This document provides information about the AP Calculus exam, including the date, structure, scoring, and tips. The exam will take place on May 7, 2014 from 8-11 AM in room D 206. It consists of two sections - multiple choice and free response. The multiple choice section has two parts without and with calculators. The free response section also has two parts, one without and one with calculators. Scores range from 1 to 5. The free response questions should be concise and show work. Common mistakes include algebraic errors and missing limits or endpoints. Time management and using calculator features are also emphasized.

If you take the AP Exam, you are exempt from
the final exam.

3. Structure of Test
Section I - Multiple Choice
Part A: 28 multiple-choice questions, 55 minutes, no calculators.
Part B: 17 multiple-choice questions, 50 minutes, graphing calculator
Section II – Free Response
Part A: 2 free-response questions, 30 minutes, graphing calculator
Part B: 4 free response questions, 60 minutes , no calculator.

5 = extremely well qualified
4 = well qualified
3 = qualified
2 = possibly qualified
1 = no recommendation

5. Some things about Free Response
• Don't write a long essay.

6. Some things about Free Response
Avoid simplifying numerical answers. Answers may be left
unsimplified as fractions, radicals, powers of e, in terms
of pi, etc. Do not take a chance of pushing the wrong
button once you have an acceptable answer. If you do
arithmetic, it must be done correctly.
Every year students find correct answers, change it to a
decimal incorrectly, and lose a point. Decimal
answers (for example a definite integral on your
calculator) are acceptable even if an exact answer is
possible. 3 decimal places as a minimum!

7. Some things about Free Response
If you make a mistake, cross it out. This is faster
than erasing.

8. Some things about Free Response
• Standard notation must be used. Don't use
calculator notation. For example:
• fnInt (x^2, x, 0, 2) is not acceptable, use the
standard integral notation.

9. Some things about Free Response
Answers without work do not receive full credit.
Don't do work on a calculator without indicating
what you are doing. For example, if you are
evaluating a definite integral, write the integral
on your paper and put the calculator answer
next to it.

10. Common Free Response Mistakes
• Algebra and arithmetic mistakes.
• Missing limits of integration (or the differential!).
• Not considering the endpoints of an interval (for example, when
looking for the absolute (global) maximum value of a function).
• Giving answers from outside the given interval.
• Not giving coordinates of a point when required.
• Giving both coordinates when only one is asked for; remember,
"value of a function“ means the y-value.
• Having your calculator in degrees mode.
• Not answering the question that was asked even though all the
work is correct. If it is a yes or no question, say "yes" or "no."
• Ignoring units of measure.

12. Don’t forget!
• The chain rule
• Check the endpoints with min/max problems
• Be sure to fit your answer into one of the
available choices
• If you don’t know – GUESS
• Look at the answers before solving – this can save
you valuable time.
• Manage your time.
• Know how to use all the features of your
calculator
