. This is a gorgeous giant
piece which measures up to 120" by 57.5". The Jewel recalls that her works of this period were a

Pop art occurred during the mid 1950s to the early 1970s. It started with four artists: andy warhol,
roy lichtenstein, james rosenquist, and claes oldenburg. All four artists took their inspiration from
mass media and the pop culture of the time. The term "pop art" possibly came from several different
origins, the first used in writing attributed to lawrence alloway and alison and peter smithson,
members of the independent group. In fact, the first artwork to incorporate the word pop was
created by eduardo paolozzi, a collage titled i was a richman's plaything. Andy warhol was the
figurehead of the movement, with his paintings of campbell soup cans and coca cola bottles being

So, what is art? Art is a arrangement of ideas that an artist makes or builds. There are various
variations for art that express their found creativity and inspiration to their artwork. Many people
make art to display their emotions and ideas towards life or to create something beautiful for

that certain artwork. Art is understood through focusing on its: function, visual form, content and

impression of their significance comes through our initial visual interpretation. When we first view a
painting or a statue or other piece of art, we notice first the visual details – its size, its medium, its
color, and its condition, for example – before we begin to ponder its greater significance. Indeed,
these visual clues are just as important as any other interpretation or meaning of a work, for they
allow us to understand just what that deeper meaning is. The expression on a statue's face tells us

The Stele depicts a simple scene: a seated man and standing woman behind him stare blankly
straight ahead. A woman standing on the left looks down upon them. All of them are ordinary
humans. They are not gods or goddesses. They are private people. Their clothing is plain,
consisting of simple robes. It is representational of a regular family mourning the loss of one of its
members, a scene that most people, even today, are able to relate to hundreds or even thousands of
years later.
The stele conveys a solemn forlornness that can be seen in the figures' faces. Their mouths are
tightly shut; their eyes gaze blankly ahead. The woman on the left stares ahead with little emotion
on her face. The stele does not depict any motion. All of the figures are standing (or sitting) still, in
quiet memorial. This solemnity adds to the emotion of a grave where the stele once stood. There is
no real clear answer as to who is being mourned. Are the seated man and the woman mourning the
loss of their daughter, on the left? Or is the woman on the left mourning the loss of a father? The
sculpture's ambiguity also adds to the emotion that it evokes. It might even be appropriate for its
purpose. Its function was to mark a gravesite – the site of the body of someone who has died. Death
is one of the most complex parts of life. It is the most ambiguous, for nobody knows for sure what

Throughout history, art has changed and transformed dramatically as empires have fallen and new
civilizations have formed. There have been many different forms of art and extremely different
tastes of art based on which civilization you decide to focus on. According to this opinion, out of
all the different types of art, "the highest form of art is realism." The writer then claims how many
civilizations have undergone intellectual and creative declines when creating unrealistic art. This, of
course, is simply an opinion, but the the thoughts and ideas of this writers bring up many intriguing
questions about art and how society perceives art. First, I will analyze the writer's opinions by
bringing up examples that are in agreement with his or her opinion. In a way, I do agree with the
writer's opinion in the aesthetics of realism compared to other forms of art. For example, the early
Greek marble statue of Kouros is not as appealing to me because of its rigid form and geometric

A wise person once said, "Do not underestimate yourself by comparing yourself with others. It's
our differences that make us unique and beautiful." I had been taught this in one of the most
unusual ways. A few years ago, during the end of the day I had been given an invitation to come

People who have never shared the experience of worrying about being perceived as more criminal
or dangerous due to the color of their skin insinuated that some of these victims could not have
possibly been shot had they simply put their hands up and peacefully surrendered. The resulting
dialogue lead to the mantra of "Hands up, don't shoot" becoming a major part of protests as
participants were unarmed and non–violent, as a symbol of their right to protest peacefully without
worry of injury or death by law enforcement. This aspect of the painting heavily implies the moment
that is being captured at this particular event, as it has likely been noticed by bystanders, possibly
authorities, and they must do all they can to show that they are harmless. To add to this, the men in
the front of the crowd have their heads tilted slightly upward, with a hooded gaze looking over the
path ahead; a path that may be blocked by those who wish to silence them. To highlight this point,
half the painting is awash with harsh, scratchy strokes of white, distorting the crowd and covering
the majority of the primary figures, most notably their mouths. This is a very literal homage to the
idea of whitewashing and silencing those protesting against issues that white people do not face, as

I used pencil in order to create a high contrast with the shadows and highlights and I used colored
pencils and pen to create both subtle colors and a surreal effect. I am also influenced greatly by
the stories I watch. My mandala art piece is filled with themes from the show RWBY, which is
about a young girl and her team of friends battling monsters and corruption in a dangerous, but
unique world. RWBY inspired me to take a more fantastical approach to my story, building a
world with its own laws, countries, and history. I made this piece into a mandala in order to
expand into different art styles. With the radial design I created a type of abstract symbolism,

My Interest In Art
I believe that everyone has unique interests. Sure, these interests can categorize people into certain
groups, but ultimately, everyone will have their unique personal preference.
Even from an early age, my interest in art is part of what makes me, me. I took, and am currently
enrolled, in every available art class possible over my high school years. I am still a high school
student, and so far I have earned an A in each and every art class I have taken. I have also
maintained a high GPA in all my other classes, which I have also taken a high interest in. In my
senior year, I even placed in an advanced art course, which I will be completing in this spring.
There was a small window to fit through in order to take this course, and I fit all the

My Personal Experience Through Art
Art is such a powerful mechanism in terms of expression. Personally I tend to channel my emotions
into my art to allow for an honest and thought–provoking image. Emotion and expression is the basis
of art as mentioned in the above quote which I think beautifully sums up the foundation of all
artworks. Personal experience is also beneficial to the artists and I can identify with this. By
personifying my personal experiences through art I am able to express myself in a unique way as
well as use it as a form of venting. This is when you can see and feel the raw emotion through the
work of the artist. That is why personal experience is so important, you can identify with the fear
they could have felt through a certain experience or event. An artist who I think has fully lived up to
this is Frida Kahlo. Kahlo was a surrealist artist who expressed herself through art. She went through
tons of emotional suffering with her husband cheating on her with her sister as well as physical
suffering in which she spent several months in hospital after a fatal bus accident. Being put through
so much emotional toll she channeled these emotions through art. We can therefore identify with the
suffering she experienced through her lifetime. Her images are confrontational conversely to my
images that are subtler. I was therefore inspired by her to be more upfront and provoking with my art
through symbolism of suffering.

popular in the Renaissance era due to the aesthetic qualities of the art. This form of art allowed for

example of fine arts is photography. Back when the fine arts became popular, cameras were not

social commentary, therapy, and artifact. Just like the four purposes, each piece of art can be
classified under multiple categories or none at all. Art can provide enjoyment for people, such as
Grand Wood's American Gothic painting. This function of art can be used for amusement by
providing commentary about a specific topic. If art has the function of political and social
commentary it can influence the behaviors of many people. An example of this is the Liberty
Leading the People painting by Eugene Delacroix. Different forms of propaganda, both past and
present, are considered to be under this function of art.

Reflection About Art
Arts generate a strong feeling of admiration, displeasure, or anything in between. Furthermore, art
expresses the human experience, and because of that correlation, there's a stronger bond between art
and humanity. That bond allows art to evoke intense and powerful emotion from us . However, there
is a difference between art and art–like; art has implication beyond the obvious, and art–like being
merely decorative. So it is crucial to remember, that true art has meaning either positive or
negative. Obviously, I learned that through this course and from experiencing art in the real
world. In fact, since the beginning of this course I've been searching for art in the real world, so I
can analyze and try to understand the deeper meaning behind it. Searching and Finding art in the
world has certainly opened my eyes to all of the wonderful things in the world. Searching for art,
I've found that it is everywhere around us and plays a major role in our everyday lives. Since
taking this course I have encountered art in my home and school. Both are places that I go almost
everyday, but my concept of art was so limited that I neglected to notice. At my home the paintings,
books, and even the building itself is art. Infact, my mom has a Thomas Kinkade original hanging
in the hallway and countless bibles lying around. Not only do we have bibles, but on my bookshelf
lies tons of classic literature that I never considered to be art, because I thought art was "just
paintings and stuff".

What Makes Art Art?
Art is an object or piece of work that brings one pleasure. Art is also something you see or feel and
you cannot even begin to describe the ways you like it or how it makes you feel. Art is something
that portrays beauty and happiness. Art lets you see the world through another person's perspective.
Most art seems to tell a story about where a person has been and the things they have encountered
along the way. It lets you connect with the artist and see things through their eyes. Art is a way of
expressing one's self without words. When I think of art, I think of paintings, portraits, sketches, and

The scene has two snowmen at the entrance to the covered bridge. It fills your heart with warmth
and holiday spirit just to look at it.
Portraits to me are art in a different sense. Some of my favorite portraits are by Martin Waugh. It is
what he calls Liquid Sculpture. He uses high speed photography to capture drops of liquid as the
splash into lakes and other bodies of water. To me there is just something so soothing about his
work. It is amazing how a tiny drop of liquid can create such a beautiful work of art. His work
impresses me, because I never really thought of liquid as art before I saw one of his photos.
The formal qualities of art work are somewhat important. I like paintings that flow smoothly with
very fine brush strokes. I think some of the most beautiful art work is produced with a
combination of canvas and oil paints. I like portraits that capture images I normally could not see
