This is my second annotation of an existing contents page, as part of my AS Media Coursework.

1. Background and main image – the backgroundof thiscontents
page is veryconventionalandcreative,itdoesn’tuse astandard
colour-filledbackground,butinsteadof thatthe magazine
“Empire”has usedan unorthodox background,whichisthe
mise-en-scene of afilm(everythingonthe camera,including
sets,propsand clothingetc.) asthe background.Thisisto
establishthatEmpire isa filmmagazine andthustheyhave gone
witha creative outlooktotheirbackgroundandplacedanactual
filmframe intheircontentspage, whichwill intriguethe reader
vastlyandwill alsogive themabrief lookintowhatthe context
and tone of the magazine actuallyis.
Style – the coloursthat are usedin
thisare mainlycoloursthatare
bright,suchas red and white soit
can be seenthroughthisgrimand
dark background,andthusthat
will make itstandout inthe
darknessaswell asmakingit
easierforconsumerstoread.The
brightcoloursalsoact as a match
to the “CONTENTS” title andcould
have the effectof a filmmarquee.
Layout – the magazine’s
mastheadonthe top is small,
as it wasalreadyestablished
on the frontcover,it isused
againto showcontinuality
betweenthe contentspage
and the masthead,clearly
establishedwiththe line(and
couldbe the headerof every
page. Thisis alsousedinterms
for brandidentitysothat
audienceswillbe able to
recognize thatthisisfrom
Empire.
Layout – the layoutof the contents
are distinguishedfromthe first
contentspage.Here theyare at the
bottomof the page,butit hasn’t
beencompacted,ithastakena lot
of space inthe bottom of the page
and featuresthe more important
(headlining)articles.
Fonts – the fontsremain
differentthroughoutthe
contentspage;looking
at the numbers,theyare
sans serif infont,andits
use withthe background
givesthe fonta near
ancientandgothiclook
and that’swhat makesit
standout inthe ancient
background.
Fonts – the fontforthe
empire fontlookslike a
retro frontthat was
usedin1960/70s films,
whichcouldportraythe
age of Empire as having
originatedfromthere.
Text – the mediatext
usedinthiscontents
page is film,asbrought
out bythe background
and the “marquee title”
and the mainimage,
whichemphasizesona
male leadfroma film.
Date – usedto
informaudiences
that thismagazine
issue isnot
outdated.
Style – the title “Contents”isinbrightcolours
(redand white) thatoverlapeachother.This
makesitstand outto the readerdue to its
massive size anditscolourful front.The bright
coloursare againusedto standout inthe dark
background.Inrelation toEmpire and the
theme of film,the “contents”title couldhave
the effectof a retro filmmarquee thatisin
displayincinemasinLosAngeles(the capital
of filmmaking),filmmarqueesglowandare
brightwithbrightcoloursand are litup inthe
night, the “contents”title isbrightandit islit
up inthe dark background,whichmakesit
seemlike anearmarquee,anditsticksto the
theme of filmbecause the magazine isEmpire.
