Build your private cloud with paa s using linuxz cover story enterprise tech ...Elena Nanos
This article has been published as a cover story of Enterprise Tech Journal Jun 2013 issue, at - http://enterprisesystemsmedia.com/article/build-your-private-cloud-with-paas-using-linux-on-system-z.
Do you know that according to Gartner poll, Private Cloud project deployments are increasing significantly in 2013 and nearly 90% of customers are looking at Private Cloud implementation and are either in the planning or early deployment stages? Is your shop currently looking into Private Platform as a Service (PaaS) Cloud implementation? Have you looked into what zEnterprise has to offer in this space?
This article gives insight on Private Cloud Implementation on zEnterprise and can help you learn how your organization can benefit from implementing a Dev/Test private cloud using PaaS with Linux on System z and why WebSphere Application Server (WAS) may be a perfect fit for a Dev/Test Private Cloud.
Learn how your organization can cut IT costs by deploying “self-service” for developers, using Dev/Test Private Cloud.
This article goes over what Applications are a good fit for Dev/Test Private Cloud and the benefits of this implementation, such as :
• Reduce the number of Dev/Test WAS environments using dedicated resources
• Reduce hardware and software license costs
• Improve speed of upgrades
• Standardize procedures and software levels
• Let developers set up and use new environments in minutes instead of days or weeks
• Simplify WAS infrastructure management
Article also goes over the key differences in managing cloud infrastructure on distributed platforms vs. mainframes and shows how Linux on System z plays a critical role in creating PaaS clouds.
• Mainframes can scale vertically, while distributed servers can scale horizontally.
• Linux on System z has much higher densities of virtual machines per processor core compared to distributed servers.
• Cloud implementation on zEnterprise can dynamically allocate workloads to available pooled resources.
• Linux on System z leverages z/VM’s ability to virtualize CPUs and memory, as well as share those resources among many Linux guests. One IFL can run the equivalent of many distributed servers.
• Consolidation of Linux workloads on a single physical hardware server allows multiple Linux images to run on z/VM IFLs without affecting IBM software charges for existing System z general processors.
Creating private cloud to host dev/test environments can save your company money and increase efficiency. Start small, but think big; create a cloud strategy and roadmap that involves getting leadership buy in, building business cases and presenting them in stages within your organization, standardizing procedures and using a fit-for-purpose approach to select pilot applications.

Addressing VMware Data Backup and Availability Challenges with IBM Spectrum P...Paula Koziol
Whether in the enterprise or small-to-medium sized firms, VMware IT administrators and storage management teams face an increasingly complex set of decisions when it comes to deploying, managing, protecting and supporting storage infrastructure. Hear about the emerging issues in the most rapidly changing part of the IT environment, virtual machine (VM) management and availability. Learn about IBM’s perspective on data availability and how it is addressing future challenges you may not even be thinking about today with the new, highly flexible IBM Spectrum Protect Plus VM backup and availability management solution.
Historically backups have been defined and referenced by the hostname of the physical system being protected. This has worked well when the relationship between the physical host and the operating system was a direct, one to one relationship. Backup processing impact was limited to each physical client and the biggest concern was saturating the network with backup traffic. This was easily managed by limiting the number of simultaneous client backups via a simple setting within the NetBackup policy.
Virtual machine technologies have changed this physical hardware dynamic. Dozens of operating systems (virtual machines) can now reside on a single physical (ESX) host connected to a single storage LUN with network access through a single NIC. When using traditional policy configurations, backup processing randomly occurs with no regard to the physical location of each virtual machine. As backups progress, a subset of ESX servers can be heavily impacted with active backups while other ESX systems sit idly waiting for their virtual machines to be protected. The effect of this is that backups tend to be slower than they need to be and backup processing impact on the ESX servers tends to be random and lopsided. Standard backup policy definitions simply do not translate well into virtual environments.
The NetBackup Virtual machine Intelligent Policy (VIP) feature is designed to solve this problem and more. With Virtual machine Intelligent Policy, backup processing can be automatically load balanced across the entire virtual machine environment. No ESX server is unfairly taxed with excessive backup processing and backups can be significantly faster. Once configured, this load balancing automatically detects changes in the virtual machine environment and automatically compensates backup processing based on these changes. Virtual machine Intelligent Policy places virtual machine backups on autopilot.

grown in very large scale. To manage business requirements
High performance computing with very large scale resources is
required. Businesses do not want to invest & concentrate on
managing these computing issues rather than their core business.
Thus, they move to service providers. Service providers such as
data centers serve their clients by sharing resources for
computing, storage etc. and maintaining all those.

Epistemic Interaction - tuning interfaces to provide information for AI supportAlan Dix
Paper presented at SYNERGY workshop at AVI 2024, Genoa, Italy. 3rd June 2024
https://alandix.com/academic/papers/synergy2024-epistemic/
As machine learning integrates deeper into human-computer interactions, the concept of epistemic interaction emerges, aiming to refine these interactions to enhance system adaptability. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.

DATASHEET▶ Enterprise Cloud Backup & Recovery with Symantec NetBackup
1. Enterprise Cloud Backup and Recovery with
Symantec NetBackup™
Data Sheet: Backup and Disaster Recovery
Overview of Symantec NetBackup™
As the established market leader, Symantec NetBackup™ delivers reliable backup and recovery across applications,
platforms, physical and virtual environments.
1
A single console unites the management and reporting of both on-premises
and on-cloud information to provide additional operating efficiencies and simplified administration. The NetBackup
platform has deep VMware® and Microsoft Hyper-V® integration, built-in deduplication to protect the private cloud,
seamless integration with industry-leading public cloud storage providers, self-service and multi-tenancy for backup as a
service (BaaS).
The NetBackup cloud storage module enables you to backup and restore data from cloud storage providers and is
integrated with Symantec's Open Storage (OST) module which provides features that can enhance the operational
experience of backup and recovery from the cloud.
Introduction to features
NetBackup Cloud Storage enablement is integrated with the Symantec OpenStorage Technology module and provides
features that can enhance the operational experience of backup and recovery from the cloud. These NetBackup features
include:
NetBackup Cloud Storage Configuration WizardNetBackup Cloud Storage Configuration Wizard—Incorporated to facilitate the cloud storage setup and storage
provisioning. This now happens entirely through the NetBackup interface. If there is no Key Management Service (KMS)
already configured, the Cloud Storage Server Configuration Wizard includes steps to create and enable KMS.
NetBackup Cloud Storage EncrNetBackup Cloud Storage Encrypyptiontion—Encrypts the data inline before it is sent to the cloud, interfaces with the KMS to
leverage its ability to manage encryption keys, and uses an AES 256 cipher feedback (CFB) mode encryption.
NetBackup Cloud Storage ThroNetBackup Cloud Storage Throttlingttling—Controls the data transfer rates between the network and the cloud. The throttling
values are set on a per NetBackup media server basis. In certain implementations, users may want to limit WAN usage for
backups and restores to the cloud so they do not constrain other network activity. Throttling provides a mechanism for
NetBackup Administrators to limit NetBackup Cloud Storage traffic. By implementing a limit to cloud WAN traffic, it cannot
consume more than the allocated bandwidth. NetBackup Cloud Storage Throttling lets users configure and control the
following:
• Different bandwidth value for both read and writes operations.
• Maximum number of connections that are supported for the cloud provider at any given time.
NetBackup Cloud Storage MeteringNetBackup Cloud Storage Metering—Enables users to monitor data transfers within the tool through reports. Cloud-
based storage is unlike traditional tape or disk media, which use persistent backup images and calculates cloud-based
storage costs per byte stored and per byte transferred. The NetBackup Cloud Storage software uses several techniques to
minimize stored and transferred data, and as a result, traditional catalog-based information about the amount of protected
data no longer equates to the amount of data that is stored or transferred. Metering allows installations to monitor the
amount of data that is transferred on a per media server basis across one or more cloud-based storage providers. Metering
reports are generated through NetBackup OpsCenter.
1. Market Share: Storage Management Software, Worldwide, 2011, Gartner (May 2012) , Based on WW Revenue.

2. NetBackup Cloud Storage SerNetBackup Cloud Storage Service Containervice Container—Performs the following functions:
• Controls the configuration parameters that are related to NetBackup Cloud Storage.
• Generates the metering information for the metering plug-in.
• Controls the network bandwidth usage with the help of throttling plug-in.
• On Windows®, it is a standard service installed by NetBackup. On UNIX®, it runs as a standard daemon.
Nothing to install
NetBackup currently supports three of the industry-leading cloud storage providers: Amazon™, AT&T® , and Rackspace®.

Business value
As many businesses increasingly leverage the cloud for applications and services, they want to protect and manage those
environments with a backup and recovery solution they can trust. By taking the same proven solutions that organizations
have come to rely on and extending them to their private cloud or storage providers integrated with NetBackup,
organizations can enjoy the peace of mind knowing their information is protected by the NetBackup platform.
Safeguarding an organization's invaluable data with NetBackup key business benefits including operational expense
reduction. NetBackup can write data to the cloud, enabling end-users with the flexibility to add cloud for operational
expense reduction purposes or to serve as part of a global disaster recovery strategy. One of the most common use-cases
for cloud storage backup in enterprises is to replace or augment tape-based off-site storage for disaster recovery readiness.
The NetBackup platform can provide you with that capability today.
Integration with cloud storage providers
NetBackup integrates with cloud storage providers via the NetBackup Connector, allowing IT departments to manage cloud
storage for backup and recovery as easily as on-premise storage, but with lower costs and improved flexibility.
Organizations can leverage the cloud as a new storage tier or as a secondary off-site location for disaster recovery.
Enterprise customers may be hesitant to move to the cloud because they feel they cannot get the comprehensive level of
data security that they get in their physical environments. Also, latency, long backup windows, bandwidth costs, and unmet
RTO objectives, are barriers to cloud adoption for large enterprises. Other requirements focus around a single point of
control and a uniform method for managing the protection of a diverse range of applications. A NetBackup platform-based
approach enables protection to be applied across a diverse range of applications running either on-premise or in the cloud.
NetBackup will ensure that cloud storage environments are protected and applications running in the cloud can be
recovered in the case of a disaster or corruption. When the NetBackup platform is extended to protect a cloud storage
environment, customers can feel confident moving their applications to the cloud as they can rely on their existing
NetBackup infrastructure to protect their cloud storage environment.
Amazon Simple Storage Service™ and Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud™
Amazon Simple Storage Service™ (S3) is storage for the Internet. It is designed to make Web-scale computing easier for
customers and provides a Web services interface that can be used to store and retrieve any amount of data from the Web. It
gives customers access to the same infrastructure that Amazon uses to run its own global network of websites. The service
aims to achieve economies of scale and to pass those benefits on to customers.

3. Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud™ (EC2) is a Web service that provides resizable compute capacity in the cloud. EC2's Web
service interface allows users to obtain and configure capacity with minimal friction and is also designed to make Web-
scale computing easier for customers. It provides users with control of computing resources and runs on Amazon's
computing environment. Amazon EC2 allows users to pay only for capacity that is used. Amazon EC2 provides customers
with the tools to build failure resilient applications and isolate themselves from common failure scenarios.
Cloud as Backup Storage
Amazon S3 (Simple Storage Service)
NetBackup has a cloud connector to allow for backups to be copied to Amazon S3, both in the US as well as regional
buckets. Encryption (AES-256) is provided as standard functionality.
While the connector is generally utilized for on premises servers sending their backup data to the cloud, some customers
are deploying NetBackup servers in the cloud and storing data, using the S3 connector, to S3 storage.
Glacier
Amazon Glacier offers a substantial cost savings over S3 at the expense of restore times and additional access costs. Due to
these issues, NetBackup currently does not offer a native support for sending data directly to Glacier (i.e. via cloud
connector).
Customers wishing to utilize the lower cost of Glacier have a few options outside of NetBackup, including utilization of the
Amazon Cloud Gateway (see more information below). Third party cloud gateways are also an option, however none are
integrated with NetBackup at this time. NetBackup can only restore data from a local source, therefore the data must
be returned locally prior to being restored. NetBackup will have no visibility into the data that is sent to Amazon S3 or
Glacier from third party devices such as Riverbed and Panzura.
AWS Storage Gateway
In addition to providing cloud infrastructure, compute and storage, Amazon has also provided tools to enable customers
the ability to transfer data to the Amazon cloud.
The AWS Storage Gateway is a service connecting an on-premises software appliance with cloud-based storage to provide
seamless and secure integration between on-premises IT environment and the AWS storage infrastructure. There are
three configurations for the AWS Storage Gateway:
1. Gateway-Cached Volumes: You can store your primary data in Amazon S3, and retain your frequently accessed data
locally.
2. Gateway-Stored Volumes: In the event you need low-latency access to your entire data set, you can configure your on-
premises gateway to store your primary data locally, and asynchronously back up point-in-time snapshots of this data
to Amazon S3.
3. Gateway-Virtual Tape Library (Gateway-VTL): With Gateway-VTL you can have a limitless collection of virtual
tapes. Please check NetBackup Hardware CompatibilitPlease check NetBackup Hardware Compatibility Lisy List (HCL)t (HCL) ffor supportor support..

4. In Amazon, NetBackup should be run in a virtual private cloud (VPC). This is now the preferred implementation from the
perspective of Amazon. A VPC provides you with a static IP address for NetBackup.
Amazon EBS can be used as Basic or Advanced disk. Since EBS is also only available in region, there is no DR without the
snapshot of EBS to S3.
AT&T Synaptic Storage as a ServiceSM
Symantec's Open Storage Technology (OST) has been tightly integrated to the AT&T's Synaptic Storage as a Service offering
and provides a single point of management and control for cloud-based backups. With this technology NetBackup can take
advantage of storage lifecycle policies and synthetic backups to the Cloud.
AT&T has selected a storage solution for their back-end storage offering that is based on an object-orientated design. It is a
multitenant architecture that AT&T uses to provide customers, both internal and external, with on-demand storage. AT&T is
unique in that the customer pays on usage with no minimum or maximum requirement. This makes the AT&T Synaptic
Storage as a Service a flexible and cost-effective offering for those seeking to leverage the cloud.
As stated above the AT&T Synaptic Storage as a Service offering is based on an object storage module, and while not new,
an Object-based Storage Device (OSD) can be described as a computer storage device, similar to disk storage, but works at
a higher level. Instead of providing a block oriented interface that reads and writes fixed size blocks of data, an Object
Storage Device organizes data into flexible size data containers, called objects. By way of definition, object storage is the
process of storing and accessing data based on object names and metadata that describe the concept or objects.

NetBackup™ 5220 Appliance.
NetBackup 5220 has a Wide Area Network (WAN) Optimization driver built in to provide two times faster throughput over
and above the performance gain from NetBackup Accelerator.
And by incorporating the use of targeted Auto Image Replication (AIR), an organization can reduce potential downtime for
it's DR or Business Continuance planning.

Up to 100 times faster cloud backups
The primary challenge in using cloud storage backup is the need for a large pipe to accommodate backup traffic. With
NetBackup Accelerator, users can perform full backups from the site to the cloud storage provider up to 100 times faster
only using the bandwidth that's normally required for an incremental backup.
