1. Intro. to Art

1. Designa letter(orsmall word). Choose aninterestingfont/lettershape. Draw insketchbook.
2. Decide howyouwouldlike toembellishthe letter. Make notesabouthow youwill embellish
the surface of the letter. Youcoulddecorate withdescriptivewords,imagesandsymbolsthat
are meaningfultothe yourpersonal identity.Some optionsforsurface decorationinclude:
Drawing:Coating thesurfacewithacrylic gesso to will create a smooth,whitesurfacefordrawing with
colored pencils or markers
Collage:Collect photos,magazinecutouts,colorfulpaper,tissueand more.Apply themdecoupage-style
to the surfaceof theletter. Gesso is notneeded asa primer for thistechnique.
Painting:Priming the surfacewithgesso first will makecolorsbrighter and easier to apply.Useacrylic or
premium-gradetempera colorsto createdesigns.
Metallic/Gel ArchitecturalLetter: Working on oneside of theletter at a time,use a plastic knifeor craft
stick to spread gel mediumto about1/16" thicknessacrossthe surface.Usepaintscrapers,modeling
toolsand other items to create words,texturesand designsin the gel. Gel will appearwhitewhen wet
butwill be clear when dry. Afterall sides of the letter are textured and dry,paintthemwith blackacrylic
paintand allow themto dry.Spongemetallic color overthe blackpaint.
Construction:
Two pieces of card board (top & bottomof letter)
Strips of card board or tape(forthe sidesof theletter)
Foam,paperordixie cupsfor the center stuffing
