styles greatly influenced Indian and American styles. Late 19th and early 20th
century Burmese, Indian, and American pieces ascend directly from English furniture
designs. When an influx of English people went to India, local craftsmen imitated
English styles, but with native materials and techniques. Since the British led the
American colonies, their styles have influenced the United States, and the Gilded Age

With my arrangement, the visual organization of the space is meaningful and invites
examination of its conceptual foundation (Robinson, 32). Viewers would read the
labels and consider why these pieces were put together and what that says about the
cultures represented. They could make connections between not only the pieces, but
also the countries from which each piece stems. I would also arrange the furniture
chronologically to show progression of the styles throughout the Gilded Age, because
more designers integrated Indian styles into the European styles as time progressed.
Chronological order would also make the comparisons more accurate. Furthermore,

cultures. These pieces were used by people of English, American, Burmese, and
Indian backgrounds. Connections can be drawn between mostly higher class
individuals in each region because those are the people who would be buying and
