Editor's Notes

  1. Here I plan to invite students to come up and fill in what they think is the area. After a few students have tried, move the green banner to show the definition.
  2. This is just an information page. Here I can highlight the definition and encourage the students to copy down the definition for their own notes.
  3. Allow students to move the ruler to calculate the height of the square. Remind the students that since the we know the shape is a square, the base and the height are the equal in length.
  4. Invite pairs of students up to use the ruler to measure and then multiply to find the area.
  5. On this page, the students will be challenged to remember the formula on their own. Ask students if they can use the same “formula” for area of a square to find the area of a rectangle. Make sure they give reasons for their thinking. Have students come up and measure and write the equation.
  6. Here I intend to use this to show how base times height is equal to the area. Have one student pick the base and one student pick the height. Starting from the “start here” arrow, draw out the rectangle the students choose. For example one student chooses a base of 4 and another student chooses a height of 6. The number in the bottom right hand corner tells the area of the square, 24. Encourage the class to count the squares with you as you show that the area really is the base times the height. When the students look thoroughly confused, move to the next slide.
  7. Allow students to share their work on the document camera. Make sure they put inches, feet or centimeters!
