Essay on Varying Patterns of Speciation
Varying Patterns of Speciation
Wallace s line, located in the Malay Archipelago, is one of the best known and most studied
boundaries of zoogeography in the world. It is a transition zone between the islands of Borneo and
Sulawesi and the islands of Bali and Lombork, which marks both the convergence and division of
the diverse flora and fauna found in the Asian (Borneo, The Philippines, and Western Indonesia),
and the Australian regions (Sulawesi, Eastern Indonesia, Australia, and New Guinea) (Schulte
2003). The hypothetical line was first proposed by Alfred Russel Wallace in 1858 after observing
many morphological differences of various bird species in the Asian and Australian regions (Raven
1935). In the past, to confirm the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Around 140 million years ago India separated from the still connected South America African and
Antarctica Australian landmasses and drifted northward until it collided with Eurasia (Europe and
Asia). This collision created a continental block which caused a separation of the Antarctica
Australia landmass and caused the individual landmasses to shift in opposite directions (Whitmore
1981). This separation formed an underwater ocean ridge, which caused Australia to drift
northwestward. Around 15 million years ago, Australia converged with Asia, uniting the diverse
flora and fauna of both regions (Schulte 2003; Whitmore 1981). It was then the continuous
separation of these two landmasses that has dynamically shaped the present day distribution of
unique ecosystems and species found on the Asian and Australian continents, as well as on the
islands in the Malay Archipelago.
When Wallace drew his hypothetical line to define the boundary between Asian and Australian
zoology, he had an incomplete understanding of continental drift and plate tectonics. He only used
morphological observations of cockatoos found on Lombork and Bali, and of parrots found on
Borneo and Sulawesi, to support the placement of his line

Horse Application Essay
I feel as if my application would be incomplete if I did not discuss my absolute and overwhelming
passion for equestrian sports and the horses, our teammates, we compete on. Ever since I was
little I had a strong desire to touch or even get a glimpse of our equine friends. The moment I
finally was able to ride it clicked, this was the thing I have always wanted to do. Horses and the
sport of riding makes up who I am, my heart and soul goes into it. When I was young I obsessed
over horses as do most young girls but, that obsession never changed as I grew older. All the falls,
all the heartbreak and stress that it caused made me fall even more in love with it. I have now been
riding for twelve of my seventeen years of life and I do not ever... Show more content on

I have met some very stubborn horses that years down the road I discovered had actually taught me
so much more than any other horse ever would. That is what influenced me to take on the
opportunity of buying and training a three year old unbroken arabian. He has come to teach me
not only things about riding but also life lessons. I have gained patience, trust and understanding
from him. He is now six years old and despite the fact that some days I felt as if we would never
get anywhere in our training he is now an excellent horse. Taking an animal that has never had a
person on it before and making it completely calm and even excited to work with a person on it s
back is an incredible thing and I am happy to have been able to experience this.
Being an equestrian is who I am and who I will always be. I have learned so much from the
horses and the people who make up this sport and I hope to learn more as the years go on. Every
single horse that I have ever met has fueled my passion and my love for this incredible sport. I
have no idea what I would do if it had never came into my life, it means everything to me. I hope
that riding in college can help me to continue on in my learning of this amazing

China s Rise and the US Japan s Respond
China s rising has become predominant issue after more than two decade since it opened it
economy for the world capital. China has become center of economic growth in the region since it
started to become economically integrated to globalized world. Concurrently with that
development, China military capability grows to become more powerful. In 2013 SIPRI reported
that China s military spending had reached $188 million, which means steadily increase of 7.4 per
cent from 2012, and doubled from expense in 2004 (Deutsche PresseВAgentur 2014).

The end of the Cold War that created peaceful space and flourishing Chinese economic growth
influenced the speed of military modernization and shifted its focus on protection of maritime
resources and defending of territorial issue in the south and southeast (Ross 2009: 55; Storey 2008:
115).
Meanwhile in southern part of its territory several maritime dispute disputes began to attract
China s attention. During early decade of 1990s, China had just ratified United Nations
Convention on the Law of the Sea 1982 (UNCLOS 1982) in 1992. The ratification is going to
allow China to claim 200 nautical miles as its exclusive economic zone (EEZ) and could exploit
oil and gas located in South China Sea basin. Beside that, the growing tension because of Taiwan s
independence in 1990 had significantly altered China focus to the South and modernization its
military force. Geopolitical nature of the potential maritime conflict in the south had forced China
to modernize its naval power (Storey 2008: 115).
This could be considered as changing posture of China s military capability from cumbersome
continental power towards more modern and dynamic naval power in responding future political
and military dispute in the southern part of its territory (Ross 2009: 56). China s military
modernization that aims to built capability to project its power

Before a seasoned investor makes an investment in a company, he assesses what the likely exit
size will be for a company of a given type and industry. This will help him back into the amount
of equity that he should invest in order to reach his return on investment goal. In the RBS case
for example, if the investor thinks the potential for exit is $50MM, but that the % of ownership
including follow throughs needs to total 15% of the exit then the exit amount for the investor
would equal $7.5MM. Working one more step backwards, if the investor was expecting a return
(i.e. cash on cash multiple of 10x or 10 times), then his initial or total investment including follow
throughs needs to total no more than 750K. Secondly, the size of the market or industry
influences just how realistic the calculations of the first part above are. If the market or industry
size is greater than the potential for exit, then the likelihood of the calculated valuation is
possible. If however, the market or industry size is less than the potential for exit, then the
valuation is unrealistic and the size of the investment should be scaled back. In the RBS example,
the market/industry was described to be $320MM and the market share for the company is only
10% or $32MM, the investor % of 15% would amount to $4.8MM potential exit. Under a 10x

Child Abuse In Frankenstein
Imagine being young again, sleeping in your childhood bed, oblivious to the world around you.
As you sleep, your dreams slowly evolve into a terrible nightmare. You toss and turn until you
wake with a jolt. Quickly, you rush to your parents room and tell them what happened. They
know exactly what to do, and soon you head back to bed, ready to dream once more. But what
would you have done if your parents weren t as understanding? Would you still have come to them
for help? And if not, how would you have dealt with the problem on your own, and what
differences would there have been in the outcome? John from Brave New World, Grendel from

Neglect often spurs negative thoughts within a child, which may either be directed inward or
outward (Olive 69). With Grendel and the Creature s frequent outbursts and destructive
behavior, it is obvious they chose the latter, causing them to show signs of conduct disorder
(directing feelings outward would involve violence towards others and other acts of aggression,
which are key factors to diagnosing conduct disorder) (Keenan 328). The aggression is caused
by their strive for satisfaction in fulfilling their superegos, because it is impossible for them to
do so ( Psychologically ). The Creature, desperate for empathy, tried to convince the blind De
Lacy to trust him, but his plans were foiled when the rest of the family saw him. In a last effort,
the Creature seizes the old man and tells him Save and protect me! You and your family are the
friends whom I seek. Do not you desert me in the hour of trial! which is then mistaken for an
attempted attack. The cottagers quickly leave, abandoning the Creature, who shortly after destroys
the house in which they lived (Shelley 93 95). Similarly, Grendel, attempting to return a corpse he
had found in the woods, revealed himself to the humans, hoping for peace and friendship. Instead,
the men attacked him with spears and battle axes. Grendel then crushed the body in his arms and
fled (Gardner 51 52). These rejections thus had a lasting effect on

CASE STUDY THORNTONS PLC Introduction In September 2003 Thorntons, the Uk s largest
manufacturer and retailer of specialist chocolates, completed a three year planning period aimed at
achieving a turnaround in the company s performance. While company turnover had been increased
to £167m (= €250m) providing Thorntons with an 8 percent share of its core market, boxed
chocolates, profit after tax had declined to the lowest level for seven years (Exhibit 1). During that

The demand for Thorntons boxed chocolates follows a strongly seasonal pattern: 35 percent of
sales are in the seven week period before Christmas, a further 10 percent are for Easter, including
three million Easter eggs. The combination of providing a fresh product together with the need to
meet a seasonal pattern of demand places particular pressures upon the company s manufacturing
facilities. A proportion of the Christmas product is produced several months in advance,
maintaining freshness through chilled storage. However, Thorntons chocolates are enrobed in
chocolate, rather than moulded. Their hand made appearance makes the process of packing
boxed chocolates less open to automation than is the case for moulded chocolates (with their
more uniform shape an size) produced by companies such as Cadburys. The seasonal demand for
packing staff requires the increased use of casual workers, with consequent falls in efficiency.
Seasonal demand also requires the use of temporary staff in the retail outlets to meet a sales pattern
that can within a few days increase tenfold; typically the company sells ВЈ10m of chocolate in the
last 72 hours of Christmas trading. At times the company has sold icecream (self manufactured or
bought in) as an attempt to offset the effect of low, off season, chocolate sales. In certain respects

Hoffman In Tootsie
In the Movie Tootsie, The character played by Dustin Hoffman is disguised as a woman and is
speaking to a beautiful young actress played by Jessica Lange. During a session of late night girl

up to me and say, I could lay a big line on you, but the simple truth is I find you very interesting,
and I d really like to make love to you. Wouldn t that be a relief? Later in the movie, a twist of
fate throws them together at a cocktail party, this time with Hoffman s character dressed as a

It works the other way too. When people are in a subordinate relationship (like a driver with

break the spell with a bald businesslike proposition. It is in the arena of sexual relationships,
however, that the linguistic dance can be its most elaborate. In an episode of Seinfeld, George
is asked by his date if he would like to come up for coffee. He declines, explaining that caffeine
keeps him up at night. Later he slaps his forehead: Coffee doesn t mean coffee! Coffee means

Morbius Fatal Folly
As pointed out by Merrell Knighten in his essay called The Triple Paternity of Forbidden Planet,
the main difference between Shakespeare s The Tempest and the 1956 science fiction adaptation
Forbidden Planet (referred to as FP) is the use and control of power. In The Tempest, Prospero
knows what power he holds through the use of his books and spells, and ultimately uses these
powers to restore order to the island. However, in forbidden Planet, Morbius powers are unknown
to him and ultimately lead to his demise. This essay will show how Morbius may be considered a
more disastrous character than Prospero due to his lack of realization of the power which ... Show

For Miranda s lover Ferdinand, the film inserts Commander Adams who is in fact the leader of
the rescue expedition sent to relieve Dr. Morbius and his supposed companions. There are no
relations between the film and the play with regards to Morbius fellow colonizers of Altair 4,
but this has to do with the fact that the film was a sci fi adaptation. The drunken butler Stephano
is countered in the film with the Tennessee bourbon sloshing space cook. The character of
Caliban resonates in the film by use of the Id monster, and finally Ariel is engrossed through the
character of Robby the Robot. A closer reading of some of the characters in FP will reveal
parallels outlined by Campos. Campos shines light on the fact that [Prospero and Morbius] are
figures that, isolated from the rest of mankind, have devoted their lives to the study of some books
which have granted them an extraordinary, almost supernatural power (Campos, 285). The main
connections between the two are their utilization of science and magic. As pointed out by Campos,
the film gives a clear implication that science becomes the magic of the future (286). This statement
seems to be truthful as in Shakespeare s time magic would be thought to be no different from the
scientific breakthroughs of our time. For example a Shakespearean audience would marvel at the
strides science has taken in the modern day, such as the utilization of electricity.

The Great Gatsby And Angry Mindsets Of Modernism
Modernism brought a new era to fiction as a whole. With World War One raging distress and fear
to people worldwide, the modernists as a whole were very angry. They were angry with the
propaganda of the time telling them that war was good; those who d seen the battlefield knew
better. They despised their didactic Victorian predecessors, who taught clear divisions between right
and wrong. Modernists instead believed that authority figures were corrupt and that morality is
often unclear. This comes to light especially within the poems of Eliot and Yeats, and especially in
the modernist manifesto Blast. With this lack of clarity, the writing of this time shifted
dramatically. The writings reflect the confused, frightened, and angry mindset of... Show more

The Apostle Paul sees visions of immense human suffering during the apocalypse, all of which
are contrasted against miraculously beautiful images of eternal happiness. Perhaps Yeats is
snickering at the Bible itself with all it s little contradictions as it begs people to believe in it. Or
perhaps Yeats is bringing out the fear that underlies Christianity a fear of hell, of losing one s
purpose, of not being included in the rapture and suffering the consequences. Yeats is clearly
mocking Christianity and the idea of a Second Coming as if people are not already living in a
consistent state of suffering and happiness already. Eliot uses a an even bolder approach in his
poem The Hollow Men . The epigraphs start with an allusion to Conrad s novella Heart of
Darkness, simply saying Mistah Kurtz he dead (2318). Considering the character Kurtz acted like
as a God like figure that ended up murdering the native Africans, Eliot sets his poem up with a great
disrespect toward authority figures before it even

360 Degree Photography Affordances and Constraints
Media has changed vastly over the decades. We have different styles of media, different ways to
view media, and so many different options when it comes to creating media. A recent technology
that has started to gain traction is 360 degree photography. This new technology allows people to
view more than traditional 2 D perspective. With this new way of being able to capture a scene

Being able to capture everything around you, then allow another person to experience entirely the

Having devices that allow us to put on a headpiece and be put into another reality is a huge step for
media.
With these devices, unfortunately, come many constraints. The content creator has more options
for what the viewer can see, but at the same time it may not be what they want the viewer to see.
In most forms of media today there is a main point that the viewer is observing. 2 D perspective
video creators are able to change perspectives of how the viewer sees the media, but with 360
degrees the viewer may not see it in the same way the original creator intended. The viewer may
even miss main points entirely because they were looking around and the main point of a video was
behind them. On top of this the viewer may not even be able to watch the video. Many people
report nausea when watching videos in 360 degrees. If there is not a way to ensure people do
not feel sick while watching the videos, that means that this media will be limited by the
number of people who are able to tolerate it. Being able to create the quality of content that is
currently available on 2 D platforms may be difficult could also be an issue. Movie shoots
require a lot of people and equipment, which is all behind the camera when only shooting one
perspective. In a 360 movie you have to make sure you are capturing the things you want and
nothing more. There is most likely going to be more work creating

Classroom Management For Early Childhood Education
Abstract
The topic explored by this study is classroom management for early childhood education. In general,
the literature seems to indicate that effectiveness of classroom management. The information
presents skills necessary for teachers to use to become successful in the classroom. Some research
calls for a series of steps for one to take teachers to become successful in the classroom. Each task
varies from teacher to teacher, but overall to have complete success with classroom management
one must practice, practice, and practice to become consistent with the skills and to prepare to be
successful. The existing literature shows that classroom management is a complicated concept that
has transformed over time. Various factors must be controlled to enhance the effectiveness of
classroom management. The role of classroom management should never be underestimated as it
determines the nature of citizenry a country anticipates to have. Apart from examining the models
for classroom management, the article explores factors affecting classroom management and
proposes some reliable classroom management strategies in early childhood education.
Introduction
Classroom management within early childhood field is essential for analysis. This topic is relevant
because early childhood management has great implications on the country s citizenry. Classroom
setting has been used as basic platforms for developing the society. This topic was prompted by the
fact that earlier studies

To enforce the health and safety law there are inspectors such as the Health and Safety Executive

Light And Darkness In Heart Of Darkness
Light and dark are generally juxtaposed to highlight the maleficent and the beneficent. Alternatively,
in both Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad and Native Guard by Natasha Trethewey, light and
dark symbolism is used to convey that an outward appearance can conflict with what is lying
underneath. Conrad shows that greed can be hidden under seemingly good intentions, and
Trethewey shows that physical traits do not tell one s whole story.
In the novella Heart of Darkness, Conrad uses light and dark to represent life and death. Although
the Europeans believe they are bringing light and life to the Congo, in reality, they are bringing
darkness and death. Sometimes one s real intentions can be eclipsed by their actions. While
Marlow is in the Congo, he witnesses disturbing sights. For example, one of the first things
Marlow sees in the Congo is a few natives dying slowly with looks of pain and despair while
leaning against trees (Conrad 19). Even with this, Marlow is generally unaffected and focuses
more on the landscape than the people dying. In order to disassociate from the bad, Marlow tends
to focus on unimportant details, which plays into how the evil, underlying motives of colonization
can be masked. A critique of Heart of Darkness describes this phenomenon as the enlightened
façade the Company has for the general public to continue imperialism (Allingham). It is easier
for everyone to accept that the Company is improving the Congo rather than looking deeper and

Witchcraft Hysteria In The 17th Century

coincided with the emergence of the Renaissance. Economic growth, newly structured capitalistic

its citizens overcame the overwhelming death toll (due to previous wars and the notorious Black

power which all soared to an all time high. One example of a reevaluation of the prospects of
power would be the decrees and regulations undertaken by monarchs of the 17th century in response

Women have been customarily subjugated to household labor without opportunities for

growing need to seek out scapegoats for such atrocities have lead the overarching communities of

Throughout history human behavior has held a continuing fascination for artists of all kinds. The
way in which human beings relate to one another has been a source of inspiration to painters,
sculptors, authors, composers, playwrights, filmmakers and photographers alike.
Relationships between people vary from the everyday dynamics and the significance in which they
value one another and each connection between those relationships makes a different impact on the
one of someone else. There are many relationships people form throughout their lives, for instance
the primary relationships at the start of their lives, between parent and child, and siblings, which
start in the home. A relationship between a parent and child has a special unspoken bond in which
they share indescribable love, never ending care and affection for each other, as the parent is the
only depended and reliable thing they have. A good parent and child relationship can teach a child
how to form other bonds with mutual respect and admiration, such as friendships further on in life.
As people grow and develop, they form secondary connections such as friendships and intimate
relationships.
Friendships are predominantly built on trust, even as young children. Interaction with peers helps to
strengthen character and introduces a sense of belonging with others rather than family. Children
are naturally trusting, which means they form bonds with one another instinctively. As they get
older and gain knowledge,

The Controversial Ending of King Lear by William...
The Controversial Ending of King Lear by William Shakespeare Few Shakespearean plays have
caused the controversy that is found with King Lear s ending scenes. Othello kills himself,
Macbeth is executed, and of course in hamlet, everyone dies. Lear, however, is different from
other Shakespearean classics. Is Lear mad or lucid? Is Cordelia really dead? Is Edmund s delay
explainable? What is the nature of the Lear world that occasioned all of this? How does Knight s
thesis relate to the ending? Critical commentary varies and appears exhaustive. Bradley speaks of
evil, but thinks Lear dies in a moment of supreme joy; Knight argues that however vicious and
cruel the Lear world is, the death of Cordelia represents the future... Show more content on

Foakes thinks that Hamlet now is less suited for the twentieth century than Lear, insofar as Lear
s existential content is what matters, so now the question becomes why would Cordelia want to
live in Lear s world? The play is about protesting a world gone mad. The situation is further
intensified by the Tate emendation that playgoers witnessed for over a century. Arguing from
the perspective of post restoration and neo classical taste that literature must teach virtue, Tate
dropped the Fool, gave Cordelia and Edgar a love interest, thus sparing her life along with her
father: Edgar: My dear Cordelia! Lucky was the Minute Of our approach, the Gods have

The Evolution of Peekay in the Power of One
The Evolution of Peekay in the Power of One Think back to when you were five years old. Were
you sent to a boarding school with kids a couple years older than you? Were you persecuted and
bullied for being a redneck or for just being who you were? Chances are, the answer to these
questions should be no . However, a small little boygrowing up in Africa during the mid 1990s can
probably describe every single tortuous day that he went through in this situation. His name is
Peekay, and he is the narrator in Bryce Courtenay s award winning novel, The Power of One.

die, the Judge becomes frustrated. Then he let out a howl, a mixture of anger and anguish. Why
don t you cry?.... he sobbed and started to kick blindly at me. (50). This is the first of many
challenges that Peekay overcomes. Showing the Judge that he will not cry takes guts and
willpower. Later in the novel, Peekay exacts his revenge on the Judge by knocking him
unconscious and inscribing his name on the Judge s body. Another challenge that Peekay
overcomes is his rejection by Oxford, a prestigious college, for a scholarship. This seems to
surprise everybody, especially after Peekay had done great in the interview and scored high on the
entrance test. The people around me became accustomed to me winning. It was a habit that they

disappointed that, their having done their part, I had somehow failed them. Miss Bornstein and
Mrs. Boxall were distraught beyond belief, having quickly convinced themselves of some kind of

Video Content And Online Streaming
When it comes to video content, students have the choice between a cable subscription and
various online streaming companies. As the demand for video content grows, alternatives to
cable subscriptions have become more popular, like online streaming. Online streaming can be
accessed three different ways: via cable providers (i.e. Verizon Fios), through online video
streaming subscriptions (i.e. Netflix), or for free (i.e. piracy). In this report, the focus of online
video streaming will be on subscription services. This means that the video content is only
available through a paid subscription. The choice to subscribe to a paid online streaming service
can be influenced by many factors. Adoption of Online Streaming With the constant
development of video content, it s important for users to have easy access to view it anywhere
and at anytime. People are now able to do this with the creation of online streaming services.
Instead of the typical way of watching video content on a television set, people can now use any
electronic device to view their favorite shows (Henkel, 2016, p. 46). New media options to view
video content have fewer constraints than traditional media with regard to content offering and the
broadcasting program delivery method (Kang, 2014, p. 1043). Media richness in the digital
environment is defined as a wide range of selection (Kang, 2014). Online streaming subscription
services often have greater media richness than traditional cable options,

The Concept Of Intrinsic Motivation Theory
In addition to Maslow s self actualization and moreover, there is self determination theory (SDT),
which suggests that people are motivated to grow and change by innate psychological needs. The
theory identifies three key psychological needs that are believed to be both innate and universal: the
needs for competence, connectedness and autonomy. The concept of intrinsic motivationplays an
important role in self determination theory. Psychologists Edward Deci and Richard Ryan
developed SDT and determined motivation to be that which people tend to be driven by; a need
to grow and gain fulfillment. The first consideration of self determination theory is that people
are actively directed toward growth, mastering challenges, and taking on new experiences, which
are essential for developing a cohesive sense of self. Explained further by Deci and Ryan (2002),
SDT begins by embracing the assumption that all individuals have natural, innate, and constructive
tendencies to develop an ever more elaborated and unified sense of self. That is, we assume
people have a primary propensity to forge interconnections among aspects of their own psyches as
well as with other individuals and groups in their social worlds.
SDT embodies a wide ranging outline for human motivation and personality. SDT articulates a meta
theory for framing motivational studies, a formal theory that defines intrinsic and a variety of
extrinsic motivations. Furthermore, SDT also focuses on how social and

Comparison Heart of Darkness to Road Not Taken Essay
Journeys, planned and unplanned, are an inevitable part of life. Their consequences, foreseen or
unforeseen, play an important part in a person s growth.
Life is the journey, the inevitable journey, and the experiences thoughout life, the journeys within
the journey, are the planned and unplanned experiences that change people and are a huge part of a
person s moral and personal growth. In the novella Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad, the
physical journey through the Congo is parallel to the inner journey of the main character Marlow.
Similarly, the poem The Road Not Taken by Robert Frost, relates on both a literal and metaphoric
level to the concept of a journey. The individuals creation of their own direction on a journey is...

Unsettling as it is to him, Marlow identifies with this notion, and it undoubtedly causes him to
contemplate who he is and rethink his place in the world, and change his overall perseption.
Conrad conveys clear ideas of how the creation of their one s direction on a journey leads to strong
inner growth.
Just as Conrad conveys the creation of one s own path subconsciously in Marlow, the poem Road
not taken by Robert Frost explores this idea, represented my literal paths and an alternate, unspoken
third path. The metaphor of the physical journey shows the moral growth in the protagonist. The
poem is written in first person, giving it a very personal and reflective tone, expressing a pivotal
moment in the persona s life. The use of andante, the flowing rhythm establishes a conversational
tone. The rhyme scheme is simple and effective throughout the poem, however, it changes in the
final stanza. By implementing a new scheme here, the final thought of reflection is emphasized.
The less traveled road is symbolic of the gamble of choosing a more individual path in life, the
protagonist s own road. This can be compared to the quote by Antonio Machado, Travelers, there is
no path, paths are made by walking. This quote exemplifies the fact that walking the path is more
important than

Why Is Tony Harding Unfair
Everyone here has heard something about the biggest figure skating scandal there was in the
world. Whether you saw the new movie starring Margot Robbie or heard in recent months on the
news about this event that took place twenty years ago. I am talking about Tonya Harding. She
was a curvy, blonde, woman who was rather poor. Over the many years of her skating career many
people in The United States Figure Skating Association have tried to ostracize Tonya from the
skating community because she chose music she wanted and was different. I think Tonya Harding
was tried unfairly because she was not the ideal female skater at the time because of her weight,
because she was female, and because she was poor.

Blacks and whites were separated, they were not allowed to do or go anywhere there was a white

the company for at least 20 days or more, and depending on how many employees a company has
is how much compensation they will receive (Bohlander, G.W., Snell, S. (2010).
The Civil Rights Act of 1991 was amended so that employee that are victims of sexual harassment,

$50,000, for a company that has 100 to 200 employees that amount would be $100,000 and if a
company has over 500 employees the amount would be $300,000. An employee under the act can

The Not So Great Gatsby Many things are called great such as food or a football team, but what is
the true meaning of greatness? What are characteristics that one person or thing must have to be
considered great? In The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald, the word great is used to describe the
characters and even things, but when analyzed these great things or people are actually quite the
opposite. Jay Gatsby, whom the story is centered around, is a young, wealthy, and charismatic
young man with a mysterious background. In The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald, Jay Gatsby

Prince Edward Island Of Canada
Prince Edward Island is a five thousand, six hundred and sixty square kilometre island off the
eastern coast of Canada. When an island is part of a larger nation, and not provided with a physical
connection to the mainland, it is a dismembered limb from the functioning body of the country. The
insularity is a handicap, rather than a factor of uniqueness. Transportation from the island to the
mainland has typically been somewhat of an issue, as the Northumberland strait between the
landmasses freezes partially in winter, making travel difficult. The first peoples of the island, the
Mi kmaq, would make the crossing via canoe and carry the boat over the patches of ice. Once
settlers inhabited the island it became necessary to have constant... Show more content on

In 1775, the British Governor Walter Patterson persuaded the islanders to carry the mail to Nova
Scotia in the same way. These voyages became important to the colonies, since they proved that
the island was not isolated from the outside world for months each year. In the first few decades
of the nineteenth century, trips became a regular service with a captain and crew once per
week. Although regular, these trips remained dangerous and a major inconvenience. A canoe
was replaced by an iceboat with a captain and three crew. The sick and injured, as well as the
women and children, would be carried across the ice in the boat, but would have to pay twice as
much. The trip from Cape Traverse on PEI to the Bay of Fundy in New Brunswick took at least
a day, and passengers ran the risk of catching frostbite and hypothermia. In a rare case a boat was
stranded overnight during a winter storm and a man was killed by extreme hypothermia. As time
went by, safety procedures were introduced. Boats were to be sent out in groups of three, and were
required to carry compasses, axes, food, and fire making materials. Because of these dangerous,
uncomfortable, and awfully expensive journeys, Prince Edward Island made government funded
transportation a necessary requirement for the island joining confederation.

Trade Unions And The Workplace
Trade Unions are organisations and purpose is to look after employees in the workplace and
protect their rights. The way trade unions work, is that an employee needs to become a member of
a specific trade union, pays a fee to invest in the union s operations. In turn trade unions help
employees with things such as health and safety in the workplace, protection from discrimination,
proper pay and leave entitlements, making sure that the workers rights are protected etc. Unions
also aim to protect the interests of a union member for example, they commence campaigns and
negotiations for increased pay rates and they also try to improve working conditions such as health

The Insolvency Of Human Nature And The Nomological Notion
The Insolvency of Human Nature and the Nomological Notion: A Refutation of Machery As one
examines Edouard Machery s A Plea for Human Nature, it is clear that there are a number of critical
themes to examine within the nomological context set forth (Machery 2008). In a very salient
sense, Machery posits that the set of characteristics that humansare most often inclined to posses,
are indeed representative of humannature and are a consequence of the species evolution (Machery,
pp. 3, ll. 56 58). Moreover, Machery puts forth that the existence of human nature does not
circumscribe a tie within the human species (Machery, pp. 3 4, ll. 85 90). Herein, Machery also
notes a class formation within a biological context that includes... Show more content on

Yet in the case of the former, one can reason that what is deemed common sense, could easily vary
across time and place, so as to make such judgments more akin to conjecture rather than fact. In
the case of the latter, while apt modern sciences may in some regard be able to depict what
anguish is from a physiological standpoint, quantifying the degree of physiological change and its
resultant effects would be extremely variable and call in to question the arbitrary title of anguish.
Indeed, empirical physiological results and common sense conjectures would likely fall on an
enormous spectrum. For example, empirical data might detail some mean regarding hormonal
levels, while themes regarding perception might feature general sensibilities formed by individuals
and groups. To be sure, one would likely find a host of other factors in which one could confirm
their own bias about the nature of anguish. Herein, such broad ranges of results would have not
characterized anguish, human nature, or what people tend to posses, but rather merely that humans
have fairly rudimentary and vacillating senses. Moreover, there is not much of a sense of what is
at stake, as generalizations about given groups could be deemed as their given nature, only to

The Cretaceous-Paleogene Boundary Essay
The Cretaceous Paleogene Mass Extinction
Wil Creasy Student Number: 20921355
The Cretaceous Paleogene boundary (K Pg boundary) was host to one of the three largest mass
extinctions in the past 500 million years. Evidence suggests it was the result of a large asteroid
impact approximately 65.5 million years ago in Chicxulub, Mexico; hence why the crater it formed
was named the Chicxulub crater. The crater was approximately 180 kilometres in diameter and was
believed to have led to the extinction of the dinosaurs amongst many other life forms including
marine plankton (calcareous nannofossils and planktonic foraminifera) (Schulte et al., 2010).
Furthermore, it had a number of impacts on the atmosphere and environment including the creation
of sulfuric acid rain and stratospheric dust cloud formations. ... Show more content on

The deposit included a millimeter thick red clay layer that includes an iridium anomaly, ejecta
spherules and nickel rich spinel (Schulte et al., 2010). The age of the deposit coincides with the
time of the mass extinction. It is coincidences such as this that have led scientists to believe that the
mass extinction and the Chicxulub impact are related.
The Yucatan 6 borehole provided significant evidence to suggest that there was an impact event
that took place. The composition of the melt rock was believed to have been the result of an
impact rather than volcanic events (Kring and Boynton, 1992). What allowed scientists to confirm
this, was the surviving clasts of target rock they discovered within the melt, were similar to that
seen In the Manicouagan impact crater. (Kring, 2007) Furthermore, these clasts were said to be
composed of shocked quarts and feldspar, which are indicative of an impact

Monotheistic Religion In The Paleolithic And Neolithic Period
Paleolithic: The Paleolithic period lasted from about 200,000 b.c. to about 10,000 b.c. It was the
early phase of the Stone Age; and encompassed a steady development of stone tools, antler and
bone artifacts, engraving on bone and stone, and paintings on the walls of caves and rock
structures. There was not much structure built or agriculture done in this period as the people lived
a nomadic lifestyle, migrating with the herds of animals they hunted for food.
Neolithic: The Neolithic period lasted from about 9000 b.c. to about 8000 b.c. It was the last phase
of the Stone Age; and encompassed the domestication of animals, the development of agriculture,
and the manufacturing of pottery and textiles. During this period people were beginning to settle
and develop a more sedentary way of life. With this type of life style came territorial issues,
meaning that because of the idea of settling and claiming land people would be more likely to
protect it or fight for it.
Monotheism: The basic definition of monotheism is the belief in one God. The opposite of
polytheism, which is the belief in many Gods, who each serve a different purpose. However, for a
monotheistic religion, the God is all knowing, all seeing and all powerful; this God would be the
sole creator and provider. There are three major religions associated with monotheism, Judaism,
Christianity and Islam.

Upland prairie and oak savanna ecosystems are among the most imperiled vegetation types in
North America. Upland prairies can be described as a type of dry grassland consisting of mostly
native bunchgrass and annual and perennial diverse forbs. Oak savannas are specified as
ecosystems with continuous grass or forb ground cover with a scattered distribution of open
growth oak trees and small groves of oaks. While the Willamette Valley was once dominated by
these landscapes, upland prairieoak savannasystems currently exist in only 0.5% of their historic

To His Coy Mistress By Andrew And Herrick
Humans are very selfish people, they think of themselves much more frequent then they think
about any other parties that might be affected by them. I wish I could say the men are guiltier of
this, but women are just as guilty when it comes to being selfish. However, in the two poems To
His Coy Mistress by Andrew Marvell and To the Virgins to Make Much of Time by Robert
Herrick we see many similarities in their efforts to get with a girl that they like. They both try to
convince the girls that they need to live in the now. Also they use word pictures to make their
interest, which is getting sex, more understandable and seem less important than it is. Lastly, both
have coy lovers who are not quite as interested in having sex with them. These men are using
whatever they can to get the girl and they share similar tactics to do it. The most compelling point in

My favorite is in the poem To His Coy Mistress by Andrew Marvell when he paints this image in
our minds At my back I always hear times winged chariot hurrying near . (Lines 21 22) It sends
chills down your spine it is so realistic and profound. Andrew is telling his girl that he would love
to get to know her better, but time is always right behind him pushing him forward. They both use
these great word pictures; however, to me it appears that neither of them is confident that the lover
will say yes. Kathryn Hogan states in her article The Real Reason Men Are Lonely in Lust that
Energy of attraction created, that energy forms a bond . This is important because Andrew and
Herrick are trying to get their lovers with fancy words and word pictures but, if their lover loved
them then they would already have some kind attraction and bound and wouldn t need convincing.
This making the word pictures used overbearing rather than enticing to the

East Africa And The Arab Slave Trade
The interactions between Africa and the peoples of Asia, Europe, and the Americas have been
transcribed through hundreds of accounts since the beginnings of civilization. Every conqueror
within reach of this continent has attempted to seize the opportunities and resources Africa holds
one way or another. What is arguably the most impactful attempt of controlling Africawas as seen
through the European colonization since the arrival of the Portuguese during the age of discovery.
While the European explorers were at work in Africa, another group of colonizers had their own
foothold for centuries prior, the Arabs. For centuries the Arabs have had interactions and attempts
of imperial expansion in Africa for the benefit of its many resources, most notably the slave trade.
This was seen particularly by the Omani Arabs during the 19th century and their slave trade in the
Indian Ocean. The Omanis expanded their borders into Zanzibar, only to be met with the
hegemonic force known as the British Empiresoon after their expansion. Despite East Africas
proximity away from the British Empire and most of their colonial interests in Africa, they
seemed to have an obsession with intervening in Zanzibar. Particularly, with the Arab s slave
trade in East Africa. How did the British colonial presence in East Africa impact the Arab slave
trade? The answer may seem obvious as to the British s goal to end the slave trade for sake of
liberating the oppressed Africans, but the reality is much

Elementary Forms Of Religious Life
In his theory of how society and the individual coincide with each other Emile Durkheim
believes that the role of the person in society is heavily based on many factors. To Durkheim
society can function either under mechanical solidarity or organic solidarity under the forced
division of labor and depending on which it functions as aids in giving us a deeper
understanding of the person and their role as an individual in society. In his writings Elementary
Forms of Religious Life he claims that each individual carries the whole in himself but to
understand his beliefs an understanding of the individual and society within his writings
Elementary Forms Of Religious Life and Devision of Labor will be beneficial (Durkheim, pg.
226). By looking at the individual, through the lens of his writings Elementary Forms Of
Religious Life and Devision of Labor as building blocks for his theories of social structure it will
aid in explaining why the making of the individual is possible and whether it conflicts with
Durkheim s personal views. When trying to understand the role of the individual and society
through the lens of his writings Elementary Forms of Religious Life and Division of Labor a few
things will need to be established. First of all, when looking through the lens of Elementary
Forms of Religious Life key points differ from Devision of Labor . For example Elementary
Forms of Religious Life sets to explain the studying of primitive culture/religion to

A) Using the data provided, perform a means ends analysis.
During this case study, we can see that the current state the following: there are an increasing
number of competitors in the credit industry. More and more companies enter this industry, making
even more difficult for the bank to compete and gain more customers shares. So, we ve perform a

We could conclude from that analysis that this means end chain helped us to define a bit more what
a credit card customer is expecting when making the decision to go for a company more than
another. If we have that in mind, then it s much more easier to differentiate the company from the
competition and as a results try to gain market shares.
B) What segments have been neglected?
After having a look at the whole document, and after having analyzed the means end chain, we
could say that some segments have been neglected. Indeed, we talk about all the added value option
that we could actually encounter in a credit card but there isn t any research or data on that. Like
what kind of option are the most wanted (insurance? travellers checks ? no international fees ?
etc...). Furthermore, we could see that we lack some information about the link between the
attributes and the benefices. Indeed, we have then both but we don t really know the relation
between them, which makes it more difficult to do the means end chain.
C) What changes, if any, in the product positioning might be recommended based on the attribute
desired? Do you need additional information?
When you see table 2, you could retrieve the information about what s most important for the
customers when we are talking about a credit card. Then, we have the

Compare And Contrast Japan And Europe
Because Japan and France both existed within the genre of feudal society, they shared many
economic similarities. Both feudal systems had common qualities of fief organization, similar
inheritance customs, taxing systems and issues with debt, and the lack of social mobility
characteristic of feudalism. In feudal societies, fiefs are awarded to officials in lieu of salaries.
A fief typically was a plot of land, including household servants, agricultural laborers, and anyone
else who lived on the land; however, it was above all a diffuse bundle of loose claims on rights
with which one obtained the right to participate in the game of power present in feudal societies.
A fief did not necessarily have to be land, but it was overwhelmingly so in both France and Japan
because of the natural economy, led by agricultural pursuits; the more important part of a feudal
agreement was not the land, per se, but rather the ties between lord and recipient. Moreover, in
punishment for breach of feudal contract, forfeiture of the land was possible; the lords in France
had the right to reclaim their gifted fief if they felt they were not well served. There was also the
option of escheat, which allowed the lord to take back their fief in default of a rightful heir.
Fiefdom was common to both France and Japan. Shiki rights in Japan were defined as a right to
profit from the land ; they acted as a sort of deed or title, which could be bought, sold, inherited,
and divided as the recipient of

Patient Satisfaction Is An Important Element Of The...
Abstract
Patient satisfaction is considered an important element of the quality of healthcare, a leading
indicator of patient outcomes and a top priority for hospitals and providers. There is an increased
need to improve quality in the delivery of healthcare services, partly due to the Centers for
Medicare and Medicaid Services pay for performance reimbursement methods. Adjustments
increasing to 2% in 2017 will affect more than 3000 acute nursing facilities nationwide. The
Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services uses the Hospital Consumer Assessment of
Healthcare Providers and Systems survey that measures ten specific aspects of a patient s care,
and results are reported publicly. There has been a great deal of discussion for and against the
survey on all levels of healthcare. Research indicates that a customer service approach is the leading
indicator of patient satisfaction. A bettercustomer service approach is the product of satisfied
employees. Nurses play a significant role in the customer service approach, including advanced
practice nurses.
Improving Patient Satisfaction
[Patient Satisfaction]. Patient satisfaction is a patient s level of contentment with the comfort,
quality and perception of overall well being in regards to the healthcare they obtain. Patient
satisfaction is subjective and often multifaceted making it very difficult to define (Morris, Jahangir,

Essay on Bravery in The Tempest
The Theme of Bravery in The Tempest
Bravery performs a very important role in The Tempest. Different than a motif, the theme of
bravery actually takes form in Shakespeare s play and develops the play itself. However, like a
motif, bravery is used intermittently throughout the play in different form and context. It captures
different meanings and performs different capacities erratically.
A denotative definition from the 15th century, according to the Merriam Webster Collegiate
Dictionary (10 ed.), portrays brave as meaning, [from Old Italian and Spanish, meaning courageous,
wild; probably from Latin, meaning barbarous]. The dictionary then defines brave as a. having
courage: dauntless b. making fine show: colorful, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Another example from the text of brave/bravery would be the presence of spirits and the brave
god [that] bears celestial liquor (II.ii.159). Caliban only knows spirit and charm. He has not yet
encountered what we would call a normal human relationship. The spirits of Stephano and Trinculo
are brave to the kneeling Caliban because they bear a fine show and heavenly charm that will
satisfy his need to be subject to something that is not earthly.
On and on throughout the text, the theme of bravery is evident. Brave and bravery demonstrate our
thematic process throughout the play through the Prosepero s realization of the benefits of
forgiveness over revenge. The thematic direction of Miranda s brave coming of age, and realizing of
her femininity and love of Ferdinand. The brave new world conqueror s Stephano and Trinculo
who are setting out to claim the island as their own and bravely breed a continent of issue from
the brave wonder of Miranda. Stephano bravely professes, Monster, I will kill this man: his
daughter and I will be king and queen save our graces! and Trinculo and thyself will be viceroys.
Dost thou the clouds methought would open and show riches Ready to drop upon me that, when I
waked, I cried to dream again.
Variations of the word bravery come in all different configurations. We have a brave monster
(II.ii.257), in Caliban. We have a brave lass (III.ii.153) that will bring

The Great Debaters Character Analysis
Many characters in the movie The Great Debaters shows qualities that any viewer could have.
They rapidly make a connection with the viewer, and make the movie that much interesting. It
brings the viewer back to a time where racism was at its peak, and African Americans struggle to
live a normal life without being harassed. Samantha Booke, Henry Lowe, and Mr. Tolson are
characters that stood up toe to toe against state Colleges to debate what was going on their
communities. Samantha showed persistence, Henry applied past knowledge, to the new
situation s, and Mr. Tolson was good at taking responsible risk. All three showed great habits of
mind to connect with the reader on a more personal level. First, Samantha Booke habit of mind is
persistence. She is persistence because she never gives up or gets unfocused on the topic she is
arguing about. She is always looking for ways to better her arguments and no matter what she
never gives up. One example is when she leaves the group the night before a debate, after watching
Henry kiss another girl, but the nest morning she is back and rejoins the group. This shows a lot
from Samantha, it shows persistence and a hunger to keep battling and debating until she gets what

  • 2. Essay on Varying Patterns of Speciation Varying Patterns of Speciation Wallace s line, located in the Malay Archipelago, is one of the best known and most studied boundaries of zoogeography in the world. It is a transition zone between the islands of Borneo and Sulawesi and the islands of Bali and Lombork, which marks both the convergence and division of the diverse flora and fauna found in the Asian (Borneo, The Philippines, and Western Indonesia), and the Australian regions (Sulawesi, Eastern Indonesia, Australia, and New Guinea) (Schulte 2003). The hypothetical line was first proposed by Alfred Russel Wallace in 1858 after observing many morphological differences of various bird species in the Asian and Australian regions (Raven 1935). In the past, to confirm the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Around 140 million years ago India separated from the still connected South America African and Antarctica Australian landmasses and drifted northward until it collided with Eurasia (Europe and Asia). This collision created a continental block which caused a separation of the Antarctica Australia landmass and caused the individual landmasses to shift in opposite directions (Whitmore 1981). This separation formed an underwater ocean ridge, which caused Australia to drift northwestward. Around 15 million years ago, Australia converged with Asia, uniting the diverse flora and fauna of both regions (Schulte 2003; Whitmore 1981). It was then the continuous separation of these two landmasses that has dynamically shaped the present day distribution of unique ecosystems and species found on the Asian and Australian continents, as well as on the islands in the Malay Archipelago. When Wallace drew his hypothetical line to define the boundary between Asian and Australian zoology, he had an incomplete understanding of continental drift and plate tectonics. He only used morphological observations of cockatoos found on Lombork and Bali, and of parrots found on Borneo and Sulawesi, to support the placement of his line ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Horse Application Essay I feel as if my application would be incomplete if I did not discuss my absolute and overwhelming passion for equestrian sports and the horses, our teammates, we compete on. Ever since I was little I had a strong desire to touch or even get a glimpse of our equine friends. The moment I finally was able to ride it clicked, this was the thing I have always wanted to do. Horses and the sport of riding makes up who I am, my heart and soul goes into it. When I was young I obsessed over horses as do most young girls but, that obsession never changed as I grew older. All the falls, all the heartbreak and stress that it caused made me fall even more in love with it. I have now been riding for twelve of my seventeen years of life and I do not ever... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I have met some very stubborn horses that years down the road I discovered had actually taught me so much more than any other horse ever would. That is what influenced me to take on the opportunity of buying and training a three year old unbroken arabian. He has come to teach me not only things about riding but also life lessons. I have gained patience, trust and understanding from him. He is now six years old and despite the fact that some days I felt as if we would never get anywhere in our training he is now an excellent horse. Taking an animal that has never had a person on it before and making it completely calm and even excited to work with a person on it s back is an incredible thing and I am happy to have been able to experience this. Being an equestrian is who I am and who I will always be. I have learned so much from the horses and the people who make up this sport and I hope to learn more as the years go on. Every single horse that I have ever met has fueled my passion and my love for this incredible sport. I have no idea what I would do if it had never came into my life, it means everything to me. I hope that riding in college can help me to continue on in my learning of this amazing ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

China s Rise And The Us Japan s Respond China s Rise and the US Japan s Respond China s rising has become predominant issue after more than two decade since it opened it economy for the world capital. China has become center of economic growth in the region since it started to become economically integrated to globalized world. Concurrently with that development, China military capability grows to become more powerful. In 2013 SIPRI reported that China s military spending had reached $188 million, which means steadily increase of 7.4 per cent from 2012, and doubled from expense in 2004 (Deutsche PresseВAgentur 2014). Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The end of the Cold War that created peaceful space and flourishing Chinese economic growth influenced the speed of military modernization and shifted its focus on protection of maritime resources and defending of territorial issue in the south and southeast (Ross 2009: 55; Storey 2008: 115). Meanwhile in southern part of its territory several maritime dispute disputes began to attract China s attention. During early decade of 1990s, China had just ratified United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea 1982 (UNCLOS 1982) in 1992. The ratification is going to allow China to claim 200 nautical miles as its exclusive economic zone (EEZ) and could exploit oil and gas located in South China Sea basin. Beside that, the growing tension because of Taiwan s independence in 1990 had significantly altered China focus to the South and modernization its military force. Geopolitical nature of the potential maritime conflict in the south had forced China to modernize its naval power (Storey 2008: 115). This could be considered as changing posture of China s military capability from cumbersome continental power towards more modern and dynamic naval power in responding future political and military dispute in the southern part of its territory (Ross 2009: 56). Their investment capital is generally limited and if relevant, it has been advantageous for them to pool their funds as a group to not only participate in larger deals but also to diversify risk. They invest in exchange for ownership equity or convertible debt. Angels are interested in start ups in rapidly developing markets (or later stages if they have a proven product) where they can influence the strategy and the management team formation. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Before a seasoned investor makes an investment in a company, he assesses what the likely exit size will be for a company of a given type and industry. This will help him back into the amount of equity that he should invest in order to reach his return on investment goal. In the RBS case for example, if the investor thinks the potential for exit is $50MM, but that the % of ownership including follow throughs needs to total 15% of the exit then the exit amount for the investor would equal $7.5MM. Working one more step backwards, if the investor was expecting a return (i.e. cash on cash multiple of 10x or 10 times), then his initial or total investment including follow throughs needs to total no more than 750K. Secondly, the size of the market or industry influences just how realistic the calculations of the first part above are. If the market or industry size is greater than the potential for exit, then the likelihood of the calculated valuation is possible. If however, the market or industry size is less than the potential for exit, then the valuation is unrealistic and the size of the investment should be scaled back. In the RBS example, the market/industry was described to be $320MM and the market share for the company is only 10% or $32MM, the investor % of 15% would amount to $4.8MM potential exit. They know exactly what to do, and soon you head back to bed, ready to dream once more. But what would you have done if your parents weren t as understanding? Would you still have come to them for help? And if not, how would you have dealt with the problem on your own, and what differences would there have been in the outcome? Neglect often spurs negative thoughts within a child, which may either be directed inward or outward (Olive 69). With Grendel and the Creature s frequent outbursts and destructive behavior, it is obvious they chose the latter, causing them to show signs of conduct disorder (directing feelings outward would involve violence towards others and other acts of aggression, which are key factors to diagnosing conduct disorder) (Keenan 328). The aggression is caused by their strive for satisfaction in fulfilling their superegos, because it is impossible for them to do so ( Psychologically ). The Creature, desperate for empathy, tried to convince the blind De Lacy to trust him, but his plans were foiled when the rest of the family saw him. In a last effort, the Creature seizes the old man and tells him Save and protect me! You and your family are the friends whom I seek. Do not you desert me in the hour of trial! which is then mistaken for an attempted attack. The cottagers quickly leave, abandoning the Creature, who shortly after destroys the house in which they lived (Shelley 93 95). Similarly, Grendel, attempting to return a corpse he had found in the woods, revealed himself to the humans, hoping for peace and friendship. Instead, the men attacked him with spears and battle axes. Grendel then crushed the body in his arms and fled (Gardner 51 52). These rejections thus had a lasting effect on ... While company turnover had been increased to ВЈ167m (= €250m) providing Thorntons with an 8 percent share of its core market, boxed chocolates, profit after tax had declined to the lowest level for seven years (Exhibit 1). Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The demand for Thorntons boxed chocolates follows a strongly seasonal pattern: 35 percent of sales are in the seven week period before Christmas, a further 10 percent are for Easter, including three million Easter eggs. The combination of providing a fresh product together with the need to meet a seasonal pattern of demand places particular pressures upon the company s manufacturing facilities. A proportion of the Christmas product is produced several months in advance, maintaining freshness through chilled storage. However, Thorntons chocolates are enrobed in chocolate, rather than moulded. Their hand made appearance makes the process of packing boxed chocolates less open to automation than is the case for moulded chocolates (with their more uniform shape an size) produced by companies such as Cadburys. The seasonal demand for packing staff requires the increased use of casual workers, with consequent falls in efficiency. Seasonal demand also requires the use of temporary staff in the retail outlets to meet a sales pattern that can within a few days increase tenfold; typically the company sells ВЈ10m of chocolate in the last 72 hours of Christmas trading. At times the company has sold icecream (self manufactured or bought in) as an attempt to offset the effect of low, off season, chocolate sales. In certain respects Thorntons strategy, with its ... Johnson 8 February, 2010 Morbius Fatal Folly As pointed out by Merrell Knighten in his essay called The Triple Paternity of Forbidden Planet, the main difference between Shakespeare s The Tempest and the 1956 science fiction adaptation Forbidden Planet (referred to as FP) is the use and control of power. In The Tempest, Prospero knows what power he holds through the use of his books and spells, and ultimately uses these powers to restore order to the island. There are no relations between the film and the play with regards to Morbius fellow colonizers of Altair 4, but this has to do with the fact that the film was a sci fi adaptation. The drunken butler Stephano is countered in the film with the Tennessee bourbon sloshing space cook. The character of Caliban resonates in the film by use of the Id monster, and finally Ariel is engrossed through the character of Robby the Robot. A closer reading of some of the characters in FP will reveal parallels outlined by Campos. Campos shines light on the fact that [Prospero and Morbius] are figures that, isolated from the rest of mankind, have devoted their lives to the study of some books which have granted them an extraordinary, almost supernatural power (Campos, 285). The main connections between the two are their utilization of science and magic. As pointed out by Campos, the film gives a clear implication that science becomes the magic of the future (286). This statement seems to be truthful as in Shakespeare s time magic would be thought to be no different from the scientific breakthroughs of our time. For example a Shakespearean audience would marvel at the strides science has taken in the modern day, such as the utilization of electricity. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

With World War One raging distress and fear to people worldwide, the modernists as a whole were very angry. They were angry with the propaganda of the time telling them that war was good; those who d seen the battlefield knew better. They despised their didactic Victorian predecessors, who taught clear divisions between right and wrong. Modernists instead believed that authority figures were corrupt and that morality is often unclear. • 18. Light And Darkness In Heart Of Darkness Light and dark are generally juxtaposed to highlight the maleficent and the beneficent. Alternatively, in both Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad and Native Guard by Natasha Trethewey, light and dark symbolism is used to convey that an outward appearance can conflict with what is lying underneath. Conrad shows that greed can be hidden under seemingly good intentions, and Trethewey shows that physical traits do not tell one s whole story. In the novella Heart of Darkness, Conrad uses light and dark to represent life and death. Although the Europeans believe they are bringing light and life to the Congo, in reality, they are bringing darkness and death. Sometimes one s real intentions can be eclipsed by their actions. While Marlow is in the Congo, he witnesses disturbing sights. For example, one of the first things Marlow sees in the Congo is a few natives dying slowly with looks of pain and despair while leaning against trees (Conrad 19). Even with this, Marlow is generally unaffected and focuses more on the landscape than the people dying. In order to disassociate from the bad, Marlow tends to focus on unimportant details, which plays into how the evil, underlying motives of colonization can be masked. A critique of Heart of Darkness describes this phenomenon as the enlightened faГ§ade the Company has for the general public to continue imperialism (Allingham). The way in which human beings relate to one another has been a source of inspiration to painters, sculptors, authors, composers, playwrights, filmmakers and photographers alike. Relationships between people vary from the everyday dynamics and the significance in which they value one another and each connection between those relationships makes a different impact on the one of someone else. There are many relationships people form throughout their lives, for instance the primary relationships at the start of their lives, between parent and child, and siblings, which start in the home. A relationship between a parent and child has a special unspoken bond in which they share indescribable love, never ending care and affection for each other, as the parent is the only depended and reliable thing they have. A good parent and child relationship can teach a child how to form other bonds with mutual respect and admiration, such as friendships further on in life. As people grow and develop, they form secondary connections such as friendships and intimate relationships. Friendships are predominantly built on trust, even as young children. • 28. The Concept Of Intrinsic Motivation Theory In addition to Maslow s self actualization and moreover, there is self determination theory (SDT), which suggests that people are motivated to grow and change by innate psychological needs. The theory identifies three key psychological needs that are believed to be both innate and universal: the needs for competence, connectedness and autonomy. The concept of intrinsic motivationplays an important role in self determination theory. Psychologists Edward Deci and Richard Ryan developed SDT and determined motivation to be that which people tend to be driven by; a need to grow and gain fulfillment. The first consideration of self determination theory is that people are actively directed toward growth, mastering challenges, and taking on new experiences, which are essential for developing a cohesive sense of self. Explained further by Deci and Ryan (2002), SDT begins by embracing the assumption that all individuals have natural, innate, and constructive tendencies to develop an ever more elaborated and unified sense of self. That is, we assume people have a primary propensity to forge interconnections among aspects of their own psyches as well as with other individuals and groups in their social worlds. SDT embodies a wide ranging outline for human motivation and personality. SDT articulates a meta theory for framing motivational studies, a formal theory that defines intrinsic and a variety of extrinsic motivations. Furthermore, SDT also focuses on how social and ... Conrad conveys clear ideas of how the creation of their one s direction on a journey leads to strong inner growth. Just as Conrad conveys the creation of one s own path subconsciously in Marlow, the poem Road not taken by Robert Frost explores this idea, represented my literal paths and an alternate, unspoken third path. The metaphor of the physical journey shows the moral growth in the protagonist. The poem is written in first person, giving it a very personal and reflective tone, expressing a pivotal moment in the persona s life. The use of andante, the flowing rhythm establishes a conversational tone. The rhyme scheme is simple and effective throughout the poem, however, it changes in the final stanza. By implementing a new scheme here, the final thought of reflection is emphasized. The less traveled road is symbolic of the gamble of choosing a more individual path in life, the protagonist s own road. This can be compared to the quote by Antonio Machado, Travelers, there is no path, paths are made by walking. This quote exemplifies the fact that walking the path is more important than ... Whether you saw the new movie starring Margot Robbie or heard in recent months on the news about this event that took place twenty years ago. I am talking about Tonya Harding. She was a curvy, blonde, woman who was rather poor. Over the many years of her skating career many people in The United States Figure Skating Association have tried to ostracize Tonya from the skating community because she chose music she wanted and was different. The insularity is a handicap, rather than a factor of uniqueness. Transportation from the island to the mainland has typically been somewhat of an issue, as the Northumberland strait between the landmasses freezes partially in winter, making travel difficult. These voyages became important to the colonies, since they proved that the island was not isolated from the outside world for months each year. In the first few decades of the nineteenth century, trips became a regular service with a captain and crew once per week. Although regular, these trips remained dangerous and a major inconvenience. A canoe was replaced by an iceboat with a captain and three crew. The sick and injured, as well as the women and children, would be carried across the ice in the boat, but would have to pay twice as much. The trip from Cape Traverse on PEI to the Bay of Fundy in New Brunswick took at least a day, and passengers ran the risk of catching frostbite and hypothermia. In a rare case a boat was stranded overnight during a winter storm and a man was killed by extreme hypothermia. As time went by, safety procedures were introduced. Boats were to be sent out in groups of three, and were required to carry compasses, axes, food, and fire making materials. East Africa And The Arab Slave Trade The interactions between Africa and the peoples of Asia, Europe, and the Americas have been transcribed through hundreds of accounts since the beginnings of civilization. Every conqueror within reach of this continent has attempted to seize the opportunities and resources Africa holds one way or another. What is arguably the most impactful attempt of controlling Africawas as seen through the European colonization since the arrival of the Portuguese during the age of discovery. While the European explorers were at work in Africa, another group of colonizers had their own foothold for centuries prior, the Arabs. For centuries the Arabs have had interactions and attempts of imperial expansion in Africa for the benefit of its many resources, most notably the slave trade. This was seen particularly by the Omani Arabs during the 19th century and their slave trade in the Indian Ocean. The Omanis expanded their borders into Zanzibar, only to be met with the hegemonic force known as the British Empiresoon after their expansion. Despite East Africas proximity away from the British Empire and most of their colonial interests in Africa, they seemed to have an obsession with intervening in Zanzibar.
