Overview of Cloud Computing, Infrastructure as a Service, Platform as a Service, Software as a Service.
Cloud computing means transferring ICT resources (servers, hosts, applications, databases, platforms etc.) to a cloud service provider (CSP) with the goal of reducing capital expenditures (CapEx).
Cloud computing differs from legacy hosting services in that CSPs offer standardized services on a massive scale which results in economy-of-scale effects thus further reducing operating expenses (OpEx).
Different cloud models such as public, private and hybrid clouds address different customer needs.
The 3 categories for the functional level of cloud services are IaaS (Infrastructure as a Service),
PaaS (Platform as a Service) and SaaS (Software as a Service). Countless models emerge almost daily such as MaaS (Management as a Service), BaaS (Backend as a Service) and NaaS (Network as a Service).
To accommodate increases in processing power, cloud services offer the possibility to scale-up or scale-out.

Dynamic Data Centers - Taking it to the next levelsanvmibj
Delivering on the Promise of a Virtualized Dynamic Data Center
-Maximize economic value with end-to-end virtualization
- Break down your silos (silos of virtualization are still silos)
- Explore the potential of cloud services
Typical disaster recovery plans leverage backup and/or replication to move data out of the primary data center and to a secondary site. Historically, the secondary site is another data center that the organization maintains. But now, companies are looking to the cloud to become a secondary site, leveraging it as a backup target and even a place to start their applications in the event of a failure. The problem with this approach is that it merely simulates a legacy design and presents some significant recovery challenges.

Epistemic Interaction - tuning interfaces to provide information for AI supportAlan Dix
Paper presented at SYNERGY workshop at AVI 2024, Genoa, Italy. 3rd June 2024
https://alandix.com/academic/papers/synergy2024-epistemic/
As machine learning integrates deeper into human-computer interactions, the concept of epistemic interaction emerges, aiming to refine these interactions to enhance system adaptability. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.

The SFWHA product is comprised of two portions.First part is storage management and storage monitoring. It gives us the host based storage management features, concepts around volume management, replication, snapshotting and also the feature of multipathing, and we'll get into a little bit more of that later on. As it is a host based solution, it is able to manage storage exposed from a wide variety of storage vendors – like Netapp, HP, IBM, Hitachi, EMC.The second part of the solution of the SFW product is clustering and high availability. Many people reference to it as Veritas Cluster Server. It really is the application monitoring, local failover and availability and wide area failover of the application. It provides High Availability to a wide range of enterprise applications – Microsoft SQL Server, Microsoft Exchange Server, Microsoft SharePoint Server, Enterprise Vault , Blackberry Server. The combination of these two parts make up the whole of the SFWHA product.
Talking Points: If you're in the infrastructure as a service layer (IaaS), you're thinking about your datacenter as a set of pooled virtual resources (including compute, network and storage), not in terms of individual hosts or VMs. That said, you still have to manage the virtual infrastructure, operating system and the full application stack. When you're in the platform as a service layer (PaaS), you're talking about building applications which will then be delivered as a service – the platform providing all the required building blocks for your app. You don’t have to worry about the underlying infrastructure, operating systems or the application platform infrastructure. You can focus all your energies on your applications. With Windows Azure with primarily offer PaaS but are moving towards robust IaaS capabilities (more to come in this presentation with the Roadmap)A couple of data points from internal Microsoft research: 41% of our customers are using services across on premise and public clouds80% of our customers over next 3 to 5 years will use hybrid models
Timing: 2 minutes SEE SLIDE 9 (MAKING MORE OF YOUR EXISTING INVESTMENTS) FOR ADDITIONAL DETAIL, AS NECESSARY Key Points:Microsoft’s approach to the cloud is comprehensive, spanning from public to private clouds. We believe that the future of IT is the hybrid cloud, and we are unique in providing common identity, virtualization, management, and development technologies that span private and public clouds, so that our customers’ investments today will carry them into the future, no matter what form of hybrid cloud they choose to deploy. Script:We’re anchoring the private cloud environment with a cloud-optimized operating system and management solution, Windows Server and System Center, which manages everything from infrastructure to applications to clouds (private and public) making it possible for you to manage the world of hybrid IT.By the same concept, Microsoft’s public cloud offerings are anchored by Windows Azure, which is a comprehensive IT platform across compute, storage, and network capabilities and higher level services like relational databases. Our services across both public and private fall into a few categories: Productivity—with Lync Server, Exchange Server, and SharePoint Server for the private cloud and Office 365 in the public cloud.Database—with SQL Server for the private cloud and SQL Azure in the public cloud. Business applications—with Microsoft Dynamics for the private cloud and Microsoft Dynamics CRM Online available through our public cloud.Infrastructure—with System Center providing comprehensive management across both, Windows Intune providing desktop management and security through our public cloud, Windows Server providing the platform private, and Windows Azure providing the platform for public. I mentioned hybrid IT before. We believe all companies are going to have multiple cloud environments: private, public cloud, service providers…welcome to the world of hybrid IT, a place businesses are going to call home for a long time to come. In this hybrid world, you absolutely need a distributed computing fabric that brings things together on behalf of your IT professionals and your developers writing applications. These commonalities of identity, virtualization, management, and application development are what make the Microsoft platform unique.Common identity—The majority of our enterprise customers use Active Directory to manage their identity infrastructure. Through federation, you can also extend Active Directory to offer consistent/secure single sign-on experiences for applications spanning across private and public clouds. Customer example: Who: Coca Cola Enterprises, the world’s largest marketer, producer, and distributor of non-alcoholic beverages. What: Needed a more effective way to collaborate with their employees, to increase their productivity, to enable better flow of information, and to create more time for sales persons to engage with customers. How: Set up a Microsoft Online Services solution (like Office 365) to take advantage of online meetings tools and collaboration platforms that span time zones and geographies.Benefits: (1) Single sign-on for their employees and business partners using a combination of on-premises and public cloud-based components, for integrated and enhanced security. (2) Gained the ability to deliver a standard, unified, and secure communications platform for its users. Common virtualization—Through capabilities such as the Windows Azure Virtual Machine (VM) role, we help you deliver application portability across private and public clouds.Common management—Through System Center 2012, which we’ll cover later, we offer full visibility and control for IT professionals across private and public cloud environments. At the same time, we continue to empower your application owners with self-service to make sure they can deliver agile app experiences to their businesses. Common development—The developer experience from Microsoft on the Windows platform is unparalleled. The .NET Framework allows developers to use the same set of skills to rapidly build great applications for the client, phone, browser, server, and cloud. They can manage the entire application life cycle with Visual Studio. And they can use the most popular languages for development, so you don’t have to retrain your developer staff on a new paradigm. With this approach, you don’t need to make a single giant leap to the cloud, but rather you can move at the pace that makes the most sense for your business. For example, you may be comfortable moving your email to the cloud for your sales staff, but that same choice may not work for your executives who are handling more sensitive information and require greater data privacy. With Microsoft, you can do both. Additional Information: Coca Cola: http://www.microsoft.com/casestudies/Case_Study_Detail.aspx?casestudyid=4000004584
