Growing up along the shores of Lake Superior meant that a traditional Finnish sauna was part your
life. In fact some homes did not have a shower or a tub in the home. Instead a Finnish sauna with its
cold water spicket or shower took their place. Most all saunas were built by the home owner using
local designs. A cedar sauna was the most common type that was constructed. However some were
also built using Eastern Hemlock. A Northern white cedar sauna was the most preferred construction.

Shropshire Lad, holds as its main theme the premature death of a young athlete as told from the point
of view of a friend serving as pall bearer. The poem reveals the concept that those dying at the peak of
their glory or youth are really quite lucky. The first few readings of To an Athlete Dying Young
provides the reader with an understanding of Housman s view of death.
Additional readings reveal Housman s attempt to convey the classical idea that youth, beauty, and
glory can be preserved only in death.
A line by line analysis helps to determine the purpose of the poem. The first stanza of the poem tells of
the athlete s triumph and his glory filled parade through the town in which the crowd loves and cheers
for him. As Bobby
Joe Leggett defines at this point, the athlete is carried of the shoulders of his friends after a winning
race (54). In Housman s words:
The time you won your town the race
We chaired you through the market place;
Man and boy stood cheering by,

For my civic or political participation, I volunteered with CPS s GIV day for a poverty simulation.
This is a half a day on the Friday of orientation week is available to first year s students. The students
are able to learn about civic issues like poverty and how Gettysburg College works with the issue and
community. As a member of Gettysburg College, I have volunteered with CPS in many capacities and
have done the poverty simulation as a first year. I also choose this engagement because I have
volunteered or participated in it every year except when I was abroad. This opportunity also allowed
me to complete five of my required hours for my sorority and service fraternity. At the end, GIV day I
an amazing way to get involved on campus, and be reminds about key issues that affect the
community and world.
First year students will come to the College Union Buildings Ballroom on the Friday of Orientation
with little to no idea what they are going to experience for half of the day. They will be assigned a
discussion table, a community group number, and a poverty simulation table number. The day is spit
up in half, where for the first half of the students will go to the community site and the other will go
through the poverty simulation. After both are done, the group will switch.

Lose stones crunch underneath my feet as I walk along the sand towards my favourite beach, metres
away was my little hideout place which I named my special place and there standing was me a 7 year

Beowulf, an Anglo Saxon epic poem, contains several rhetorical strategies. The poem follows the life
of a noble warrior named Beowulf while he quests to live up to his father s name. In the poem,
Beowulf overcame many obstacles primarily those of which involved battling supernatural creatures.
Epic poems were generally written during the Anglo Saxon era. They are commonly written in an
elevated style in order to glorify the deeds of a legendary hero or god. Literary works during the Anglo
Saxon era usually focussed around a quintessential war hero of strength and noble standing while
often times referring to the Bible and Christianity. These traits of Anglo Saxon writing can
undoubtedly be found within Beowulf. Throughout the poem, the author expresses epic poem traits
through the use of rhetorical strategies. The author used literary devices such as imagery, allusion,
metaphors, and tone to express the epic traits of a legendary hero with significance, a vast setting, and
supernatural beings.
Beowulf, the fearless warrior of Geatland, established his role in the novel as the stereotypical Anglo
Saxon main character. Throughout the poem, Beowulf was unconditionally praised by the people for
his valor and strength. He commonly boasted about his fearless characteristics, When it comes to
