about men that are popular among those he meets, but once the reader looks beneath
the surface, they notice how the diction plays an important role in relaying the theme

This idea is found throughout the short story Recitatif by Toni Morrison. Recitatif
follows the story of the protagonist, Twyla, and her encounters with her childhood
orphanage roommate, Roberta. In the beginning of the story, Morrison makes it clear
that Twyla and Roberta are of different races, but never actually states which raceeach
